Haridwar to be made power cut-free zone, says Bahuguna
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, May 12
Taking a leaf from Uttar Pradesh where VIP cities like Kannauj, Etawah, Mainpuri and Rampur are provided round-the-clock uninterrupted electricity supply, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna today announced Haridwar to be the first city in the state to be exempted from power cuts.

He made it clear that keeping in mind the VIP status of the city, the city needed to be made power cut-free zone.

Speaking as the chief guest at the annual convention of the Hydro Electric Employees Union at Town Hall, Bahuguna also assured that in coming months, the whole of the state would be made power cut-free zone for which government was taking necessary steps.

He said to make this happen, the state needed to have a broader outlook on the hydroelectric projects as they were the cheapest source of electricity and Uttarakhand could be a power state (Urja Pradesh) owing to the Ganga and other tributaries here.

“The saint community as well as anti-hydro project organisations should not make religious aspect a hindrance in the commencement of hydro power projects. The sanctity of the Ganga will be maintained but development is also necessary,” said the Chief Minister.

Assuring labour unions of stringent action against industrial units violating labour laws, Bahuguna said contractual labour process needed to be dealt strictly as herein the industries get safely out from the labour laws purview.

Referring to his father former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna’s pro-labour policy, the CM said he felt a sense of pride in being the chief guest on the occasion as his father was the honorary founder of the union itself.

On his announcement of a Cabinet meeting to be held in Gairsain, Bahuguna said he was in talks with the Cabinet ministers as well as officials to hold a meeting in a year. He termed the move in sync with the statehood movement and wishes of the people of the state, who envisaged Gairsain the state capital since the 80s when the separate-state movement gained momentum.

The Chief Minister also expressed his condolence on the death of two-time Haridwar municipal chairman Paras Kumar Jain.

MC officials fail to remove generator despite SDM order
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, May 12
Officials of the Municipal Council failed to remove a controversial generator installed by a private bank near Vasu Cinema on Mall Road even today despite order of the SDM, Mussoorie, Jharna Kamthaan, in this regard.

The MC employees tried to remove the generator installed by the owner last night but returned empty-handed after dismantling a few bricks saying the owner of the property objected to the action.

Swatantra Kumar, owner of the building where the private bank is expected to start operations soon, told mediapersons that the MC had given him the permission to install the generator and had charged about Rs 45,000 as annual rent. He showed the agreement with the MC and the rent receipt and said the MC was now trying to remove the generator without serving any notice on him.

The SDM, who is also the officiating executive officer of the MC, said the decision to give the land on rent to the bank for installing a generator was taken during the tenure of the previous Executive Officer, Rohitash, who had been attached to the District Magistrate office following his suspension. She said if the MC officials did not comply with her written orders to remove the generator today she would recommend to the administration to take punitive action against them.

The SDM added the argument of the property owner that the MC had given him the permission to install the generator was being investigated and if any anomaly was found, strict action would be initiated.

However, the MC employees concerned expressed helplessness in removing the generator in the absence of a heavy duty crane.

Welham’s Principal prefers merit-based admissions
Neena Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 12
Come the new academic season, saying no to the streams of admission seekers lining outside her office is a difficult act to follow, especially when one happens to be the Principal of a prestigious school. But Gunmeet Bindra, Principal of Welham Boys School, says the school’s strict adherence to a system of granting admission based on merit helps her sail through the unpleasant task with aplomb.

“The system is both student and school friendly. We evaluate the aspirants’ performance and based on merit, the admission is granted. As there are limited seats in the school, we have to do justice to both the school and the aspirants,” said Bindra, who took the charge of the school a few months ago.

She is a familiar face on the campus. She stops to have a chat with the freshers every now and then. “The private boarding schools in an Indian milieu continue to have their relevance despite the advent of quality day schools. These schools are mini worlds within themselves. The school system does demand independence, resilience, resourcefulness and a degree of emotional toughness, but you are generally respected and encouraged as an individual,” she said.

The life for a boarder at Welham Boys School is a mix of academics, sports and extracurricular activities and Bindra is quite happy with the performance of the boys on field. “Our boys have been excelling in different sports. Recently, they won the Kandhari Hockey championship, but I must add here that our thrust area is scholastic achievement followed by sports and other activities,” emphasised Bindra.

A keen hockey player and a swimmer, Bindra can be found dribbling her hockey stick in her spare time. She was selected for hockey India camp while studying at Indraprastha College (New Delhi) and is also a good swimmer. “We are appreciated for several things but it would be wonderful if our young boys and girls working in different parts of the world are recognised for possessing strong values. A great deal of emphasises has to be laid on character building and it has to be done at the school- level,” averred the Principal.

A strong proponent of equal opportunities, Bindra, however, feels that the Human Resource Development Ministry took the right decision by keeping the boarding schools out of the purview of Right to Education Act (RTE). “The demands of the boarding school are quite rigorous. It would have created more inequalities, taking a toll on both the school and the children,” she explained.

While the RTE may not be well on its way here but as part of the inclusive education programme, the school also runs a Learning Differently Centre for children with learning difficulties.

Bindra says she never planned to take up a career in teaching and was all set to take the IAS exam when fate intervened. “On hindsight, I think it was the best thing to have happened and I am happy with whatever fate has chosen for me,” she said.
