Majithia’s rally leads to snarl-up
Jalandhar, June 5 The tents for the rally had been erected on government land along the road in front of the shop owned by the party candidate from Ward 13 Rohit Kumar Vicky. The rally was addressed by SAD leader and Punjab minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia. The rally started around 5.15 pm and concluded at 6 pm during which all bus passengers, ambulances and other vehicles remained caught up in the snarl-up. Fed up of the congestion, many commuters chose to step down the buses, walk around half-a-kilometre to take a rickshaw or a mini-bus. The traffic remained bumper-to-bumper owing to which it was even difficult for the pedestrians to cross the stretch. All leaders who attended the event, including Majithia, BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia, former Akali minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan and former MLA Sarabjit Makkar, had their vehicles and their pilot gypsies parked in the middle of the road till the show was over. While SAD candidate Vicky said that permission for the rally had been sought from Returning Officer-cum-District Development and Panchayat Officer Sarabjit Singh Walia, the RO said he could never give permission to hold a rally on a road. "I am not sure whether they had taken permission or not. In any case, we have strictly told all candidates that rallies are not to be held on road or road sides. How can we allow the candidate to block traffic and cause public inconvenience? It has to be on private land or some specifically designated MC land that, too, on rental basis," he commented. District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti said he would seek a report on the matter. "If any candidate is found having indulged in a violation, a show-notice will be issued to him and the report will be sent to the state election commission," he said. |

Police personnel in civvies and uniform will be deployed at various strategic points to avoid any untoward incidents. The Police Control Room (PCR) personnel have been asked to pull up their socks while the riot control vehicles and mounted police have been kept ready for June 10. The police has also set up nakas at various entry and exit points to the city, besides the internal link roads to tighten noose around troublemakers. |
City swimming pools safe, but parents need to be cautious
Jalandhar, June 5 Most of the times, drowning incidents are termed as ‘chance accidents’, but parents need to keep a check on the facilities and round-the-clock presence of coaches and lifeguards at the time of swimming to avoid such tragedies. Jalandhar Tribune takes a look at the life-saving facilities at some of the swimming pools of the city. PAP swimming pool Parents are not allowed to go inside the pool with children at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) swimming pool. However, the authorities claim the pool is equipped with the best of life-saving facilities. The pool has three coaches from the PAP and one from Police DAV Public School on the PAP campus. Coach Sunil Kumar from the PAP said: “We have dedicated time schedule for swimming in the pool for different categories. As far as children are concerned, a majority of them are participating in the ongoing summer camp. Coaches and helpers remain present to assist the children.” The PAP authorities claim that not even a single incident of drowning has taken place in the pool since its inception in 1957. “Another plus point is that we don’t allow late night swimming for children. Children are not allowed in the other side of the pool where the depth is 6 feet,” he added. He said children are taken for swimming where the water level is just 3 feet and that too in the presence of coaches. Besides, there are ropes along the boundary of the pool to assist children in swimming, he said. Kalpana Bhaskar, whose 12-year old son goes for swimming to the PAP swimming pool, said it was after checking the facilities and the staff at the pool that she allowed her son to learn swimming. "The pool is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Parents should always stay in touch with the coaches and the helpers to get a feedback of their child's response to the sport,” she added. Deepika Sharma, whose 10-year-old daughter is pursuing swimming, said: "The tragedy that took place in Mumbai was unfortunate, but I feel that when it comes to sports like swimming, parents need to be extra cautious. If the child finds it difficult to pick up swimming, parents should immediately stop the child,” she added.
Vajra swimming pool Another swimming pool that witnesses huge rush throughout the year is
the Vajra swimming pool situated in the Vajra Officers’ Institute. The pool is equipped with special swimming facilities for beginners, especially children. There is a special pool for children below 5 years of age away from the main swimming pool. Though there are no coaches here, the pool has 12 lifeguards who remain present during swimming timings. “As far as swimming for children is concerned, it is a completely safe as the water level is low and children can easily hop in and hop off easily. The idea is to provide children a comfortable learning experience of swimming,” said an attendant. Govt Arts and Sports College swimming pool The Punjab Sports department’s state-of-the-art swimming pool on the Government Arts and Sports College campus was set up in 1986. The college has a track record of producing some of best national and international swimmers. Swimming coach Om Parkash said: “There are two coaches to give professional training to swimmers to compete in the state, national and international swimming competitions. We allow beginners only one-hour a day and two lifeguards remain present to assist them. Moreover, we get students from across the state who are trained professionally. The upkeep of the swimming pool is a major concern, hence it is equipped with a suction pump and a filter and is cleaned daily,” he added.

Garbage dumps, faulty sewerage main concerns
Jalandhar, June 5 The area is full of garbage dumps. The situation is pathetic in New Sabji Mandi in the absence of garbage disposal system. Waste remains lying inside and outside the mandi. Stray animals can also be seen feeding on the waste on the road. However, the councillor says the disposal of garbage from subji mandi is not under his jurisdiction. He said it was the responsibility of the market committee to keep the mandi clean. The sewerage system in the Sudarshan Park area has gone non-functional due to some technical fault. Roads are also broken in the localities of Nagra village, Golden Avenue National Park, New Sudarshan Nagar and, Greater Kailash. Interestingly, the councillor also lives in Nagra village. A ward without park
Jalandhar, June 5 Leaving aside the broken roads, poor water supply, sorry state of sewerage system, the residents criticise their councillor for not developing even a single park in the ward for having natural and fresh air. The other issues, which haunts the residents of New Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar and New Amar Nagar, are that these newly developed colonies in the ward are being deprived of civic amenities, be it roads, water supply, sewerage and garbage disposal system. Due to unpaved roads in some of the colonies, residents allege that during rains, the problem of water blocking escalates and the threat of spread of water-borne diseases looms large.
