Ward reservation: houseWives turn ticket seekers
Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, May 1 Most of these women, who have always been made to confine themselves to home, hearth and well-being of the children, are being taken along to social functions and introduced in the areas of the ward as an effort to brighten their prospects of getting a ticket. The SAD councillor from Ward 39, Gurdip Singh Nagra, said he had thought that his ward would go unreserved even this time as it did not fall in the 2,5,8,… sequence as was being proposed, but it came out in a different pattern. “I am left with no choice but to prepare my wife Jaspal Kaur Nagra for the contest. She has been a housewife throughout, but now I intend to take her along at social and political gatherings,” he said. Wards goes general, women sent back home
On the contrary, majority of the women who have put in work as councillors for the past five years on account of their wards getting reserved for the fairer sex are preparing to get into the shell again. Since their requirement is over, they are being sent packing at a time when they had started learning nuances of politics and working of the MC. Darshan Singh, father-in-law of Congress councillor Anup Kaur from Ward 34, is gearing up to seek a ticket as the ward which was reserved for women in the last tenure has been made general again. He, however, faces a tough battle for ticket from Sushma Gautam from the same party. Likewise, it is the husband of BJP councillor Yogita Gupta, Ashu Gupta, who is the contender for ticket from Ward 25. Interestingly, even earlier it was either Ashu or her father-in-law Gopal Pethewale who had been into a more prominent role. This, despite the fact that Yogita had even been nominated as the trustee of Jalandhar Improvement Trust. Just few months after she got elected as a councillor and nominated as a trustee, she had conceived her second son and had to remain away from political activities for almost a year. Ashu says, “This time it will be either him or his father. It will be a ‘family decision’.” For most people active in local politics, councillorship has to be within the family. In all those tenures that the ward is general, they prefer to contest themselves or else it is their better halves who are asked to step in as rubber stamps. Since Ward 6 of BSP candidate Hans Raj Rana has been made reserved, he is planning to rope in his wife Madhu Rana for the job. He adds, “She has been a councillor from 2002-07 as well when the ward was reserved.” Out of a similar compulsion, SAD councillor of Ward 29 Kuldip Singh Oberoi is preparing to field his wife Arvinder Kaur Oberoi for the job again. Working wife, so no choice
But there are some councillors who are not so lucky to have their wives or mothers available for the job. Since Ward 14 has been reserved, Congress councillor Kuljit Singh Babbi does not have a choice from home. He says, “My wife is a teacher in Doaba Khalsa School and my mother does not keep well. I will have to think of other options”. Kin of BJP MLAs likely to contest
Cousin of MLA KD Bhandari Dinesh Bhandari is likely to contest polls from Ward 27, currently represented by Congress councillor Mahesh Puri. There also are speculations of Jimmy Kalia, uncle of Jalandhar Central MLA Manoranjan Kalia, who is likely to contest from Ward 24, instead of Ward 26 from where he had contested unsuccessfully in the last MC polls. Jimmy has had to shift as Ward 26 has gone reserved for women. He remained a de facto councillor of Ward 26 as Congress councillor Sukhmeet Deputy went behind bars in a criminal case ever since he won polls. Will woman councillor be a Mayor?
It is perhaps owing to the fact that there are chances of a woman councillor to be taken as the Mayor that some husbands are thinking of handing over the baton to the women folk from the house despite their ward getting unreserved. Aruna Arora, sitting councillor from Ward 55, is likely to re-contest. Congress councillor from Ward 30 (general) Rajinder Beri, who had unsuccessfully contested Assembly polls recently, too is likely to field his wife Uma Beri. Will Mayor Rathour re-contest?
The biggest question that everyone is asking is whether Mayor Rakesh Rathour will contest or not. Rathour when asked about the same had a very diplomatic answer, “It is up to the party to decide on the issue.” Asked if he was interested, came the reply, “I will be interested only if the party is keen”. Told that he was too diplomatic with the answer, he said, “I have learnt the art as a politician.” |
Month on, district administration fails to hold parking lot auction
Jalandhar, May 1 The old contractor, who has been allowed to use the complex for parking of vehicles, has been so far been using all ways to extract more money by levying charges even on Saturdays and government holidays. The administration on two occasions tried to get the auction done, but could not find response as the bidders demanded that either a parking site outside a side gate of the tehsil complex also be given as last year or the reserve price be brought down. The auction for parking lot at the district administrative complex was first put off on March 26 when 12 bidders who had come to attend the auction had raised the same issue. They were told that the Municipal Corporation authorities would hold a separate auction for the parking lot along the road near the side gate as they had claimed that it was their site. At this, the bidders demanded that the reserve price, which is equal to last year’s auction price, be slashed from Rs 19.16 lakh. But that was not accepted by the officials. Auction was held again two weeks later, but there was no response again. District Nazir Mahinder said the old contractor had been asked to pay up Rs 8,000 a day as the charges to the DC office till the time there was a re-auction. He said the next auction was due on May 3 for which the conditions were same so far, just that the reserve price will be lowered in view of contract which will be limited for 11 months. |
