Ujjwala has tough time entering Tiwari's house
Dehradun, May 29 It was only after intervention of her lawyer that she could get the entry. Dehradun-based Forest Research Institute campus today had a large number of visitors in the form of mediapersons. These mediapersons had come to cover ND Tiwari blood sampling being carried out at Forest Research Institute residence of ND Tiwari. While two to three OB vans had stationed themselves at FRI from early morning hours, a large number of mediapersons poured into the campus. Interestingly, FRI employees too could be seen outside Tiwari's residence. Rohit Shekhar had a tough time dealing with mediapersons, who surrounded him as soon as he came out of the Tiwari's residence. Mediamen who jostled to get a space for themselves even pushed Rohit at times, forcing policemen to control the crowd. But Rohit did oblige each and every mediaperson before making an exit. Though they were only a few, some commoners, too, could be seen outside Tiwari's residence. These people, who were mostly villagers, looked upset over forced collection of blood samples of Tiwari. They said it was not proper to humiliate an aged politician. |
24x7 power supply a challenge for corporations
Dehradun, May 29 In a joint press conference convened by Managing Director, UPCL AK Johri and Director Operation, UJVNL, BCK Mishra, the officials wondered over the demand reaching a record 35.5 million unit (MU) mark on May 28. Johri said, “As against the gross energy availability of 32 MU, the demand rose up to 35 MU on Monday for which even we were not prepared. We estimated it not to go beyond 33 MU in any possibility but the demand increased by 15-20 per cent.” Johri said it was only the rural belt of the city that the power cuts were imposed for an hour on a daily basis. Mishra said the Maneri Bhalli hydro-electric project too had to be closed down on Monday during the peak hours from 12 noon to 8pm due to extra deposition of silt, due to rain in Gangotri. Owing to these reasons, the power was snapped for two hours in the city. The officials, however, expressed hope that they would be able to stand by the claim made by Bahuguna, as the snow was fast melting, because of which the power generation had drastically shot up from 15 to 19 MU from May 24 onwards. The power shortage too had decreased from 3 MU to 1 MU accordingly. The power frequency was, however, not faring well by being around the mark of 49.7 MU which led to low voltage. The power generation in May last year was 550 MU as against 490 MU this year. However, Mishra said the generation would pick up fast with the onset of monsoon. He also said five small hydro-electric projects of 26 MW were slated to be completed this year. Gagani project of 8 MW and Badiyar project of 4.9 MW in Uttarkashi would be completed this year. Besides this, Kali Ganga of 4 MW was near completion. Assi Ganga I and Assi Ganga-II, each of 4.5 MW would be commissioned as well. |
Parking problem irks tourists, residents
Mussoorie, May 29 On one hand, the business community of the town is elated with the influx of tourists in large numbers, but on the other, it is lamenting the lack of adequate facilities here. Traffic jams and parking woes remain common despite several meetings of officials. According to the Municipal Council, over 1,200 vehicles arrive in the town daily during peak seasons. Presently, the administration has provided four parking areas for the tourist vehicles. Around 500 vehicles can be parked at library bus stand, 50 in the Bakery Hill area, 100 at Landour bazaar and 200 in the Town Hall area, which means that the town has a parking space for less than 1,000 vehicles. A tourist from Dehradun, Navdeep Sarna, who was seen searching adequate parking space for his vehicle at the Mall Road, said since his arrival in the town, he had been running from one point to park his vehicle but to no avail. “The police personal, instead of providing an alternative solution, are more interested in serving tickets,” added Navdeep. Tourists arriving in large numbers is creating acute parking problems in town. The disgruntled hoteliers are of the view that the inadequate parking space in the town was affecting their business as they were losing out on much-needed revenue during the peak season. Mussoorie Hotel Association spokesperson Sandeep Sahni rued the fact that the non-cooperative nature of the administration was the greatest hindrance in the establishment of new parking lots in the town. “A private parking constructed at the Sylverton ground could solve the parking woes of the town to a certain extent, but the file is just being tossed from one department to the other due to reasons unknown,” he added. Sahni also suggested that till the time no mega structure comes in to existence, the administration should target creating small parking lots at different places so that the traffic congestion from Mall Road could be eased out. Anil Godiyal, another local resident, said if the MDDA granted permission to the hotels to construct parking lots in their own hotels, the condition would improve. |

Earlier, giving respite to the ruling Congress, the BJP allowed Question Hour to go uninterrupted repeatedly putting the Social Welfare and Transport Minister Surinder Rakesh to dock. The minister replied to a question raised by BJP MLA Rajesh Shukla whether the pension to the beneficiaries falling under different categories was being released on time by the government. Not only did the minister make disparaging remarks about widows, but also said he had no knowledge that the previous BJP government had passed an order under which deserted women were also included in the fourth category of pensioners. Disenchanted BJP members then raised slogans and even went to the well of the House to lodge their protest. This forced Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to intervene and clarify the government's position that the new Congress government was still in the process of identifying the women beneficiaries and once it was done, the pension would be disbursed. Almost at the fag end of Question Hour, opposition members again rallied behind the Leader of the Opposition Ajay Bhatt and once again urged Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal to accept their notice for initiating discussion under Rule 310 so that the entire modus operandi regarding former BJP MLA Kiran Mandal's sudden disappearance and resignation could be brought before the House. "We allowed Question Hour to pass peacefully and had hoped that the Speaker would accept our notice but he again refused to entertain our demand. We had brought documentary proof to prove our contention that the government was behind Mandal's disappearance," said Bhatt. |
