Jalandhar, May 17
Ward Number 12 is a classic example of underdevelopment. Even the sitting councillor admits that the ward has been ignored and has seen little development. A majority of the localities in the ward are still without sewerage connections. The ward is full of garbage dumps, sewage ponds, a garbage-clogged ganda nullah, open drains on village streets and bad roads.

The ward also has unapproved colonies, including Master Mehnga Singh Colony, Mohinder Singh Colony, Golden Colony (phases I and II), Boonga Colony and Model Estate.

Though some of these colonies have recently been approved, it will still take time before residents of these localities see proper sewerage network and roads.

A resident who lives near the two-kilometre stretch of ganda nullah passing through the Brring village says: “We have to deal with the stench emanating from the nullah all through the day. We were hoping that the problem will be resolved once the sewerage lines are laid, but the work is still not complete. The nullah is almost an official dump where residents and safai karmcharis dump garbage. While sewerage has been laid in almost all the neighbouring wards, our ward is lagging behind in development works,” he said.

Both the Congress and SAD are eager to take credit for the funds earmarked for laying sewerage lines. The sitting councillor says it is due to her efforts that the project began. The Opposition, however, says the credit for development goes to MLA Manoranjan Kalia.

Prospective candidates
The sitting councillor, Jasvir Kaur, is likely to be the Congress candidate, and the SAD may field Gurmej Kaur, wife of SAD leader Nachattar Das, from the ward. Areas in the wardaBrring village, Golden Colony, Master Mehnga Singh Colony, Mohinder Singh Colony, New Defence Colony, Boonga Colony, Panchsheel Colony, Model Estate, Deep Nagar.

Amount spent
Before the tenure of the sitting Congress councillor Jasvir Kaur, her husband Mukand Lal was the councillor of the ward. Jasvir Kaur admits that during her tenure a meagre Rs 34 lakh has been spent in the ward. "The files were passed, but we never got the money." In her tenure, Rs 29 lakh was spent on development works at Paragpur and Rs 5 lakh on development works at the Paragpur shamshan ghat. The councillor says it was due to her efforts that Rs 42 crore was earmarked for laying of sewerage lines in the ward.

Development works get boost ahead of MC polls

Jalandhar, May 17
With just four days left for the implementation of the election code for the June 10 MC polls, contractors were today seen making a beeline to the MC office for receiving copies of work orders already approved by its finance committee.

Contractors of various development works, including road re-carpeting, tubewell installation and streetlights, were today seen flocking the offices of the SEs of the concerned departments ahead of the code which is scheduled to come into force on May 21.

While almost all new B&R works have been approved only for the SAD-BJP wards, there also is a clear-cut discrimination in the allotment of streetlight works.

During the recent allotment of works of installation of streetlights points, sodium lamps and fancy lights, the ruling SAD-BJP councillors have taken the lion’s share with works to the tune of Rs 93.76 lakh being cleared in their wards. The remaining works estimated at around Rs 38.57 lakh have gone for wards of the opposition councillors.

Two SAD councillors -Kamaljit Bhatia, who is also the Senior Deputy Mayor, and Narinder Kaur, councillor of Ward 54 -alone have managed to get streetlight projects worth Rs 36 lakh and Rs 22.10 lakh, respectively, cleared.

Among BJP leaders, Kirpal Singh Buti of Ward 42 and Rimpi Prabhakar of Ward 4 seem to have been the favourite lots with projects over Rs 12 lakh being sanctioned for colonies in their areas. There are five other BJP councillors who have got their projects through.aEven as six Congress councillors have got their streetlights projects cleared, Aruna Arora of Ward 55 seems to have been the most favoured one with projects to the tune of Rs 13.88 lakh getting cleared. These include high mast lights in Rainbow Park and Narula Park in the posh Model Town area. An amount of Rs 6.36 lakh is also being spent on street lights of the same colony.

Parties start receiving applications
With polls having been announced, all political parties have started receiving applications from candidates for their local offices. The BJP has been holding workers’ meets constituency-wise since last evening. A joint meeting has been planned under all local MLAs and state president for May 20. The party has also opened an election office at Banda Bahadur Nagar.

Jalandhar, May 17

Come monsoon and visitors to the administrative complex will not face waterlogging problem as the Municipal Corporation has sanctioned a storm water drain project in the area.

As many as 11 points for rainwater drains have been earmarked for its quick disposal. Water stagnation had been a perpetual problem in the area, especially during monsoon.

The common gate in front of the PUDA office remains inundated for days after a heavy spell of rain. SAD councillor of Ward 31 Raminder Kaur Dhinsa said the road gullies were being made to overcome the seasonal problem.

Also, as part of the Centre’s city beautification project, the entire area around the tehsil complex is being spruced up. The old concrete footpaths have been removed replacing them with the new ones having inter-locking tiles. The central verges, too, have been rebuilt raising their height so that the pedestrians do not cross them every now and then, thus making the road less accident-prone.
