Breach in Sirhind Canal, water enters deer park
Bir Talab (Bathinda), June 7 Officials of the district administration, including Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav, irrigation and PWD department officials, rushed to the site to divert the flow of water. However, water entered the safari area from near the main entrance of the zoo after around 350 metres of newly-built boundary wall collapsed. It is pertinent to mention that nearly Rs 2 crores were spent to build the 4.5 kilometre-long boundary wall of the mini zoo. Zoo officials reached the spot and extended a helping hand to the irrigation department officials. Deputy divisional forest officer M Sudhagar said that efforts were on to save animals and birds in the enclosures. Later in the evening, Divisional Forest Officer K Kannan claimed that the breach has been plugged and all the animals at the mini zoo were safe. Army jawans as well as JCB machines were summoned to plug the breach in the canal. Suresh Kumar, one of the villagers, said the area residents had detected the breach first and informed the zoo authorities. “The water flowed down towards the entrance of the zoo and broke the newly-built boundary wall in less than an hour. The breach was plugged with the help of area residents,” he said. Officials said 425 cusecs of water was running in the canal when the breach was reported. Efforts were on to plug the breach in the canal till the filing of this report.

Talks with minister fail, jobless teachers back on road
Rampura, June 7 The members of the teachers union today said they had been forced to intensify the agitation and now they would sit on hunger strike atop the watertank of Lehra Dhoorkut village. It is pertinent to mention here that a group of more than 20 teachers had climbed atop the watertank of the village on Sunday afternoon and have not come down yet. They have threatened to jump off the tank in case the government failed to give them appointment letters. Teachers’ leaders Poonam Sharma, Harjap Singh and others said they had resumed the blockade on the Barnala-Bathinda road following the failure of their talks with the education minister and his written assurance. The teachers said they would also move out in villages to garner support of the farmer community and would not relax until they all get the appointment letters from the state government. Meanwhile, commuters and residents of Lehra Dhoorkut village had a tough time passing through the road. Commuters had to take longer routes. Members of 17 kisan unions have announced to support the agitation of the teachers. The kisan unions have also arranged langar (community kitchen) for the agitating teachers who came from all over the state demanding appointment letters from the state government.

Abohar, June 7 A section of citizens had intercepted the cavalcade of local bodies’ principal secretary Suresh Kumar on May 19 on the old tehsil road requesting him to have a look at the roads that had perished in less than three months of its construction by the local council. The protesters had urged the state government to get the alleged malpractices probed, initiate action against the officials and contractors concerned. Suresh Kumar, who visited Abohar under the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to file a status report on the sewerage system, had directed the Vigilance Cell to inquire the substandard construction of roads. The local bodies’ director sent a fax message that JE Surinder Behal has been placed under suspension in this case. — OC |

Abohar, June 7 During a 55-minute meeting at the chairman’s office, former MP and ex-president of the PCC Virendra Kataria apprised Mittal of the inordinate delay on the part of the officials in running trains on the track. Kataria informed over the phone that Mittal has advised NGOs to call off their agitation at Abohar and Fazilka since the things were moving fast now. Efforts were in the pipeline to appoint sufficient staff to manage the 42-km track passing through five railway stations and about two dozen level crossings. He assured that the trains announced by respective railway ministers during the past two years’ budget speeches would be run. Kataria said the chairman has directed the officials to put the 13008 Udyan Abha Toofan Express on monitoring to ensure its arrival at Abohar at scheduled time. The train had earned a nickname of “late lateef train”. |
