Disease outbreaks are the only reality here
Kusum Arora Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, May 13 The ward has always remained in the news for health hazards like diarrhoea, jaundice and typhoid due to the insanitary conditions prevailing in most of the colonies of the ward. "Whether it is peak summers, winters or monsoons, people in our locality are always found ill due to one or the other problem. But neither the councillor nor the MC officials ever turned up to provide a permanent solution to our problems", said Kamlesh Devi, a resident of Ekta Nagar. "The MC officials take action only after a disease outbreak is reported from our localities. Last year during monsoons, there was jaundice outbreak. Although the officials at that time had assured us of a permanent solution to this problem, but nothing has happened after that", said residents of Joginder Nagar. As if this was not enough, drinking water is also a luxury in this part of the ward. Almost every second home faces this problem. "We are tired of filling dirty water in bottles and handing these to the MC authorities for tests. Even yesterday, dirt flowed in with the tap water", said Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Ekta Nagar. The residents also blamed the councillor as well as the MC officials for providing adequate sanitation facilities. "We cannot recall if any safai karamcharis from the MC ever visited our localities. The only time when we witnessed a little change was ahead of the assembly elections when the party workers would get areas cleaned up for holding meetings in different wards," the residents claimed. Amount spent
The councillor of the ward, Mandeep Kaur Multani, said she spent a whopping amount of around Rs 8 crore on various development works, which includes - construction of cemented streets, drains, installation of tubewells and roads. "I spent Rs 3.50 crore on the construction of streets and drains, Rs 55 lakh on the installation of three new tubewells in New Beant Nagar, Wazir Singh Enclave and Joginder Nagar. As much as Rs 90 lakh each was spent on laying inter-locking tiles in Beant Nagar and Rs 90 lakh and Mohan Vihar and Rs 85 lakh was spent on the construction of streets in Joginder Nagar and New Ekta Nagar," she added.

Little maestros delight the Japanese
Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, May 13 The trio Surpriya and Rishabh (granddaughter and grandson of Ustad Lachman Singh Seen) and Sandeep (grandson of Pt. Ramakant presented 11 concerts at the city of Tajimi in the Gifu Cen state of Japan. They presented jugalbandis - Surpriya on santoor and Rishabh on sitar and Sandeep on tabla - for the crowds keen to dig into the sound of Indian music. While Surpriya (18) began fancying the santoor about four years ago, younger Rishabh’s (15) love for the sitar goes down to when he was five. Both of then had lessons from their ‘dadu’ as kids. After which they moved on to learning from their father the talented sitar exponent Manu Seen. Sandeep (16) started as early as five and has been learning from his grandfather tabla maestro Pt. Ramakant since then. With sparkle in their eyes, the trio shared their experiences. How did they start: Surpriya: “I had told my music teacher about four years ago that I wanted to learn the santoor. A video with Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma playing it against a hilly backdrop had triggered my keenness to learn the instrument. Another two years passed and I then shared my intent with my father. The very next he got me a santoor. In a few months I began training.” Rishabh: “I started when I was five. Earlier on I just went to the sitar room, fiddled with the sitar until my fingers got cut like the grown ups and proudly showed everyone how hard I had been working. But then I grew up and started learning more seriously.” Sandeep: “I liked nana ji play when I was small. I was fascinated by the tabla. I started at age five and have regularly been training under him ever since.” The Japan experience: Surpriya: “People over there have respect for Indian music and are curious for it. They asked us how our instruments worked. No one left while we played. It was a privilege to play for such audience.” Rishabh: “In India people understand music well. Over there they do not understand but are patient listeners.” Sandeep: “On one of our first concerts, the entire gathering refused to take seats out of respect. They listened to our entire 20-minute-long recital while standing.” Future plans: Surpriya: She wants to be an IAS. But quickly adds, “I will never give up playing the Santoor.” Rishabh: He is focused on the sitar. He has also played at the Harivallabh contests and after some more training plans to move to Delhi or Mumbai for further talim and deeper knowleddge of the instrument. Sandeep: He has also played at the Harivllabh. He plans to continue his talim in the tabla and along with it, is studying for engineering. |
Workers in forging industry suffer from hearing loss: Study
Jalandhar, May 13 These glaring facts came to fore in the findings of a research titled ‘Occupational noise exposure and noise induced hearing loss (NIHL)’ by Dr Lakhwinder Pal Singh and Dr Arvind Bhardwaj from the Department of Industrial Production Engineering of Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) and Dr Kishore Kumar Deepak from Department of Physiology from AIIMS, New Delhi. For the research, 165 workers were selected for audiometric test. Another group of 57 persons was selected from normal population. Dr Lakhwinder said, “Workers in small-scale casting and forging units work under sub-contractors, who ignore this significant aspect of hearing. It was also observed that the workers do not expect any health care and safety measures from their managements. Rather they accept hazards and poor working conditions as part of their jobs and lives.” “It is shocking to see that the managements of the forging units have not enforced personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers in these units. In fact none of the managements had provided earplugs to workers, which is a major reason for hearing loss”, he said. “Later we took the workers for audiometry to our institute, where we noticed huge hearing loss. This is a serious problem and the managements of the forging units should approach IITs and NITs to implement the findings of such research. After all the research has been conducted so as to help the workers”, said Dr Lakhwinder. He also suggested the managements should get the workers checked after every six months and job rotation should be implemented so that the workers get a chance to work in low noise areas. “Around 85 per cent of workers work more than eight hours a day with an additional over time of two to four hours every day,” he said. Expert suggestions The researchers said the casting and forging industry should implement a complete hearing conservation programme, including training, audiometry, job rotation and the use of hearing protection devices. |
