No medical aid for injured players
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 19
The department that boasts of providing world class services to its players has failed to deliver the best when it comes to supplying medical kits to coaching centres.

Notably, some stadia are surviving on "betadine" bottles while others have nothing except water.

In a recent incident, a player practising at the Sector-42 Hockey Stadium, faced this irony when he received an injury on his ankle. The player was injured during a regular practice session and was later made to sit and wait for his parents.

"Injuries are a regular feature, but if a player receives an injury, the officials (present on ground) should provide them at least with primarily aid. When I came to pick my son, I was shocked. There was no coach or any official (present on the ground) and players were playing on their own. And moreover, there was no ice-pack, bandage or any kind of balm for the primarily aid, said a parent.

"The officials are charging a usual amount from us, so they should at least administer the first aid," he said.

A player, who practises regularly at the Sector-18 Hockey Stadium, said, "We sustain injuries on a regular basis during our practice sessions. But here, we have only a bottle of "betadine". There are no ice-packs or some other balm. Primary aid is very important and moreover the initial stage is the best stage to avoid any serious injury," she said.

Another player, said, "At our stadium, we have a medical kit but if a player receives an injury, he has to borrow ice from a vendor sitting outside the stadium," said the player. The officials should make proper arrangements, he added.

The same scenario was witnessed at the Sports Complex, Sector 46.

On other hand, District Sports Officer KS Bharti said, "For the state-run academies, we have a special medical budget allocated but when it comes to coaching centres, coaches and managers are provided first-aid kits from the miscellaneous budget. And if they need any addition to it, they can ask for it from the department, anytime. Till date, no one has asked for any such thing," said KS Bharti.
