Truck driver commits suicide

Dera Bassi, May 17
A truck driver committed suicide in his room here this morning. His body was found hanging from a ceiling fan.
It was noticed by his neighbours after there was no response to knocking at the door. He was identified as Venod Kumar. He hailed from Uttarakhand.

His family was out of town at present. The body was kept at the Civil Hospital.

Centre's effigy burnt

Fatehgarh Sahib, May 17
Hundreds of BJP workers, under the banner of the kisan morcha, organised a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) here today. They burnt an effigy of the Centre for its 'anti-farmer' policies. They raised slogans against the Centre and submitted a memorandum to the DC.

Addressing the gathering, Rajnish Bedi and Jagdeep Singh Sodhi said that government had been harassing farmers through agencies like the FCI.

They said the government did not provide adequate gunny bags and farmers had to spend days at grain markets.

They added that the government was not clearing the foodgrain procured and there was no space to store.

They said they had demanded Rs 1,800 as MSP for wheat, but the government had given only Rs 1,285.

Three-year jail for drug peddler

Chandigarh, May 17
In an 11-year-old drug-peddling case, a local court today awarded three-year imprisonment to Surjit Singh, a resident of Ambala. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.

The case dates back to October, 2001, when the police had arrested Surjit at the bus stand at Sector 43 along with 10 kg of poppy husk. The police had received a tip-off and laid a trap to arrest him. The FIR had been registered under the NDPS Act.

Lawyers end boycott of court

Chandigarh, May 17
The members of the District Bar Association (DBA) today decided to end boycott of Judicial Magistrate (first class) Parinder Singh's court.

The decision to boycott the Judicial Magistrate's court was taken during a house meeting of the DBA on Friday. Aggrieved at the Judicial Magistrate's conduct, the DBA had decided to boycott his court.

President of the association NK Nanda said two High Court Judges Alok Singh and TPS Mann had given them an assurance and thereafter they decided to resume work at the Judicial Magistrate's court. — TNS

2 bank officials booked in Royal Empire case

Zirakpur, May 17
The police today booked two officials with the Indian Overseas Bank, including a manager, who had allegedly favoured Jeewan Garg, the main accused in the Royal Empire case, by foregoing certain formalities while giving him a loan of Rs 10 crore.

The accused were identified as Asini Bhateja, branch manager, and PK Bansal, another official. “The loan had to be given in instalments. Garg was given Rs 10 crore as loan in one go. We are investigating all details," said station house officer Tarlochan Singh.

He added that Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC were slapped on them. The police also booked some property dealers, including Sunit Garg and Pardip Goyal.

The realtors were found luring persons into buying flats at Garg's projects, said the police. The SHO said complaints were pouring in and fresh cases were being registered.

“We have dispatched teams to various places to locate Garg and his family. We have got some clues. Garg will be nabbed soon,” said DSP Anil Kumar.

A delegation of the Royal Empire Residents Welfare Association met Mohali SSP GS Bhullar and demanded prompt and stern action against the culprits. He assured them that all complaints were being addressed on a priority basis.

Local MLA NK Sharma held a meeting with victims this evening. He assured them that their money would not go waste.

“The matter is serious and crores are involved. Officials will be deputed to check the documents of claimants. Rightful claimants will be given possession of their property soon,” he said.

DPS-40, APJ Kharar register wins

The cricket teams of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, (DPS-40) and APJ Kharar registered wins in their respective matches of ongoing 4th Saupin's-32 Inter-School Gold Cup Cricket Tournament for boys (U-14), being held, here today.

In the first match, the team of DPS-40 defeated YPS, Mohali, by a margin of 110 runs.

On the other hand, APJ, Kharar, won the second match of the day after defeating Shivalik School, Mohali, by 8 wickets. After winning the toss, Shivalik School, Mohali, elected to bat first and scored 114 runs in the allotted 20 overs.

Home team lose match by 8 wickets

Chasing Ludhiana’s low total of 200 runs, the local cricket team of Chandigarh fumbled on the total of 69 runs at the end of day’s play, during the Dhruv Pandove Pandove Cricket Trophy (U-19), held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

The local side lost five wickets in 23 overs on the mere total of 69 runs. Skipper, Jaskaranveer Singh, was the only main scorer for his unbeaten knock of 42 off 68 including 8 boundaries.

For Ludhiana, medium pacer Bhupinder Singh claimed 2 for 12 while right arm leg spinner Sandeep Singh took 2 for 33.

Earlier, after winning the toss the visiting side opted to bat first and bundled out on the total of 200 runs. The team lost their first wicket on the score of 7 after Nimit (5) Malhan was caught by Udit Hari Mehta off Rajpal.

Sunny Pandey and Nikhil Chaudhary scored 34 runs for the second wicket before Sunny Pandey was snapped by Ankit off Abhilash for 16. Another pair of Nikhil Chaudhary and Abhinav Bhatia added 46 runs for the 3rd wicket before Abhunav Bhatia was caught by Rajpal off right arm leg spinner Anil.

Nikhil Chaudhary was the next to on 42 off 78 included 8 boundaries while Prabhtaj Singh (27) and Khushwinder Sharma (29) added a crucial 54 runs for the sixth wickets. For the Chandigarh team, right arm leg spinner Anil took a five-wicket haul after giving 42 runs while Ankit Bhatia claimed 2 for 16.

In the second match, played between Mohali and Amritsar at Gandhi Grounds Amritsar, the home team opted to bat first and scored 387 for 7 in 95 over till the end of day’s play. Karan Sharma (61), Abhinav Sharma (84), Navneet Singh (86) and Mohit Handa (89) were the principal scorers for the team. For Mohali, Maninder Singh claimed 4 for 78.

Mansab Gill (41off 93 with 8 boundaries) and Mandeep Singh (35 off 91 with 5 boundaries) were the other main scorers for the team. For the bowling side, Karan Kaila grabbed 3 for 64.

In a match of the ongoing 1st LIC T-20 Cricket Tournament for Women, Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20 (GMSSS-20), here today.

The winning side defeated the rivals by seven wickets. Batting first, GMSSS-20 was bundled out on a mere total of 37 runs in eight overs. Vandana (12) and Lovleen (10) were the only players to attain the double figures. For the bowling side, Shagun took 4 for 3 while Dolly claimed 3 for 8 and Preeti grabbed 2 for 5.

The winning side achieved the target in six overs with Poonam scoring 13 and Risheta 12.
