Heroin worth  Rs 30 cr seized
: The BSF has seized six kg of heroin worth Rs 30 crore in the international market near the Zero Line in Hindumalkot, 31 km from here. MB Khan, Officiating DIG, said the BSF noticed the movement of two persons near the border and opened fire at the smugglers. The latter, however, managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness. A search operation launched later led to the recovery of the contraband.

Doctor gets 4-yr jail for taking bribe
: District and Sessions Judge Fateh Deep Singh on Saturday held a doctor, Parveen Mahendru, guilty of accepting Rs 1,500 bribe from a physically challenged person, Tarsem Singh of Lambwali village, for issuing him a medical certificate and awarded him four years of rigorous imprisonment along with Rs 10,000 fine.

22 students fall sick:
22 students, including 8 girls from Govt High School Bhundri, near Sidhwa Bet, fell sick after consuming an inedible fruit "Ratanjot" yesterday. The children were playing outside the school when they consumed the ‘fruit’. They were admitted to the civil hospital, Sidhwan Bet. 18 students have been discharged while 4 are still under treatment.

Underweight gas cylinders seized
: The Food and Civil Supplies Department has begun a special drive to check the tampering of cooking gas cylinders by distribution agencies following several complaints by the residents. The department has recovered two gas cylinders of Indane belonging to Hargobind Gas Agency, which were found underweight. District Food and Civil Supplies Controller Dr Sona Thind said Munna Lal, the agency's delivery man, had been arrested. However, no legal action was taken against the agency owner, a retired district welfare officer, whose son was a high-ranking official in the Vigilance Bureau.

Mishap averted: A tragedy was averted near Bariwala town in the district on Saturday when the alert driver of a moving train stopped it a few metres ahead of a railway crossing where the gateman allegedly failed to close the gates to stop other vehicles. At 1:30 pm when the DMU train 74983, on way to Fazilka from Kotkapura, reached near crossing number 13 on the Sarai Naga-Marar Kalan road, the gates of the crossing were found open and on seeing the vehicles moving on railway tracks, the driver immediately applied brakes. Daljeet Singh, senior engineer of Railways, said, “The alertness of the train driver averted a tragedy. Gateman Khem Chand has been suspended.”

: In a gang war between two rival factions, a youth Gurvinder Singh, alias Lakhi, was shot dead allegedly by four persons near Sherpur Bus Stand on Thursday night. A case has been registered against Gurmeet Singh Kala, Ajaib Khan, Iqbal Singh and Lakha.

Four killed: Four persons died in separate road accidents on Friday night. All victims died on the spot. Premwati (70) was crushed to death when a speeding tractor ran over her. In another incident, Vijay Arora travelling on a car was hit by a troller near a toll plaza in Sarai Khwaja, which led to his death. In third incident, two youths, Akash (19) and Javed Ali (18), died after their motorcycles were being hit by tractors at the Lala Lajpat Rai Chowk and the Sohna Road, respectively.

Kurukshetra
Two held: Two persons have been arrested for stealing an LPG cylinder from Sannihit Srovar here. The stolen LPG cylinder has been recovered from their possession. The arrested persons have been identified as Ashok Kumar of Kurukshetra and Ranjeet of Delhi.

Three-year-old crushed to death
: A three-year-old girl was crushed to death under a car turning the celebrations of a marriage party into grief at Chautala village in the district on Friday night. The girl was standing behind a stationary car, when the car driver moved the vehicle backwards killing the child on the spot.

Girl killed: Aarti (23) of Sersa village died on the spot and her husband, Arvind, was injured seriously when their motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck near Pitampura turn on the GT Road on Saturday. However, it was lucky escape for their 2-year-old son who did not receive any injury in the accident. The victims were returning to their village on a motorcycle after completing some work at Rai. The police has registered a case against the truck driver who left the vehicle and escaped from the spot after the accident. The police has also taken possession of the truck.

Woman dead: Meena Kumari (30) committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at her in-law’s house at Guhana village on Friday night. The police reached on the spot and brought her body for a post-mortem examination here in the Civil Hospital. A case has been registered under Section 174 of the IPC.

SDM’s official vehicle stolen from Hanuman temple:
A thief stole an official vehicle of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) at Bhikyasain in Almora district. Manoj Sharma of Bambagher village, who is employed as the driver of the SDM, had taken the vehicle to his native village while the SDM was out of station. The vehicle was lifted from the Hanuman temple in the village. The driver informed the police immediately after detecting the theft. The efforts are on to trace the stolen vehicle.

Residents resent supply of dirty water: Residents of Shivaji Colony and its adjoining areas are agitated over the supply of dirty water to their houses. The residents claim that they are getting sewer water in their taps. They have threatened to launch an agitation at the office of the Jal Sansthan if steps are not taken immediate to supply clean water to them. They have pointed out that despite having given written complaints, the officials have not even bothered to locate the fault in the supply line.

Spurious khoya seized: The authorities in Almora have confiscated 1.75 quintal of spurious khoya and 15 kg of adulterated cottage cheese during a check, which was carried out near Lodhia. It is learnt that the spurious milk products were being brought to Almora from Haldwani in two vehicles. The check was carried out by a team comprising officials of the local administration, Health and the Police Departments.

Juvenile delinquents flee: Three inmates of a juvenile home in Almora have fled. It is learnt that three boys fled when the caretaker of the home had gone to answer the call of nature. They locked him inside and fled the premises in the Pandeykhola area. The boys have been identified as Neeraj Lekhak of Nirada and Harish Sharma of Link Road in Pithoragarh and Dinesh of Mahendra Nagar district of Nepal.

Motorcyclist run over by truck, killed: A motorcyclist was killed when he was run over by a truck in the Kashipur area of Udham Singh Nagar district. The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Harvinder Singh of Gangapur village. He was crushed to death near the Dhela Pul area while he was returning after dropping his father at the local bus station.
