Jalandhar, May 21
A day ahead of the hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on encroachments, the Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT) today pulled down the frontal portion of a shop and walls of two houses on a road near Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar here.

Officials of the JIT and the Municipal Corporation along with a heavy police posse reached the spot at 8 am today. As the residents of the area saw the teams approaching, they started opposing the move by lying in front of earth moving machines.

As many as 200 policemen found it difficult to handle nearly 65 protesters at the site, failing which it was jointly resolved that the residents would themselves get the land cleared in a week’s time. As a result, the teams returned after two-and-a-half-hour without much result.

Officials said the road, which was otherwise 120 feet wide, was reduced to 60 feet owing to illegal construction by the dairy owners. The JIT has plans to widen the road to make it easy for commuters to shuttle between Model House and Urban Estate. The JIT owns around 1.25 acre of barren land ahead of the site where it plans to raise a commercial complex.

While the dairies had got shifted outside the MC limit long ago, owners of cattle have continued to reside in the area.

Executive Officer, JIT, Jatinder Singh said action would be resumed next week if the encroachers fail to clear encroachments. He confirmed that he and JIT chairman Baljit Singh Neelamahal were to attend a hearing tomorrow in the High Court. Nearly 19 cases of encroachments in the city are being dealt by the court since the past over two years.

MC demolition

Ahead of the hearing, the MC also swung into action against shopkeepers at Sudama Market near Jyoti Chowk. A few temporary encroachments by shopkeepers were removed early this morning.

C-section births on the rise in city
8,155 of the total 22,516 deliveries in 2011 were caesareans

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, May 21
Call it falling endurance level in expecting women, higher incidents of biological complications or commercial angles involved, nearly 40 per cent of the deliveries in the city are caesarean.

The data available with the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation reveals that as many as 8,155 of the total 22,516 deliveries in 2011 were caesareans. There were 284 forceps deliveries and 14,077 normal.

City-based gynaecologists revealed that with women wanting to give up fast and husbands accompanying them to delivery rooms, a majority of the parents were opting for elective caesarean sections (C-section), unmindful of the fact that the post-delivery recovery was slow.

Dr Gurpreet Kaur, gynaecologist at Jalandhar Cantonment, says: "Women cannot bear pain for more than an hour. Their husbands, too, turn emotional saying they cannot see their wives screaming with pain and quickly opt for surgical mode. There certainly will be higher percentage of caesarean deliveries in Ludhiana than in Jalandhar and even higher in cities like Delhi. People want a fast-track mode on everything." She added that the percentage of caesarean cases was likely to jump from 40 to 80 per cent in the coming years.

Claiming that scanning had become a blessing in cases involving complications, doctors have also confided that there has been a commercial angle to it. "Since a caesarean case costs high, there is high profitability. At times, doctors and radiologists are hand-in-glove who make the patient and her family panicky while mentally preparing them for a surgical intervention. Since there is a large number of private nursing homes in the city and, child birth has become a booming business as well," a civil hospital doctor said on a condition of anonymity.

Dr Jasmine, an In vitro Fertilisation (IVF) expert, said infertility cases were on the rise for which IVF comes as a big help. "All such deliveries have to be caesarean in any case," she added, saying a number of childless NRI couples were taking treatment in the city and delivering babies here.

Jalandhar, May 21
A group of five budding engineers from Lovely Professional University (LPU) have come up with a driverless car which can be controlled from a mobile phone sitting in any part of the world.

Aimed for use in man-less missions as in defence, agriculture for chemical sprays and mining, the students today demonstrated the application of the wireless technology making use of an electric golf car, internet, mobile phone, laptop, C+ language programming, micro-controller board with ATMEGA 128 IC and an electrical control circuit.

The students who have come up with the unique project include Bikas of final year MTech electronics and communication engineering, Lokesh Ramina of final year BTech in electronics and communication engineering, Rahul Jain and Suvendu, both of BTech mechanical engineering, Suvendu, mechanical engineering and Barkha of BTech computer science engineering. They claimed that not just an electric car but any car of any make could be auto-driven using the technology.

The students said any internet service provider loaded with special newly designed software could be used to manoeuvre the car, which could run in auto as well as manual mode. They said that since the car had cameras in the front and the hind part, it even helped grab images in real time.

The students said that they conceived the idea during one of the activities held as a part of the Robotics and Intelligent System Community, a club meant for promoting innovation on the campus. They said that they had come with a prototype of it in January but they just kept on improving its features.

The students said that they were also in the process of filing a patent on this. "We have checked on the Net and have so far not found anyone using the technology. We are also in the process of taking the project to some auto companies interested in buying the idea", they added. The students said that they were also planning to use robots with the car and putting them for various uses.

Chancellor Ashok Mittal said the project cost came at around Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000. "The university has provided funds for the project. We have created special fund for the purpose and nearly 150 students have been working on such assignments," he added.

Jalandhar, May 21
Three years after the eruption of massive fire at a fuel depot of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in Jaipur, Rajasthan, local residents fear the recurrence of the same incident at an IOC depot located in the densely populated area of the city.

Over a dozen localities, including Suchi Pind, Karol Bagh, Rail Vihar, Sangam Vihar, Preet Enclave and Mann Singh Nagar are located just near the Indian Oil depot.

Apart from this, Guru Gobind Singh Avenue and Surya Enclave, both developed by the Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT), are also not far away from the depot. Nearly one lakh persons are residing in these localities.

So much so Lawrence International and DIPS Schools are also situated adjacent to the depot, whereas Guru Nanak Dev (GND) University Regional Centre is also located within 0.5 km from the depot.

While IOC Chief Terminal Manager Ranjan Srivastva could not be contacted despite repeated attempts, Surjit Singh of Guru Gobind Singh Avenue and Kulwant Singh of Vikas Motors near the depot said, “This part of the city is virtually sitting on a tinderbox, ready to explode anytime. There is always a fear of impending danger in case of eruption of fire at the depot among the residents.”

Besides bad smell emerging from the IOC depot, the parking of dozens of oil tankers on the road creates problems to the residents.

Gurdial Singh and Jarnail Singh of the Sangam Vihar locality said, “The smell emanating from the depot is a nuisance for the residents and the students of the two nearby schools and GND University Regional Centre.”

Surjit, Kulwant, Gurdial and Jarnail demanded that the depot be shifted from the thickly populated area to avert any major mishap.

Jalandhar, May 21
While all the main political parties, including the ruling alliance partners SAD and BJP and the opposition Congress, are holding high-level meetings for finalising their candidates for the forthcoming Municipal Corporation (MC) elections, activists of the youth wings of all these parties want that adequate preference should be given to them while allotting ticket.

The district president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Minta Kochar, said eight BJYM activists had applied for BJP ticket for various wards of the MC.

Both the BJYM district president Minta Kochar and its secretary Himanshu Sharma are also interested in contesting the MC polls, scheduled for June 10. While Kochar has applied for Ward 27, Himanshu has applied for BJP ticket from Ward 28.

The other prominent BJYM activists who have applied for BJP ticket include Rajiv Dhingra (Ward 37), former BJYM president Kishan Lal Sharma (Ward 7) and Ashok Sarin (Ward 31).

Similarly, Punjab Youth Congress president Vikramjit Chaudhary said he had already submitted a list of seven youth activists to Ashwani Sekhri, Punjab Congress observer, for considering their names while making recommendations to Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh.

Being a member of the state-level campaign and screening committee for MC polls, he would do his level best to get adequate number of seats for the youth activists, he added.

In the same way, activists of the Youth Akali Dal are also hopeful that they would be considered positively while allocating tickets by the SAD leadership.

While the SAD is contesting on 22 seats, its alliance partner BJP is fielding its candidates on the remaining 38 seats of the 60-member Municipal Corporation House.

Implement RTE Act properly: Forum
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, May 21
The newly formed Education Awareness Forum says that it will strongly protest if any school treats the Right to Education Act carelessly.

The forum said it would ensure that the RTE Act was properly implemented and deserving children get its benefit.

Talking to mediapersons here, members of the forum said as per the directions of the Supreme Court, issued earlier this year, it was mandatory for all the government, private and government-aided private schools to provide free education to at least 25 per cent of the students (from ages 6 to 14) of their school.

Forum convener Jarnail Singh Garhdiwal said while it was bothersome that the RTE was not being implemented properly, it was also condemnable that the right to free education had been reserved only for students till 14 years of age.

He said the right needed to be extended to students till the graduation level.

The forum demanded that 50 per cent students, instead of only 25 per cent, should get free education under the Act.

Forum members said any student from the financially weaker sections, who was encountering difficulty in getting admission to a school, was free to bring his/her case to them and they would actively pursue it.
