Bangalore, May 14 Rayudu smashed an unbeaten 81 off 54 balls while Pollard remained not out on 52 off 31 as Mumbai Indians chased down the target of 172 with two balls to spare after staring down the barrel at 51 for five in the ninth over. Pollard smashed Gayle for a six and two fours to seal the match for Mumbai and keep their chances of qualifying for the playoffs alive. Pollard and Rayudu hit nine runs in the penultimate over off Zaheer, leaving Mumbai to score 14 in last over. The nightmare of not getting good starts haunted MI yet again when they lost three early wickets by the fourth over. MI started poorly losing Sachin Tendulkar for a first- ball duck. Zaheer Khan, who seems to be peaking at the right time for RCB, had the batsman caught by Virat Kohli at short cover point. The visitors then lost Herchelle Gibbs for two after KP Appanna fired in a superb throw at the bowler's end where Tiwary did the rest. MI were in trouble with the scorecard reading seven for two at the end of the second over. Mumbai wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik showed early signs of aggression as he carted Zaheer over backward square leg for a boundary and then worked him between the midwicket and mid on for another four. Rohit Sharma's dismissal only made things worse for MI. After the end of seventh over, Mumbai needed 132 runs off 78 balls at 10.15 per over. Pollard and Rayudu targeted left-arm spinner Appanna in the eleventh over by clobbering him for 19 runs. Pollard thrashed Appanna for two consecutive sixes, taking Mumbai to 75 for five at the end of the over. The start of match was delayed by 50 minutes due to rain and later at about 8 pm, play was stopped again for nearly seven minutes as one of the flood lights stopped working. Rayudu then upped the ante by clobbering a six and a four off Gayle. Rayudu got to his fifty with a cracking straight drive, keeping the Mumbai Indians in the hunt, before Pollard joined him in the onslaught. — PTI

Kings battle top-side Daredevils
New Delhi, May 14 Daredevils will be looking to plug the loopholes and consolidate their position at the top when they take on Kings’ XI Punjab in their penultimate home match at the Kotla tomorrow night. Daredevils have lost only two of their home matches - against Pune Warriors India and Kolkata Knight Riders - and they lost both due to their own folly. Some loose bowling, sloppy fielding and slipped catches, and the failure of Virender Sehwag to fire, were the reasons for the defeat against KKR. Mahendra Singh Dhoni exacted revenge for CSK’s defeat at Kotla, but the loss in Chennai should make Daredevils’ captain Virender Sehwag introspect, as despite priding of a solid batting lineup, and deep bowling talent, Daredevils have lost some matches, which they should have won, and could have won. Daredevils can take comfort that David Warner has proved to be an apt replacement for Kevin Pietersen, who has gone back to England for national duty. And Kings XI Punjab will be under pressure to win, as their chances of earning a berth in the play-off stage depends on how good they play in the remaining matches. The Punjab team have bolstered their confidence somewhat after their four-wicket home win against Deccan Chargers, and they come to Delhi charged up, though Daredevils are a different kettle of fish, and Kings will find them more than a handful when they try to checkmate Daredevils in their own lair. The victory against Deccan Chargers came about thanks to the last over blitzkrieg by an unknown commodity - Gurkeerat Singh, after the top order, which included Nitin Saini, in-form Mandeep Singh and Shaun Marsh, failed to fire. They cannot hope to make such last-over merry against the Delhi bowling, having the likes of Morkel, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Irfan Pathan and Shahbaz Nadeem. With 21 wickets, Morkel is the top wicket-taker of IPL-V, and he has already tarnished many a batting reputation. Kings do not have the kind of batsmen which can put the Delhi bowling to sword, and they don’t have the kind of bowling either, which can test the skills of Warner, Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene, like CSK had in pacer Ben Hilfenhaus, who claimed the scalps of Warner, Sehwag and Ojha to send Daredevils on a free fall. Punjab cannot hope to have such luxury against Daredevils at Kotla, where the hosts have already recorded four wins, not discounting the fact that Kings have a competent all-rounder in Azhar Mahmood. But whether Kings can use their talent to tame Daredevils is a matter of conjuncture , as the performances of Kings has been inconsistent, though the hosts have a tendency to depend too much on Sehwag to deliver every time he goes out to bat, which has often proved counter productive. |
Kolkata, May 14 Setting the defending champions a not-too-stiff target of 159 for a win, the Kolkata bowlers failed to contain the opposition as Chennai won the match by 5 wickets. Mike Hussey (56), and Murali Vijay started on a steady note as they were involved in a 97-run opening stand that pretty much set the tone for the Super Kings. It was left to Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo to wrap up the proceedings and the two points were sealed for Chennai when Bravo hit a six off the final ball. Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders failed to capitalise on a 99-run opening partnership between captain Gautam Gambhir and Brendon McCullum as they were restricted to 158 for six. In-form Gambhir struck a 43-ball 62, his sixth half-century this season, with six fours and three sixes while McCullum hit 37 from 29 balls with the help of four fours and a six to give Knight Riders a spectacular start. The duo put on 99 runs for the opening wicket but KKR could not capitalise on the superb start as the middle order failed to fire once again. From 99 for no loss in the 12th over, the Knight Riders were reduced to 128 for five in the 18th over as Jacques Kallis (4), Manoj Tiwary (12) and Yusuf Pathan (11) failed to live up to the challenge as the two-time defending champions Chennai made their way back. In their must win match, Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's gamble of inserting the Knight Riders in seemed to have backfired with the duo of Gambhir and McCullum putting on yet another fruitful opening partnership. Their 99-partnership was KKR's second highest, behind 113 (vs Pune Warriors India) this season, something that put themselves in sight of a challenging total. The Knight Riders were 86 for no loss after 10 overs but the remaining five overs proved quite fruitful for Chennai who made a stunning comeback, claiming two wickets for just 26 runs. The opening duo made their intention loud and clear, taking charge of Chennai pace spearhead Ben Hilfenhaus. Gambhir pulled Hilfenhaus over square leg while McCullum came down the track to hit him over mid-on in the same over to unsettle the Aussie's rhythm as his second over yielded 11 runs. The left-handed skipper hit Shadab Jakati for a six and followed it up with a boundary as KKR raced to 50 for no loss in the sixth over. — Agencies SCOREBOARD Kolkata Knight Riders Gambhir b Jakati 62 McCullum run out 37 Kallis c Ashwin b Jakati 4 Tiwari c Bravo b Jadeja 12 Yusuf c Bravo b Ashwin 11 Das not out 19 Shukla c Raina b Hilfenhaus 9 Bhatia not out 1 Extras: (lb-2, w-1) 3 Total: (6 wkts, 20 ovrs) 158 Fall of wickets: 1-99, 2-100, 3-111, 4-127, 5-128, 6-156. Television channel alleges ‘murky deals’ in IPL
New Delhi, May 14 The channel, India TV, claimed it had done a sting operation in which many players confessed on hidden camera they get much more than their prescribed auction under the table. According to the channel, its operation also revealed that spot-fixing is not only prevalent in IPL but also that first class matches are fixed and women played an important role in match-fixing. Superstars of Indian cricket and even an international player, who is a captain of one of the teams, are involved in fixing the matches, the channel said in a statement. Asked about the sting operation, BCCI chief N Srinivasan said,"We will ensure that the integrity of the game is protected. BCCI believes in the integrity of the game. We will take the strictest possible action. We will have to have the tapes and the moment we see it, whoever is the player, we will take very very strict action." — PTI |
Gurkeerat keeps KXIP in hunt Mohali, May 14 Earlier, the local side introduced five different bowlers in first six overs after Shikhar Dhawan had made his intention clear by scoring a boundary off the second ball of the match. The other opener, Parthiv Patel, continued to score runs on regular basis. Mandeep Singh not only missed three chances to run him out, but also conceded some extra runs. After Parveen’s third over, Ryan Harris was introduced into the attack but he also failed to bring any good news for the bowling side. Kings XI tasted success when Azhar Mahmood had Parthiv Patel caught by Gurkeerat in the sixth over. Captain Kumar Sangakkara joined Shikhar but young gun Parvinder Awana quickly sent him back to the pavilion with Azhar Mahmood catching him at wide slip. Sangakkara had gifted his wicket in a similar fashion during his last encounter against Kings at Hyderabad. On the other end, Shikhar continued to make his presence felt hitting a boundary almost every over. Cameron White joined him and using all their skills, both batsmen began to rotate the strike — slowly building the team’s innings. In the 12th over, Shikhar hit a clean six off Piyush Chawla and on the very next ball, he completed his half century off 36 deliveries. The Kings brought back their in-form bowler Awana in the next over but Shikhar displayed perfect shot selection and hit a six standing a mile outside the off stump and scooping the ball over the wicketkeeper. Later in the 14th and 15th over of the game, the Kings fielders missed back-to- back chances to catch Cameron White. In the 14th over, White played a blind shot at wide long off off Chawla, but Ryan Harris failed to hold on. In very next over, Piyush Chawla dropped White at extra cover off Azhar. In the meanwhile, White completed his half century. Finally in the 17th over, the Punjab team broke the 96-run stand between White and Shikhar when Awana caught him at third man offPraveen. After that, Christian did more damage by collecting 24 off 10 balls at the end. He had a 44-run partnership off 17 balls with White.
