Office-bearers elected:
Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha announced list of candidates for the election for the session 2012-14. The elections would be held for the posts of president, senior vice-president, vice-president, secretary and general secretary.

Electrocuted: One Gurmeet Singh (30), a labourer, was electrocuted in Ghubaya village of Fazilka district on Saturday. The deceased’s father Sulakhan Singh informed that Gurmeet was hired by a farmer in the village and the mishap occurred when he was switching on the electric water motor in the agricultural fields. Gurmeet died on the spot. The post-mortem of the body was conducted at the local Civil Hospital.

Youth killed in mishap:
Vivek Kumar (22) died after being hit by a truck this morning. Vivek, who worked as a labourer in a factory, was on his way to Sector 66 from Industrial Area on his motorcycle when a truck hit his two-wheeler. He sustained head injuries and died. A case has been registered.

Teenager missing:
A teenager has been missing from Trikuta Nagar since May 7. As per reports, Aradhak Gupta, 18, hailing from Trikuta Nagar extension, is missing from his residence. He is 5 feet 6 inches tall and has fair complexion. The police is searching for the boy and has requested the people to inform them if they have any clues.

Lightening strikes on two: Two persons suffered critical burn injuries when lightening struck them at Sapwal village in Samba district. Reports said both of them, identified as Darshan Lal and Janak Raj, were walking towards their village when they took shelter under a tree after a heavy rainfall. “Suddenly lightening struck them due to which they suffered critical burn injuries,” the police said.

Jawan hurt in accidental fire: A soldier suffered a gunshot at Sunderbani tehsil of Poonch district. The reports said the soldier, identified as Deepak Goura of 2nd Madras Regiment, was on duty when all of a sudden a bullet went off from his service rifle and hit his stomach. Soon after the incident, he was shifted to the Army hospital. The police has registered a case and has started investigation in the incident to ascertain whether it was a suicide attempt or an accident.

Didihat residents face severe shortage of LPG:
Residents of the Didihat area in Pithoragarh are facing a severe shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Things have come to such a pass that cooking gas cylinders had to be supplied in the presence of the police on Friday. There was virtually a stampede as the consumers were desperate to get LPG cylinders that they said were being delivered after 10 days. While only 234 cylinders were supplied, 222 consumers had to return empty-handed.

Driver dies as bus falls into gorge: A driver was killed when the bus he was driving fell into a gorge near Jyolikote in Nainital district on Friday. Harish Singh, 35, a resident of Pithorgarh, was alone in the bus when the accident took place. The passengers and the conductor had got off the bus in Nainital and Jyolikote and he was scheduled to take the bus to Haldwani. The bus was being run by a private travel company.

Boy run over by school van: A 14-year-old boy died at a hospital where he was admitted after he was run over by a school van near Ramnagar on Friday. Bunty Kashyap, a resident of the Motimahal Chhota Barrage area, was going to Tanda Mallu village along with his friends to pluck raw mangoes from an orchard when the accident took place. His father was away to work as a labourer to Bhawali while his mother had gone to the Garjia Devi temple. Bunty died in a private hospital in Kashipur.

Student raped in hotel: A case of alleged rape of a girl belonging to the remote Okhalkanda area has been reported in Haldwani. The girl along with her friend was staying in a hotel in Haldwani for the past three days and they were preparing for exams. It is alleged that a distant relative of the victim’s friend committed the crime while she was alone at her hotel room on Thursday evening. Her friend had gone to visit a relative when the incident took place. The accused, Bhupal Singh Bisht, was introduced to her by her friend earlier. The police is investigating the case.
