Hostel wall issue resolved
Jalandhar, February 24 A decision in this regard came from the residents’ side following two separate meetings, which took place late last evening. Residents agreed that the security of the girls is a foremost concern, hence the wall should be erected. While one meeting was chaired by MC Commissioner BS Dhaliwal with residents of Redisun Enclave and Friends Colony, the other meeting was held between the DAV College authorities and a police party, headed by ADCP (Headquarters) Navjot Singh Mahal. It was also decided in the meeting that a separate committee, comprising officials of the departments involved in the DAV Canal Road land, namely irrigation, forest and municipal corporation, and the DAV College authorities should find out the actual owner of the land and the amount of encroachment made by the college authorities. Seven days have been given to finalise the setting up of the committee. Residents of Redisun Enclave and Friends Colony also held a press conference, in which they supported the decision of the meetings held yesterday. “Keeping in mind the security of the girls, we have agreed to the reconstruction of the wall for the time being. But, we also expect that the police authorities and the Municipal Corporation would soon find out the facts pertaining to the land encroached by the DAV college authorities,” said Rajinder Rishi, a resident. Another resident, Rajeev Sethi, said as the one-way road was adjoining the canal, it had turned accident-prone and a major cause of concern for them. “Two years back, we had initiated to find the owner of the land. And in case justice is not done, we will be forced to take a legal course in the coming days,” he added. Meanwhile, the reconstruction of the wall came as a much relief to the hostel girls and the college staff members. The college staff also thanked the residents, police and municipal corporation authorities for solving the issue amicably. |
Sloppy construction mars administrative complex
Jalandhar, February 24 Ever since as many as dozen odd buildings have come up on the nearly 600 kanal site with negligible open spaces and parking area left anywhere. One of the three parking lots for visitors to the complex is already outside along the road with no other space left anywhere. The construction seems to have been done in a completely unplanned manner with no futuristic approach. The complex houses a four-storeyed main building at the centre with the office of the Deputy Commissioner on the ground floor. The left side of the complex is cluttered with offices of the lawyers, notaries and stamp vendors. The office of the ADC (Development) is in a separate building at the back of the main office. There is a long storeroom building on the right side of it, after which comes the building housing the office of the Commissioner of Police. In front of the building is another one housing the office of the Deputy Statistical Adviser and District Planning Committee Chairman. Just along is another building meant for the office of small saving schemes. On the other side of the office of the Commissioner of Police are four-five “hutments” wherein there are offices of the accounts branch and election office. On the right side of it is the office of treasury branch. A few buildings have come up just recently in the complex. The Suvidha Centre came about three years back. A three-storeyed building meant to house judicial records was constructed about five months back, but the office is yet to shift there from its current location at the old DC office on the GT Road. The construction of the office of the Social Welfare Department in the shape of Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar Complex, too, got over about a month back. |
Bus company director arrested in provident fund scam
Jalandhar, February 24 His three brothers, who are also directors of the company, are still at large. They are Ramesh Chand, Om Parkash and Satpal Singh. They are said to have flown to the USA to escape payment of the EPF and legal proceedings. The chairman of the company, Balwinder Singh, is also evading arrest. Vishawajit Sagar, Regional Provident Fund Commissioner, said the accused had not been depositing the EPF of 96 employees and the defaulting amount in the period of 1998 to 2005 stood at Rs 48.38 lakhs. After penalty and interest till date, the due amount now stood at Rs 82.58 lakh. “We have also impounded eight buses of the company and already sold three of them. The remaining five buses are also put on sale,” Sagar said, adding that even after selling the eight buses, the EPFO would not able to recover even Rs 10 lakh. The organisation served scores of show cause notices on them and finally quasi-judicial proceedings were initiated against them, he said, revealing that the defaulting company also went non-functional in 2005 and the accused avoided receiving the show cause notices and arrest warrants. Paramjit Singh was engaged as a transport manager at some private school in Nurmahal. Today, following a tip-off, he was arrested and sent to the prison, he said. With the help of the police, raids are being conducted to nab the remaining accused, he said. |

Open garbage dumps become eyesores
Jalandhar, February 24 Since there are no covered containers where the garbage can be piled up till it gets lifted by Municipal Corporation (MC) vehicles, it gets spread over a long stretch of land adding to the woes of the passersby. The stench emanating from the dump becomes unbearable if the MC vehicle gets late to pick the garbage in some areas. A windy or a rainy day further adds to the nuisance. Some garbage dumps have come up at the sites which are more commonly accessed by the public. There is a dump right in front of the gates of the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Garha Road. There also is one just at the corner of the bus stand alongside one of the gates. “What impression would any visitor get about the city as soon as he alights from the bus and comes out from this gate?” quipped a local resident, Charanjit Singh. In Model House, one side of a public park is used as a dump with no boundary ahead of it to segregate this section. Another dump in a park in front of TV centre on Mahavir Marg, too, is a big nuisance for residents, who have complained about it to the authorities many times. Residents of Post and Telegraph Colony, too, are a harassed lot for there is a dump right at the entrance of their main gate. Shopkeepers of Dilkusha Market, too, have much problem because of a dumping site at one of the entry point via the old GT Road at Plaza Chowk. A dump in front of Khalsa School and another near cremation ground of the Housing Board area, too, have remained a nuisance. Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Bhatia said he hoped that the things would fall in line once the agreement signed between a private company and the MC on the door-to-door collection of garbage and its treatment at a plant in Pholariwal got implemented. Bhatia added, “The company will hire not just trucks, but also small pick-up vehicles, which will collect garbage from smaller carts going at each doorstep. The safai karamcharis will then have to refrain from unloading carts at dump sites, which till date is a common practice. Since the garbage will be lifted twice a day, the problem will be completely resolved.” |

They were told that each constituency would have 14 rounds of counting. District Election Officer Priyank Bharti said the next rehearsal for the purpose would be held on March 4. |
Chief Wildlife Warden asked to come to chained monkey’s rescue
Jalandhar, February 24 The monkey is in illegal captivity of some person and has been seen chained near gate No 1 of a private university on the GT Road at Chaheru village in Phagwara. Dr Jain noticed the animal during his visit to the university and informed the district forest officials, besides Honorary Wildlife Warden, Jalandhar, about it, but failed to get the animal released from the illegal captivity. Talking to The Tribune, Dr Jain revealed that the animal was forced to live on a wall and there was hardly any space for the animal to move around. Dr Jain said he had also received information that a pair of monkey had also been chained on the premises of an auto-washing station right in front of the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
