The craze for vanity numbers saw a new record being created today as an Amritsar-based businessman, Jagjit Singh Chahal, bid a whopping Rs 17 lakh for his Toyota Land Cruiser during the auction of the number '0001' in the new CH01AN series, conducted by the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) here.

Councillors take U-turn
Chandigarh, June 15
BJP councillors succumbed to the allurement of free parking passes and took a U-turn today to table a fresh policy for issuance of free parking passes in the next House meeting for approval of the authorities. The BJP councillors who were vocal on the recovery of financial loss of Rs 2.84 crore just two weeks ago agreed to take up this issue in the next meeting.
Rise in crime keeps policemen on toes
Chandigarh, June 15
Rising thefts, burglaries and vehicle lifting has forced top policemen of Chandigarh to come on road for night patrolling. The sudden spurt of theft incidents, especially vehicle lifting, has moved officials, including Inspector General (IG), SPs and seven DSPs, along with 22 inspectors, out of their houses during night. Interestingly, the city so far has witnessed more than 45 theft incidents this month.
Elders’ abuse survey report released
