Flights fail to take off, land
Chandigarh, May 17
No flights from Chandigarh could take off due to bad weather and low visibility today. As a result, the outgoing as well incoming flights were cancelled. Although the passengers scheduled to fly from Chandigarh were informed about the cancellation by the airlines, many passengers still reached the airport in the hope that the weather would change and the services would resume.

Further delay expected
New Delhi, May 17
Further delay in the selection of Panjab University's new Vice-Chancellor is imminent with the Government telling the Chancellor's office that UGC regulations in respect of VC's appointment are applicable to PU. The three member search committee the Chancellor (Vice President Hamid Ansari) constituted in February to suggest a panel of names for the next PU V-C doesn't conform to UGC regulations and may have to be changed. The ball is however in the Chancellor's court.

MC braces to tackle market fires

2 of CITCO station staff found guilty of fuel pilferage

The vigilance inquiry into the alleged pilferage of fuel from the CITCO-run filling station at Sector 9 here has found two officials responsible for diesel unaccounted for.

In the infamous Kushpreet kidnapping and murder case, three prosecution witnesses deposed before a local court here today. According to the information, statements of Suresh Gupta, owner of a hardware shop, Deepak Kumar, manager of a private bank, and a Chandigarh police constable were recorded in the court today.

Power staff rectify fault in underground cable

Three days after a fault occurred in the power supply line, which has been laid from Sectors 28 to 18, the UT Electricity Department staff rectified it today with the help of a fault-finding machine hired from the Punjab government. The fault in the underground cable had led a power crisis in many sectors.

Student found dead at hostel
Chandigarh, May 17
A 17-year-old boy was reportedly found dead under mysterious circumstances in his hostel room of SD Public School, Sector 32, this morning. Sarthik Goyal, a commerce student and native of Yamunanagar town in Haryana, did not wake up in the morning at his hostel room after which he was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital-32 where the doctors declared him brought dead, the police said.

Residents of the Shivalik Vihar Colony here are up in arms as they are being forced to consume muddy water for the last five months. Their complaints to the authorities and local leaders have fallen on deaf ears. The colony has a population of about 1,500.

No headway in robbery case
Panchkula, May 17
The police has failed to make any breakthrough in the case of robbery of Rs 4.4 lakh by four armed youths here yesterday. The footage retrieved from the ICICI Bank, from where victim Brij Mohan withdrew the money before he was shot at, did not provide any clue about the accused, sources said.

58 visually impaired persons appointed govt teacher
Mohali, May 17
Visually impaired teachers rejoice after receiving appointment letters at the Government Model Senior Secondary School in Phase IIIBI of Mohali on Thursday. A total of 58 visually impaired persons were handed over appointment letters as government teacher here today. Punjab Education Minister Sikandar Singh Malooka gave them the letters during a function at the Government Model Senior Secondary School in Phase IIIBI.

10 acres cleared of encroachment
Panchkula, May 17 Starting an anti-encroachment drive at Saketri village, a team of HUDA employees cleared over 10 acres by removing nearly 250 'jhuggis'. The land was a part of Sectors 1 and 2 of the Mansa Devi Complex. The team reached the spot at 10:30 am.

Decision on online admission not taken yet
Chandigarh, May 17
It’s not sure whether the admissions to BCom I in the PU affiliated colleges in Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur districts would be held online as the syndicate in its meeting today called for Panjab University has decided to review the recommendation that admission to BCom I for the session 2012-13 be centralised or not.

College BSc students can opt geology, geography
Chandigarh, May 17
In a decision that may prove a boon for the science students opting for BSc in colleges affiliated to Panjab University the students will now have a option of studying geology and geography as one of the optional subjects out total three optional subjects while pursuing their degree. Dr Dalip Kumar, fellow at PU, had moved this proposal that was tabled before the syndicate, which gave its approval today. Earlier, there was a provision that a BSc student had to clear two science subjects in the examination and had an option of taking the third optional subject from arts stream, excluding geology and geography, however, now the BSc students will have the option of studying these subjects also.

PU to get tough on affiliation issue
Chandigarh, May 17
Panjab University is getting stricter in its dealings with the over 180 affiliated colleges. The university has devised a performa for the colleges, which needs to be fulfilled for getting affiliation for the courses.

Nod to Varsity decision on compartment
Chandigarh, May 17
The PU syndicate also approved allowing of the students getting compartment in final-year of graduation admitted in MA under the semester system in the university. Presently, with the annual system the university used to give provisional admission to the compartment students, however, PU has now shifted to the semester system and there is no provision to admit a student with compartment.

Truck driver commits suicide
Dera Bassi, May 17
A truck driver committed suicide in his room here this morning. His body was found hanging from a ceiling fan. It was noticed by his neighbours after there was no response to knocking at the door. He was identified as Venod Kumar. He hailed from Uttarakhand.

Hundreds of BJP workers, under the banner of the kisan morcha, organised a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) here today. They burnt an effigy of the Centre for its 'anti-farmer' policies. They raised slogans against the Centre and submitted a memorandum to the DC.

Three-year jail for drug peddler

In an 11-year-old drug-peddling case, a local court today awarded three-year imprisonment to Surjit Singh, a resident of Ambala. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

2 bank officials booked in Royal Empire case
Zirakpur, May 17
The police today booked two officials with the Indian Overseas Bank, including a manager, who had allegedly favoured Jeewan Garg, the main accused in the Royal Empire case, by foregoing certain formalities while giving him a loan of Rs 10 crore.
