Grant cut
MC to get Rs 10 crore less under JNNURM for not imposing house tax

Chandigarh, June 19
The municipal corporation (MC) will have to bear a cut of Rs 10 crore in the JNNURM grant. In a communication from the Centre, sent through UT Administration to the MC today, it was stated that the MC would not get the full grant.

The cash-rich municipal corporation (MC) will turn bankrupt soon if the MC authorities and councillors do not rein in themselves while approving development works worth crores, if one goes by development agendas approved in the General House of the MC.

Over 40-kg ice-cream destroyed in raid

The feedback mechanism of the UT police had a fruitful result when the police control room (PCR) got information of an ice-cream factory being run under unhygienic conditions from the terrace of a house at Vikas Nagar in Mauli Jagran last night.

The police today impounded the black Chevrolet Cruze that was involved in the hit-and-run incident on June 16, when an ambulance ferrying a 10-year-old child to the PGI overturned on being hit by the car.

Councillors to go on study tour when info just a click away
Chandigarh, June 19
For seeking information of sewerage treatment plant (STP) technology which is just a click away, the municipal corporation is going to spend lakhs of rupees to organise a study tour of the councillors and officials. In the general House meeting today a proposal was approved by the councillors that a study tour would be organised for monitoring the technology used for the installation of sewerage plant in the city. It has been decided that the councillors will visit those places where STPs had been installed with different technology and after the visit a decision will be taken to finalise the installation of STP at Maloya.

Illegal occupants issued final notice

Acting tough, Tanvi Garg, Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM), East, has issued final 15-day notices to illegal occupants of 60 EWS houses in Sector 29 and another 26 to EWS illegal occupants in Sector 26 that were meant for migrants from Jammu and Kashmir.

Panel to recommend cancellation of booths

In the infamous booth scam, the UT Estate office has completed its inquiry. Sources revealed that the committee was going to recommend cancellation of more than dozen booths. Besides, the committee is also going to recommend registration of police cases against the allottees, who have violated terms and conditions in the allotment of booths in Sector 41 Krishna Booth Market.

Councillors argue during the General House at the MC office in Sector 17 on Tuesday. Tall claims of the municipal corporation for the monsoon were exposed today at the General House meeting when a majority of councillors complained that the special cleanliness drive of road gullies in the city was a mere eyewash as nothing concrete had been done in this regard.

Will contest elections against ex-husband, says Fiza
Mohali, June 19
Fiza today announced to contest elections against her ex-husband Chander Mohan, former deputy chief minister of Haryana. "I am all set to enter the politics. I have decided to contest against him (Chander Mohan)," said Fiza while claiming that the BSP had asked her to join the party.

Buses on metro route flagged off
Chandigarh, June 19
The CTU buses that started plying on the Metro route from Tuesday. On high-passenger volume routes, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) today started a dedicated ‘Metro Route Bus Service’. Two routes, connecting the PGI with Panchkula have been initially marked for running of the service that will run at a frequency of every five minutes, against the routine service provided at an interval of every 20 minutes.

UT told to speed up implementation of power reforms
Chandigarh, June 19
P Uma Shankar, Union Power Secretary, today asked the UT Administration to speed up the implementation of power sector reforms especially to prepare the online data of consumers, power connections and entire power infrastructure of the city. Shankar said that these steps were important to minimise the transmission and distribution losses and to improve the electricity distribution system.

1.23 lakh children administered polio drops
Mohali, June 19
The local administration has claimed to have achieved its target by administering pulse polio drops to about 1.23 lakh children (below five years) during the three-day drive that concluded today.

The local court today issued notices to a Gurgaon-based realtor and a priest of the Shiv Temple in Pinjore in the alleged illegal sale of the prime land of the shrine.

Police stations to have live scanners

Live scanners and fingerprint input devices will be installed at all police stations in the district to facilitate quick verification of identity. Director General of Police Rajiv Dalal stated this after inaugurating the double-storeyed building of OR's Mess in Police Lines at Moginand village, near here, today.

Admn raids ‘dhabas’, shops to check child labour
Ropar, June 19
Officials of the Administration with two boys who were found working at a ‘dhaba’ in Ropar. In a bid to check child labour at commercial places, particularly at hotels and dhabas, the local administration today conducted raids at as many as 40 places.
Ropar Deputy Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Aggarwal said the team, headed by SDM Ravinder Kumar, found children (below 14) working at two places, Giani Sweets and Pappu da dhaba.

Diarrhoea rears its ugly head
Ambala, June 19
Patients recuperate at a dispensary in Ambala. In a sudden spurt of diarrhoea cases, around 200 residents of Kalalti village were rushed to a rural dispensary around 15 km away from here today.
About 40 patients were admitted to the dispensary. Three patients, Gurdevi, Kamlesh and Manjeet were referred to the Civil Hospital in Ambala City.

Undentified body found on rail track
Chandigarh, June 19 
A body of an unidentified person was found on the railway track near Sector 47 here this morning. According to information, the railway police received the information at 8.15 am that a body of a youth, aged about 30 years, was lying on the railway track. 

16-yr-old boy held for rape
Mohali, June 19
The police today arrested a 16-year-old boy for raping a 14-year-old girl at Bar Majra Colony near Balongi village. The accused had an affair with the victim. The victim's father, Vijay Gupta, a labourer, alleged that he and his wife were not at home when the incident occurred.

Three held with 3.5-kg opium
Mohali, June 19
The police today arrested three persons and recovered opium from their possession. The accused have been identified as Parminder Kumar (19), a BSc student, and a resident of Kagmabad Goon, Meerut (UP), Talib (19), a resident of Khera Mugal, Saharanpur (UP), and Darshan Singh, a resident of Sector 41. The police has recovered 3.5 kg opium from them.

Punjab is the only state in the country which has its own comprehensive sports policy to promote sports among youths as a mission. The government has constructed six international-level hockey stadia and 13 multi-purpose stadia in the state at a cost of Rs 200 crore, besides the sports department is going to set up one sports school in every district and a multi-purpose stadium in every block.

Lawn tennis meet for hearing impaired
Chandigarh, June 19
The All-India Sports Council of the Deaf will organise the first National Deaf Lawn Tennis Championship at National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, from July 12 to 16. The Punjab Deaf and Dumb Sports Association will host the tourney. The championship is organised to prepare a team for the upcoming World/Asia Pacific Tennis Championships.

A corporate seven-a-side football tournament will be organised at the Football Stadium, Sector 17, from June 22 to 24. A total of 32 teams, including clubs, will vie for the cup.
