David keeps Delhi on top
Dharamsala, May 19 With no Virender Sehwag in the lineup, he stole the show, the match and also Kings XI’s chances of making it to the play-offs. Warner (79 off 44 balls) plundered the Punjab bowling as Delhi Daredevils beat the Kings XI by six wickets. Warner started with panache and he along with Unmukt Chand were off the blocks in breathtaking fashion. After giving a couple of deliveries a good look in, Warner started a thunderstorm of runs that lasted for almost 13 overs. The ball almost went out of the stadium and the crowd couldn’t help but cheer an innings of such explosive nature — such was Warner’s prowess. He was severely harsh on Parvinder Awana, as he tore into the young bowler, accumulating 23 off that over. Chand was finally sent packing by Azhar Mahmood, but Warner was going strong. Finally, when he was caught by Mandeep at backward point off the bowling of Ryan Harris, it seemed evident that the damage had been done. It was the end of an innings that will give Delhi some much-needed fillip as they top the table and await the Qualifier in Pune now. The Kings managed a few wickets towards the end of the chase, including that of Warner’s, but there was no real twist in the tale. Some lusty blows from Venugopal Rao scripted the perfect ending for Delhi. Earlier, a late blitzkrieg saw Kings XI Punjab reach a somewhat respectable 141 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. After being rocked by early wickets and some precision bowling by Umesh Yadav, the Kings were, at one stage 20 for 4, but the lower order chipped in with priceless runs to take them forward. Mandeep poked at a delivery from Umesh Yadav and was caught comfortably by the wicketkeeper. Gilchrist looked like he was set to carry forward his form from the previous game, but he too was sucked into playing a rash shot, and the bounce on a Umesh Yadav delivery led to a catch at mid on by Varun Aaron. The surprising inclusion of Paul Valthaty made the Punjab batting look rather fragile. And Valthaty did nothing to prove his critics wrong as he was dismissed by a rising Morkel delivery as well. The bounce in the wicket, that had aided the Kings in their win against Chennai, was fast becoming their nemesis. That trend continued as David Hussey mistimed a pull shot off Umesh Yadav, and was caught by Irfan Pathan. At that stage, the Kings were reeling at 20 for 4. But just when it looked like they would die and roll over, Siddharth Chitnis and Azhar Mahmood, with solid grit, put together a 57-run stand that pumped up every supporter in the packed-to-the-brim stands. Chitnis was more dominant in the partnership and deserved to get to a half-century, but threw it away, the bounce again being a factor. He tried pulling a delivery from Andre Russell, but the ball ballooned towards square leg. It seemed to be heading for no-man’s-land, but Irfan Pathan sprinted with zest to cover some serious ground and pull off a smart catch. The Kings could have been easily lost again but Gurkeerat Singh and Mahmood continued with the tempo and one over from Andre Russell was taken for 22 runs as they reached 141. Pune, May 19 Defending a small total of 136 on a difficult pitch, the KKR spinners restricted Warriors to a paltry 102 for eight in stipulated 20 overs. While KKR with 21 points will get a maximum of two matches in the play-offs to qualify, the Warriors led by Sourav Ganguly hit a new low losing nine consecutive matches-- a record in the IPL. If Deccan Chargers manage to win the last match, the Warriors will finish last in the points table. The Knight Riders' spinners did a commendable job as all of them shared the spoils. Shakib Al Hasan (2/28 & 42 runs) was man-of-the-match with his all-round show while Yusuf Pathan (2/12), Iqbal Abdulla (1/20), Sunil Narine (2/15) everyone chipped in with crucial wickets. The ability to fight was simply not there in Warriors whose campaign was rocked primarily due to poor form of their skipper who had one of the worst strike-rates (less than 100) for a top-order batsman in T20 cricket. The target of 137 wasn't big enough but the slowness of the track with some sharp turn definitely made things difficult for the home team whose confidence had already hit nadir. With two left-arm spinners and two off-spinners in the KKR line-up, it became a Herculean task for Warriors batsmen to negotiate. — PTI SCOREBOARD Kolkata Knight Riders McCullum c Ryder b Parnell 41 G Gambhir c Nehra b Parnell 10 J Kallis b Clarke 13 S Hasan b Kumar 42 M Tiwary not out 8 Y Pathan not out 15 Extras (b-4, lb-1, nb-2) 7 Total (4 wkts; 20 overs) 136 Fall of wickets: 1-21, 2-40, 3-107, 4-117 Bowling: Nehra 4-0-35-0, Murtaza 2-0-11-0, Parnell 4-0-18-2, Kumar 4-0-23-1, Clarke 4-0-27-1, Ganguly 2-0-17-0. Rajasthan Royals will play for pride
Jaipur, May 19 Rajasthan Royals, who have not been consistent enough, bowed out of contention for the playoffs with a five-wicket defeat against Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad. They must be ruing their close defeats against Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings but are left with no other options but to play for pride against the formidable Mumbai Indians. Skipper Rahul Dravid has already proved that he is not a spent force and that too in the shorter version of the game which has never been his forte. He, along with Australian Shane Watson, Shaun Tait, Ajinkya Rahane and others will like to prove a point with better performances. Mumbai are placed third with 18 points from 15 matches and Royal Challengers Bangalore have 17 points from 15 matches and they take on the lowly Deccan Chargers on Sunday in a day match. It will be a must-win situation for the visitors if RCB too wins. Mumbai Indians have a strong side featuring the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, South African Herschelle Gibbs, West Indian Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu. Rohit is in good nick with a hundred under his belt but Tendulkar is yet to play a big knock in the competition. The bowling also has a lethal look with Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga at the helm and sharing the top spot with 21 wickets with Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel. RP Singh too produced a good spell against Kolkata Knight Riders but it was Narine who settled the issue in favour of Mumbai. Skipper Harbhajan Singh has been struggling for form but might bounce back. Pollard has been successful in picking up a few wickets. The Pink City has been witnessing sand storms and slight showers this week but still the wicket at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium is pretty good for batting and would provide a perfect platform for big guns. — PTI |
Must-win for RCB, Chargers
look to play party poopers
Hyderabad, May 19 Opener Chris Gayle has been in explosive form with his unbeaten 128 laced with 13 sixes against the Daredevils but it won't be an easy task for RCB tomorrow as the Chargers have also beaten Rajasthan Royals in their last match to send the Jaipur-based side out of IPL. With 17 points from 15 matches, RCB have
no other option but to win tomorrow at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium
at Uppal to seal a play-off berth. The Chargers, on the other hand, are already out of the play-offs with just seven points from 15 matches so far and they have nothing to lose. They surely can spoil RCB's chances for a play-off berth. Another win tomorrow will also improve their dismal record at their home venue ever since they played their first match in the inaugural season in 2008. RCB will again expect destructive Gayle, the
top run- getter of the current IPL season, to fire on all cylinders. Gayle, who has so far accumulated 706 runs this season, has been consistent - having scored seven half-centuries besides hitting the maximum sixes (57). Stand-in skipper Virat Kohli (with 322 runs) will also like to carry on his good form after scoring an unbeaten 73 against the Daredevils to ensure that RCB emerge victorious tomorrow. RCB also have the likes of attacking batsmen in South African AB de Villiers (315 runs) and Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (281) who can single-handedly take on the opposition. It will be interesting to watch de Villiers batting here after his match-winning knock of 17-ball 47 against the same opponents in their earlier clash in Bangalore. In the bowling department also, RCB players have been in good touch with veteran off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (14 wickets), medium pacer Vinay Kumar (16), Zaheer Khan (15) and Harshal Patel (9) raring to go for a play-off berth. It, however, needs to be seen whether New Zealander Daniel Vettori, who can add more ammunition to RCB spin-bowling attack, will make himself available against the Chargers tomorrow. Bottom-placed Chargers would look to settle scores against RCB for their loss in their first-leg clash. Chargers' batting relies heavily on opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan (564 runs) and attacking Australian Cameron White (478 runs). They would need contributions from the likes of captain Kumar Sangakkara, wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, JP Duminy and Daniel Harris if they want to beat RCB tomorrow. Akshath Reddy, who scored 42 against Rajasthan Royals last night, will like to repeat his performance. — PTI |
Another bookie held for IPL betting Mumbai, May 19 The accused identified as Firoz Ansari was nabbed last night and produced today before a local court, which remanded him in police custody till May 25. On Thursday, police had held six bookies, including two top bookies-- Sonu Malad alias Batiya and Deven Kothari alias Bhaiji, on charges of betting. Ansari was basically a mediator between those who wanted to bet and the six bookies who received betting, police said. "The bookies had clients from abroad. Ansari acted as a mediator between bookies and the foreign clients," a police officer said. Police said one of the arrested bookies has claimed he had paid Rs ten crore to a Sri Lankan cricket player for fixing a match about six years ago. "Sonu and Deven are big catch for us. One of the two had told us that they had paid Rs 10 crore to a Sri Lankan player about six years ago to fix a match," the officer said. However, no details were provided on the identity of the cricketer or the match which was allegedly fixed. The investigators were verifying the betting claim of the accused, the officer said, adding the six-year-old alleged match fixing did not seem to have had any links with the Indian Premier League matches as the the first season of the IPL was played in 2008. "We don’t think it has anything to do with the IPL. IPL began in 2008 and the accused claimed he paid the money about six years ago," the officer added. The accused were using the world's largest internet betting exchange "betfair" as platform to accept betting when the cops nabbed them, police said. Police also claimed that some "big names" might surface for their alleged involvement in betting through the arrested accused. — PTI |

Olympic torch relay starts in Britain
Land's End (UK), May 19 The flame arrived in Britain from Greece yesterday and was flown to Land's End, the southwesterly tip of England, today by a Royal Navy helicopter before it was used to light the torch for the start of the 8,000 mile (12,875-kilometre) relay. Ainslie, who has won gold medals in sailing at the last three Olympics, then walked just 300 metres, allowing some of the 3,500 spectators lining the route in the morning sunshine to touch the gold-coloured torch. The yachtsman, wearing the number 001 on his T-shirt as the first torchbearer, then passed on the torch to 18-year-old Anastassia Swallow, a surfer who is hoping that her sport will one day become an Olympic discipline. Ainslie, who on Friday won a sixth world title in the Finn class as he prepares for an attempt to win a fourth Olympic gold, said it had been a special moment for him to start the relay in his home county of Cornwall. "It was pretty emotional, so much effort has gone into getting the Olympics in London and it means so much to everyone involved," he said. On its first day, the torch will be carried through Cornwall to the city of Plymouth. Over the next 10 weeks, 8,000 people will carry the torch as it makes its way around the United Kingdom and heads for the Olympic Stadium in east London for the opening ceremony on July 27. It will travel through 1,019 cities, towns and villages and visit landmarks such as Stonehenge. From June 3-7, it will go to Northern Ireland and then the Republic of Ireland -- the only country outside the United Kingdom on the torch route. No overseas legs of the relay have been planned this year after those before the 2008 Beijing Games was hit by protests against China. The flame was lit in Ancient Olympia in Greece on May 10 and was handed over to the British delegation in Athens in a rain-blighted ceremony on Thursday. It was flown to Britain encased in a special lantern on board a British Airways plane renamed The Firefly for the occasion, accompanied by football star David Beckham and Princess Anne, the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II. Beckham had the honour of lighting the first torch at the Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall on Friday. In contrast to the shoestring operation when Britain last hosted the Olympics in 1948, this year's relay is a big-budget affair, with parties and public events at each of its stops. The oldest runner will be a 100-year-old woman, while Olympians past and present and soldiers injured in Afghanistan will also take part. The chief organiser of the London Olympics, Sebastian Coe, said on Friday its arrival in Britain was "a magical moment for any host country". — AFP |
Bhupathi-Bopanna in last four of Italian tourney
Rome, May 19 The seventh-seeded Indians took an hour and nine minutes to get the better of the top seeds 6-4,

Sudha betters national record but misses Olympic mark
Shanghai, May 19 Sudha, the inaugural winner of 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games, improved upon her national record of 9:55.67s, which she set while winning the gold medal in Guangzhou, in more than six seconds to 9:49.25s. However, she barely missed the Olympic B-standard qualification mark of 9:48.00 by a whisker. "It was her first competition of the season. In fact she can able to achieve the Olympic A-standard of 9:43.00 by the time she compete in her next meet," said her coach Jasvinder Singh Bhatia. Another Indian athlete, Sinimole Paulose, finished 14th in women's 1500m with a season's best timing of 4:11.25s. It was Sinimole's second best timing of career after a 4:10.51s timing set in Chennai six years ago. The 'B' standard qualification mark for London Games in this event stood at 4:08.90s. Shanghai was the second stop in the 14-leg Samsung Diamond League series this year. In the first leg at Doha on May 11, two Indians Vikas Gowda and Tintu Luka took part. While Gowda finished sixth in discus throw with a performance of 64.10m, Tintu had to satisfy with eighth position in 800m with a timing of 2:01.09s. — PTI |

GND varsity fielded ineligible player: Pbi varsity
Patiala, May 19 Investigations made by The Tribune and the documents available under the RTI clearly indicate that the student under question, Taran Taneja, son of Yash Pal Taneja, is a regular bonafide student of SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, Hoshiarpur, which is affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. Taran not only took admission in PU, but also appeared in the BA-I exam from the same university. This establishes that he was a regular student of PU — when he played for GNDU and helped the team bag a silver medal. Football coach of Punjabi University Dalbir Singh has alleged that when they got to know that Taran was not eligible to play for GNDU, they filed a protest along with a protest fee of Rs 1,000 challenging his eligibility. The hosts said that they would look into the matter, he said. “They declared the results and asked us to give them some time to sort out the issue. “A month back, we received a letter from them stating that the protest stands cancelled as Taran was a student of GNDU. “We filed an RTI application with the principal of SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur. He sent a letter indicating that Taran was a bonafide student of their college which falls under PU. “We have written to the Association of India Universities (AIU) seeking their intervention,” Dalbir Singh said. The officiating Director of GNDU Kanwaljit Singh refuted all the allegations maintaining that Taran was a student of his university. “He has taken admission with us and I have his original class XII marksheet. He is a student of Guru Nanak College, Sukhainana Sahib, Phagwara. Moreover, he has also collected a cash award from us after the championship. “All claims of Punjabi University are false and we will submit necessary documents to the AIU to substantiate our claim,” he added. |
