Flights fail to take off, land
Chandigarh, May 17
No flights from Chandigarh could take off due to bad weather and low visibility today. As a result, the outgoing as well incoming flights were cancelled.
Although the passengers scheduled to fly from Chandigarh were informed about the cancellation by the airlines, many passengers still reached the airport in the hope that the weather would change and the services would resume.
Further delay expected
New Delhi, May 17
Further delay in the selection of Panjab University's new Vice-Chancellor is imminent with the Government telling the Chancellor's office that UGC regulations in respect of VC's appointment are applicable to PU. The three member search committee the Chancellor (Vice President Hamid Ansari) constituted in February to suggest a panel of names for the next PU V-C doesn't conform to UGC regulations and may have to be changed. The ball is however in the Chancellor's court.
MC braces to tackle market fires

Power staff rectify fault in underground cable

Three days after a fault occurred in the power supply line, which has been laid from Sectors 28 to 18, the UT Electricity Department staff rectified it today with the help of a fault-finding machine hired from the Punjab government. The fault in the underground cable had led a power crisis in many sectors.
Student found dead at hostel

A 17-year-old boy was reportedly found dead under mysterious circumstances in his hostel room of SD Public School, Sector 32, this
morning.
Sarthik Goyal, a commerce student and native of Yamunanagar town in
Haryana, did not wake up in the morning at his hostel room after which he was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital-32 where the doctors declared him brought dead, the police said.
Residents get muddy water
Zirakpur, May 17
Residents of the Shivalik Vihar Colony here are up in arms as they are being forced to consume muddy water for the last five months.
Their complaints to the authorities and local leaders have fallen on deaf ears. The colony has a population of about 1,500.

No headway in robbery case
Panchkula, May 17
The police has failed to make any breakthrough in the case of robbery of Rs 4.4 lakh by four armed youths here yesterday.
The footage retrieved from the ICICI Bank, from where victim Brij Mohan withdrew the money before he was shot at, did not provide any clue about the accused, sources said.

College BSc students can opt geology, geography

In a decision that may prove a boon for the science students opting for BSc in colleges affiliated to Panjab University the students will now have a option of studying geology and geography as one of the optional subjects out total three optional subjects while pursuing their degree. Dr Dalip Kumar, fellow at PU, had moved this proposal that was tabled before the syndicate, which gave its approval today. Earlier, there was a provision that a BSc student had to clear two science subjects in the examination and had an option of taking the third optional subject from arts stream, excluding geology and geography, however, now the BSc students will have the option of studying these subjects also.
PU to get tough on affiliation issue

Panjab University is getting stricter in its dealings with the over 180 affiliated colleges.
The university has devised a performa for the colleges, which needs to be fulfilled for getting affiliation for the courses.
Nod to Varsity decision on compartment

The PU syndicate also approved allowing of the students getting compartment in final-year of graduation admitted in MA under the semester system in the university. Presently, with the annual system the university used to give provisional admission to the compartment students, however, PU has now shifted to the semester system and there is no provision to admit a student with compartment.
