Five booked:
The police has booked five persons in a dowry case. The complaint was lodged by a Kanwaljit Kaur’s father, who claimed that her daughter was harrassed by her husband Deedar Singh. The police after investigating the matter filed a case against the accused under section 406 IPC. 

Ferozepur
Elected:
Dr Naresh Khanna and Rajesh Malhotra were unanimously elected as president and vice-president, respectively, of the Lions Club, Ferozepur City. Dr RL Taneja, chairman of the nomination committee, said Dr Avtar Singh has been elected as general secretary. Dr Khanna said he would make the best of efforts to ensure that the club reaches out to the needy and underprivileged section of society. 

Lalru
One dies:
One person was killed in road accident near Lalru today when a truck rammed into a trolley near Sarsini village on Ambala-Chandigarh national highway. The police said Kulbeer Singh, a resident of Sadhapur village, fell from the tractor.— OC

National conference held:
A two-day national conference on “Recent Innovations in Engineering and Technology” concluded at Galaxy Global Group of Institutions, Dinarpur, recently. Dr SP Singh, Professor Emeritus, Kurukshetra University, who was also the chief guest on the occasion, congratulated the organisers for organising the event. More than 170 papers were presented during the conference. 

22 get postgraduate degrees: Education Minister Geeta Bhukkal has urged students to prove their merit through the medium of education and keep themselves updated to become good citizens. She said 2012 had been declared as the ‘Youth Year’, adding that youths should work hard and try to keep pace with the growing world of academics and technology. She was addressing the students of Government College, Naraingarh, recently. The minister awarded postgraduate degrees to 22 students and undergraduate degrees to 205 students in arts, commerce and science faculties.

Competition organised: The Guru Nanak Institute of Management (GNIM), Mullana, organised a GD competition for its students recently. Dr Sachin Chawla, dean, GNI Group, and Dr Ajit Kumar Bansal, principal, GNIM, were the guests on the occasion. In the screening round, 60 students of MBA participated, who were divided into six groups. As many as 12 candidates were chosen for the grand finale. Manisha Chauhan was declared the winner of the competition, while Mohammed Imran and Pooja stood second and third, respectively.

Fatehabad
Sethi is IMA chief:
Dr Sunil Sethi was on Sunday elected president of the local chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Tohana in Fatehabad for the second consecutive year. Dr Parveen Arora, Dr Mohit Gupta, Dr Vivek Kareer and Dr Vijay Bhatia were elected vice-president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer, respectively. Dr Rajan Gupta was elected president of the IMA.

Seminar on breast cancer:
SD (PG) College organised a seminar on breast cancer in order to generate awareness about the disease here recently. The seminar was conducted by Bittu Safeena Sandhu, founder of the Rani Breast Cancer Trust. Sandhu enumerated the causes, prevention and cure of the disease. She advised women above 40 years to get regular check-ups done for the early detection of the disease.

Opium seized:
The police has arrested a drug trafficker with 2.25 kg of opium near Shahpur Begu village in Sirsa. Jaiveer Singh of Darba Kalan was carrying the contraband in his car, when a police team stopped him.

Annual convocation function:
As many as 1,538 students received degrees at the annual convocation function of DAV College for Girls, Yamunanagar. Padma Shree Dr SK Sama, vice-president, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, and trustee and executive adviser, Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society, was the guest of honour on the occasion.

3 killed, 1 injured in road mishap:
Three persons were killed on the spot and one person was injured when the tipper in which they were travelling turned turtle at Kelam in Kulgam district, the police said. The dead have been identified as Javid Ahmad Shan, Jabbar Dar and Adil Ahmad Shan, all residents of Kelam.
The injured has been identified as Muzaffar Ahmad Sheikh. Sheikh was shifted to Sub-district Hospital, Anantnag, and was later referred to Bone and Joint Hospital, Srinagar.

Labourer burnt to death: A labourer Topan Dass from West Bengal was charred to death when a fire broke out in the labour shed of a plywood factory at Gowharpora in Budgam district on Sunday night, the police said. In another incident, fire broke out in a residential house at Path-Seer, Sopore, damaging it. However, no loss of life or injury was reported in the incident. Two more structures were damaged in separate fire incidents in Kulgam and Baramulla districts.

Office timings changed: Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Asgar Hassan Samoon on Monday ordered that the working hours of all the government offices and institutions within the Srinagar Municipal Corporation limits would be from 10 am to 4 pm from April 1 and will remain effective upto October 31, an official spokesman said. However, educational institutes have been excluded from the order. All Deputy Commissioners, Head of Departments, offices and institutions have been ordered to strictly adhere to the revised office timings.

10 nabbed for buying girl: The Bageshwar police has arrested 10 persons for taking away a girl from a local village on the pretext of her marriage. The police said the girl from the Loharkhet area of the district had been bought for Rs 14,000 by the culprits and they were taking her away to Ghaziabad in UP. A women's organisation in Bageshwar has said several women had been taken out of the district last year in the name of solemnising their marriage, but the police could not trace whether they actually got married or were sold by the agents who were coming to the district to buy poor girls. “All culprits, arrested by the police, have been charged under the human trafficking laws and sent to jail,” said BL Vishwa Karma, in charge of police station of Bageshwar.

2 held with snow leopard skin: An SSB patrolling team has arrested two Pithoragarh youths with a skin of a snow leopard and some banned drugs from the Indo Nepal border at Pangla near Dharchula. The skin of snow leopard, which is worth Rs 8 lakh in the international market, was being smuggled to Nepal by the youths from Pangla, according to SS officials.

Woman die in bike-truck collision: A woman riding pillion died while her husband driving a bike was seriously injured when a truck coming from the opposite side ran over the couple at Kashipur road at Rudrapur on Monday. The couple was on their way to Gadarpur town. The truck driver has been arrested after a chase by local youths. The husband has been admitted to hospital and the body of the deceased has been handed over to relatives after post-mortem.

Leave of distt officers cancelled: Keeping the Uttarakhand Assembly session scheduled to be held from March 27 to 29 in mind, the Almora District Magistrate has cancelled the leave of district-level officers and asked them to be ready to answer the queries from the assembly members during the session. “We have also asked the officers to keep their mobile phones on and remain at their landline phones to answer the queries from the respected members of the state Assembly", said DS Garbiyal, District Magistrate, Almora.

Tusker body found: The body of a tusker has been found by forest officials at Bastia range near Tanakpur forest on Monday. According to the forest officials, the tusker died after it fell from a height of 40 feet near a ridge. “Both ivories of the 25-year tusker have been taken in possession by the department and viscera of the animal has been sent to the animal research centre at Dehradun after post-mortem on the body of the animal," said Champawat DFO SP Singh.

Dharna against liquor shop on: The eight-day-long dharna against the liquor shop by local women at Pull Hindola town in Lohaghat sub-division of Champawat district continued on Monday as more women from nearby villages joined the protest. The women on Sunday held a meeting and warned the administration that if a wine shop was opened at Pull Hindola town, they would intensify their agitation. “Besides the women from local villages, women organisations from Haldwani are also participating in our agitation, which will continue till the assurances from the administration that no wine shop will be opened at the town this session is fulfilled," said Basanti Devi, convener of the agitation.
