Overcharging on at ISBT
Nikhil Bhardwaj

Jalandhar, February 25
When you have to shell out Rs 22 for a packet of chips with a maximum retail price of Rs 20 at the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in the city, it is clear that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the malpractice.

In the market, the MRP of burger is Rs 15, but at the bus stand, it shoots up by Rs 5 and is sold for Rs 20. Similarly, you have to pay Rs 22 for a chips packet which is available for Rs 20 in the market. A burger costs you Rs 20 instead of Rs 15 and a patty Rs 10, whereas it is available for Rs 8 in the market. Shopkeepers are also charging Rs 2 to Rs 5 more on a bottle of soft drink, juice and mineral water.

People visiting the ISBT have no other option to shell out extra bucks as shopkeepers misbehave when questioned about the MRP. And they don’t know where to file a complaint as the complaint number written on walls at every shop has been erased or defaced by shopkeepers to prevent the customers from complaining. Though all shops have displayed rate list, shopkeepers continue to overcharge.

When asked, one of the shopkeepers said: “This is the practice here. The rates have been fixed by the owner of the shop. You want to buy anything or not it is up to you.”

The complaint number was visible only at one shop. When a call was made on this phone number, the person concerned said: “After receiving the complaint, we will send it to the bus stand manager for further action,” he said, adding they receive a number of complaints against shop owners everyday.

“I have complained against shopkeepers a number of times on this number, but no action has been taken. They still continue overcharge,” Gaurav Sama, a daily commuter rued.

When contacted, manager of the company who has the contract of ISBT RK Sharma said notices would be sent to shopkeepers who would charge more than the MRP.
