face of the week
Dehradun, May 19 Panwar completed his studies from Cambrian Hall, Dehradun, and graduated from DAV Postgraduate College. He had a successful stint of more than 12 years in the field of corporate marketing and advertising and had worked with some of the best business houses in the country, including a UK-based multinational company. But his love for hills brought him back to Garhwal. Prateek travelled extensively to each and every part of Uttarakhand and later in 2008 founded
the Action and Research for Conservation in Himalayas (ARCH), an internationally known non-profit organisation (NGO) pioneering in bird conservation. ARCH has been organising “The Great Himalayan Bird Count” every year in the winter since 2008 in which bird watchers from all corners of India and overseas, besides the local rural youth participate to generate a avian baseline population dynamics data from all river valleys of the Garhwal division in Uttarakhand in partnership with the Forest Department. Prateek through ARCH had today achieved what even the state tourism authorities had failed to do. He had succeeded in bringing bird watching enthusiasts from across the country and abroad to Uttarakhand, making them understand the importance of the rich avian fauna of the state. The Great Himalayan Bird Count today stands as the most popular bird watching event of the country and Uttarakhand is slowly but surely emerging as a new global birding destination. It is also generating a lot of academic
interest in the rich avian wealth here. As part of a commitment towards conservation, Prateek has come up with a concept of ‘House Sparrow Nest Box Adoption Programme’. Formally launched from the Governor’s House in Dehradun on May 3, 2010, the programme entailed providing a safe predator-proof nesting space to a sparrow species in distress. So far the installed nest boxes have added more than 2,000 sparrows to the environment. Besides conservation activities, Prateek makes documentary films invoking a lot of interest among travellers and scholars alike in Uttarakhand. These films can also act as reference material for academicians and historians of tomorrow. Panwar is also the state coordinator of the Bombay Natural History Society in Uttarakhand and also Director of the Bal Bhawan,

UKD holds demonstration
Nainital, May 19 The leaders of the party once again tried to whip up support on the issue besides raising several other issues at the demonstration held at the Tallital Daanth area. They also demanded that the government must go in for construction of smaller power projects to address the socio-economic concerns of the people of the state. Senior UKD (P) leader Narayan Singh Jantwal said, “If the Chief Minister is serious about making Garsain the permanent capital of the state and the decision to hold a Cabinet there is a step in this direction, it is a welcome move. But if it is a political stunt, the people of the state are definitely going to oppose it.” He said at the time of the agitation for the creation of a separate state, the UKD and its supporters had made it clear to the people that Garsain would be made the permanent capital and would be named as Chandranagar after Vir Chandra Singh Garhwali. Jantwal asserted that the people of the state do not favour the politics of ‘ad hocism’ being promoted by the Congress and the BJP on the issue. On the raging issue related to the construction of power projects in the state, the UKD leader said his party was in favour of smaller power projects that could address the socio-economic concerns of the people. He said the projects must be managed by the local people as they were the best judge of things at the ground-level. He said there was definitely a need to harness the hydro power potential of the state but it had to be done in a manner that the locals benefit from it without damaging the environment. When questioned on his party giving support earlier to the BJP and now to the Congress-led government, Jantwal said since there was a fractured mandate at both the Centre and the state level, coalition governments were a need of the
