18 police teams trace down murder accused
Gurdaspur, June 15 The incident had sent shock waves among locals as the firing took place in broad daylight forcing Gurdaspur SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar to publicly proclaim that the accused would be arrested within 24 hours. This assertion of the district police chief somewhat smothered the ruffled feathers of the irate village folk of Dhariwal Kichian, falling under the jurisdiction of Puranashala Police Station. To further pacify the villagers he himself took charge of the case. A total of 18 teams were deployed to track down the assailants. The police managed to arrest two drug addicts namely Taranjit Singh and Sukhmeer Pal Singh, both in their twenties, on Thursday. Smack and a country-made pistol were recovered from the accused. Both Taranjit Singh and Sukhmeer Pal Singh belonged to the adjoining Lakhanpal village and had resorted to indiscriminate firing at the residence of Onkar Singh following which he died. Police officials termed the incident as an act of revenge as both the victim and assailants were known to each other, but later fell out due to some reason. Three others --- Surinder Singh, Bikram Singh and Bhupinder Singh --- sustained serious injuries and were shifted to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital. Later, when the condition of the three deteriorated, they were shifted to Amritsar. “My officers did not sleep throughout the night as I had promised the villagers that the police would arrest the accused within 24 hours. The confidence of the residents would have been at a low end had we not succeeded in our endeavour. As many as 18 teams were deployed to track down the killers and we met with success when we arrested both Taranjit and Sukhmeer Pal. The police are on the trail of the other accused and we intend to nab all of them within a week,” asserted the SSP. |
