Power cuts prolong despite
assurance by CM, UPCL
Dehradun, June 1 At the time of punching this report, the power cut was in place for close
to two hours. Highly placed sources in the UPCL are blaming Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (PTCUL) for these power cuts. They said the UPCL braced itself with the increase in the power demand over the years by having transformers and substations of enhanced capacity but PTCUL on the other hand continued to have transformers and a number of substations as they were 10 years ago. As a result, it is no longer in a position to take the burden of the existing power load and has to shut down the power supply to save its transformers and substations from collapsing. PTCUL has three substations, each at Majra, Bindal and Purukul of 132
KV capacity. Out of these, the first two are already overloaded and had to be shut down as the load further increased. As the population of the city has increased more than double in the last 10 years, from that yardstick at least one substation should have been added to share the power load at least five years ago. In fact, PTCUL did float such a proposal four years ago, but the matter got stuck over a wrong selection of land in Selaqui. The same exercise has once again taken off with the work at a new substation of 220 KV starting at Sabbawala, Selaqui. By the time this substation gets fully operational, the city will have many more such long cuts in every now and
then. Managing Director, UPCL, AK Johri, has already expressed surprise over
the way the power demand has crossed the record mark of 35 MU in a day in the city, which is
an increase of 15 per cent from last year and can still soar high with the escalation of heat in
the weather. It can be safely deduced that PTCUL will also continue to cease the
supply with the advent in the demand and the public will suffer power cuts. The promise made by the Chief Minister, UPCL and UJVNL will fall flat before the unpreparedness of
PTCUL. The office of Managing Director, PTCUL, AK Gupta, neither answered the calls made for an appointment, nor of queries in this regard.

Valim wants to set more Guinness records
Haridwar, June 1 He holds the Guinness record for making the world’s longest 1.5 km bed sheet. Currently in Haridwar, Valim, a tailor by profession, talking to TNS, said since childhood, he had a penchant for making unique things. Inspired by the cultural, religious and spiritual diversity of the pilgrim city, he has now made a 10,000-beads ‘rudraksh mala’ at the Subash ghat. “I am taking a lot of spiritual energy from this city as apart from the Ganga, temples and ashrams, it’s the religious harmony between Hindus and Muslims here that has touched me the most,” said Valim. Valim said doing patchwork in a 1,500 m long sheet was an arduous task but he had determination to make the whole sheet look similar. Making this bed sheet took him 11 years and one month and spent Rs 3.4 lakhs on it. It has financially affected him. He said feeding his five children was now becoming difficult for him but no government aid was being sanctioned. Valim also staged a symbolic agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, but meagre assurances were given to him. Revealing that he has numerous such creative ideas that can break records, Valim said he was in debt already and if government or any social organisation comes for his assistance, he could make into coveted record books in no time. |

Need for industry, science collaboration: Ex-Chief Secy
Dehradun , June 1 He suggested that industry and science should collaborate to work out a formula for arriving at green bonus, which should be given to hill states in lieu of the environmental services that they offer to the nation. The annual summit, 4th in the series, was held with the theme ‘Sustainable technologies for inclusive growth’. The daylong deliberations dwelled upon green technologies for manufacturing, green urban infrastructure and panel discussion on green energy. Addressing the inaugural session, Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director General, UCOST, emphasised the importance of green buildings and said the upcoming Science Bhawan in the state would be incorporating all features of green buildings, including rainwater harvesting and use of solar energy. He also laid emphasises on the importance of collaboration among science, industry and civil society. Rakesh Aggarwal, Chairman, CII, Uttarakhand State Council, said the effect of the current resource intensive development process on environment was being felt across the globe. However, its potential to impact ecologically sensitive zones like the state was much higher. Setting the context for the theme of the summit, Aggarwal urged the industry to adopt greener technologies. Chairing the session on green urban infrastructure, IK Pande, Special Advisor, State Planning Commission, Uttarakhand, emphasised the immediate need for focusing on urban planning. Quoting various reports, Pande said the urban infrastructure in the country today was woefully inadequate. “Only 6 per cent of the towns and cities in the country have sewerage systems. Therefore, huge investments are required in this sector. Given this scenario, elaborating the economic sustainability of green infrastructure becomes important,” he added. Concluding the inaugural session, Rajiv Berry, former Chairman, CII, Uttarakhand State Council, gave the vote of thanks. The summit was attended by more than 100 delegates from industry, institutions, academia, NGOs and experts in the area of environment and addressed by more than 15 experts. Dismissed constables hold procession
Dehradun, June 1 Praveen Kumar questioned that when 876 candidates out of total 1450 were found guilty for depositing double application forms, then why only 300 of them were dismissed and the rest had been allowed to continue. He said it was not a new phenomenon to file double forms as the procedure had been followed openly from 2005 onwards. It was only during these exams that the enquiry was set up at the behest of former DGP, JS Pandey, in this respect and selective candidates were expelled. Sanjiv Kumar said it was unjustified to expel them after they had already completed the training tenure of nine months and five months of joining period, during which they also gave duties during Assembly elections in the state. The candidates, however, saw a new ray of hope in the assurance given by Vijay Bahuguna. Robin Sharma said; "The former CM got us thrashed on our demand for justice. On the contrary, the present CM has assured to look into the matter.." |
