New Delhi, March 26
Today being the last day of filing nominations for contesting in the upcoming municipal elections, Election Commission (EC) offices were thronged by hundreds of candidates causing traffic jams at some places in the city. The two major rivals in the municipal elections, the BJP and the Congress, also filed their nominations today on all 272 seats.

Delhi State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta said that over 99.62 lakh voters were eligible to cast their votes at 12,000 polling stations spread across 2,700 buildings to elect 272 councillors.

It was only yesterday that the final lists of candidates by these two parties were announced, leading to agitation by those who missed the ticket. The disappointed contenders gave vent to their anger. One such candidate, Javed, who was aspiring ticket from Hauz Rani raised slogans against the area MLA and Minister of State for Social Welfare Minister Kiran Walia.

According to Javed, not only Walia, but MP Ajay Maken had also promised him the ticket. "There are 60 per cent Muslims in the Hauz Rani ward. I was promised ticket by Maken as well as Walia. They have betrayed us and we will see that they are defeated in their next election," said Javed adding that he will contest as an independent.

Other disappointed candidates and women who failed to bag the tickets also made a hue and cry. There are at least 12 wards where the men have managed tickets for their wives or the women have been replaced with husbands.

In the BJP, at least 14 sitting councillors have been denied the ticket.

The other prominent parties that are contesting the MCD elections include Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party, Indian National Lok Dal and Nationalist Congress Party. Hundreds of independent candidates are also in the fray.

Stating that April 15 will be a public holiday, Mehta said that polling would be held from 8 am to 5 pm where electronic voting machines (EVMs) would be used in all the polling stations. Counting would take place on April 17.

Women researchers protest hostel rules
Asked to vacate by March 31

New Delhi, March 26
Residents of the University Women Hostel at Delhi University have once again taken to streets against extension being denied to research scholars. Four girls, all pursuing research at the university and backed by strong recommendations from their respective departments for an extension at the university hostel, have been asked to vacate the hostel by March 31. Several more girls are likely to be asked to leave after the first week of April.

"Until now, if the research students had strong recommendations from their departments, they were always granted extension. In several cases, the extension was given up to six months, depending upon what the research demands. These girls have been verbally asked by the authorities to vacate the hostel after a list was made public with their names. They have been very active in the struggle against the hostel authorities and hence are being wrongly targeted," said Maya John, one of the PhD scholars and a hostel resident.

Today, in protest against the issue, hostel residents took out a rally through the North Campus area aimed at highlighting how women researchers were being denied extension of stay in the hostel.

Apart from flooding the dean of colleges' office with letters of appeal, the students have decided to take help of DU faculty members to check such 'authoritarian' practices.

The students also met the joint proctor today and handed over him a written charter of their demands.

"They have been assured that their grievances will be looked into," said a senior official at the proctor's office. However, students are tense and demand a quick review of the problem.

"The vice-chancellor has asked us to have faith in the system. But with the eviction notice out already, we are quite upset.

“It appears as if this move is an effort to stymie the ongoing struggle of the women residents against conservative hostel rules by the managing committee," added Maya John.
