Feeling humiliated over her mother slapping her in front of her teachers for bunking classes, a 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in her school this afternoon, the police said. The girl has been identified as Mansi Pawar, daughter of an MCD sweeper.

The police said that the school authorities told them that Mansi had not been attending classes for the last one week. Today, when she came to school, she failed to present a leave application.

"Dissatisfied with her excuses, Mansi's class teacher called her mother to the school and informed her about her week-long absence," said a police official.

"Shockingly, her mother lost temper when she came to know that her daughter was not attending school. She scolded and slapped Mansi in front her teachers and classmates and returned home. It appears that Mansi decided to end her life because she could not bear the insult of being scolded in front of her teachers and classmates, said the official.

"Around 2.30 pm, when a security guard went to lock the classrooms, he saw Mansi hanging with a ceiling fan. He immediately informed the school authorities who called the police. She had hanged herself with a scrap bandage around her neck. She was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where she was declared brought dead," the official added.

The police is investigating to find out whether her suicide was a pre-meditated action. "If it was not pre-planned, how she got hold of scrap bandage to hang self," the official added.

New Delhi, April 27
Breaking away from the conventional classroom teaching style, Delhi University (DU) has decided to experiment with never-before introduced courses and teaching methodology from the coming academic session.

From the 2012 academic session, DU will offer BTech in humanities, the first four-year undergraduate course of the university. What makes the course interesting is that it will give the students the option to select their subjects and attend classes in different colleges.

"The students of the course will have the liberty to decide what they wish to study. No separate infrastructure will be needed for the course, which will have 20 seats. The students will have mentors and the programme will involve innovative projects and practical exercises. If a student wants to attend one semester at Ramjas and another at SRCC, it will be possible," said DU vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh.

The course will pave way for the ultimate plan of the university to introduce four-year undergraduate courses in 2013.

"The proposals for both, the BTech course and other four-year undergraduate courses, are yet to be put through the academic and executive councils," Singh Added.

Under the other four-year undergraduate courses to be introduced in 2013, the students will have exit options at the end of the second, third, and fourth years.

"The students who wish to exit the course at the end of the second year will be awarded an associate degree. Arrangements for their placements will also be made. Talks are on with government agencies regarding this. Those who exit the course at the end of the third year will get a bachelor's degree, while those who complete four years will get an honours degree. The course will have scope for research and project works which will be streamlined from the first year itself," added Singh.

"Students who exit the course before four years will have an option of coming back over a span of 10 years and completing the course. Also, students who wish to work while studying will have an option of migrating to the School of Open Learning for a couple of semesters. The mentors will guide the students about their options," added PRO of the vice chancellor Vivek Suneja.

Another interesting characteristic of the four-year courses will be that unlike the present arrangement, the students opting for sports, ECA activities, NCC, NSS will be given credits for attending practice sessions and get exemption from a couple of academic credits," Singh said.
