DAV College Hostel wall row deepens
Jalandhar, February 23 The college authorities decided to move court after a meeting held at the Police Commissioner's office remained inconclusive. The meeting was attended by ADCP-I RK Sharma, ACP Ashwini Kumar, ADCP (Headquarters) Navjot Mahal, MC officials and DAV College principal Dr BB Sharma and staff members. Talking to Jalandhar Tribune ADCP-I R.K. Sharma said: "During the meeting, we convinced the DAV College staff to maintain law and order and also asked the college authorities to advise students to refrain from protests." The college authorities claimed that they had gone for the meeting hoping that the matter would be resolved, but they ended up listening to one official after the other. "We kept waiting for Commissioner Gaurav Yadav to come and address our problem. Now, we have decided to move court," said a staff member of DAV College. Earlier, high drama was witnessed at the site when the college authorities started reconstructing the wall at around 7.30 am. Heavy police posse remained at the site and the road was cordoned off. As soon as the construction of wall began, residents of the adjoining colonies along with Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT) chairman Baljeet Singh Neelamahal's brother Kamaljit Gandhi, who is a MC councillor, reached the spot to stop the construction work. The college authorities said they decided to reconstruct the wall as it involved security of girls. "Even MC officials had accepted that they should not have demolished the wall owing to security issues," said a college staff member. Meanwhile, the college authorities flayed the police for its 'failure' in dealing with the case and said that they too were working under the pressure of the land mafia governed by political leaders. The MC had on February demolished the wall, claiming that the college had encroached upon the land of the Irrigation Department. The college staff, however, claimed that officials came without any information and demolished the wall at the behest of a political leader, allegedly supporting land mafia in the area. On Wednesday, students and staff of DAV College boycotted classes and blocked traffic on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway for nearly two hours in protest against the MC's move to demolish the girls' hostel wall. |
MC assesses its financial health
Jalandhar, February 23 Commissioner BS Dhaliwal, Additional Commissioner VK Gupta and Joint Commissioner DP Bhardwaj were busy holding budget discussions with the staff of various branches and doing spadework for formulating the agenda for the same. While Dhaliwal held a meeting with officials of the building branch asking them to bring in more income through composition fee, Bhardwaj called a meeting with officials of the fire brigade, O&M and B&R wings asking them of various proposals for expenditure to be put in the agenda of the budget meeting likely to be held after March 9. The requirements proposed by the B&R branch included construction of more public toilets, night shelters, sports hub at Burlton Park and the Chandan Nagar railway underbridge. Interestingly, it will be for the third time that the budget allocation for sports hub would be made in the annual budget meeting this year even as the construction work is yet to start. Officials of the fire brigade proposed purchase of new fire equipment, including motorcycles and hydraulic ladders. The inputs of budgetary details culled so far indicate that there is a huge gap of income and expenditure in the O&M cell of the MC. This branch which has collected Rs 15.3 crore so far against a target of Rs 25 crore, has an annual committed expenditure which is more than double the amount recovered. An whooping expenditure of Rs 35.25 crore in terms of power bills for streetlight points, sewage disposal charges levied by the Punjab Water Supply and Sewage Board and maintenance of streetlights, tubewells and sewage system is being proposed by the department for the coming financial year. SE (O&M) PS Jaggi said the target of collection of Rs 25 crore on account of water and sewerage bills could not be achieved this year because of elections and orders from court on levying old rates. “We should be able to recover at least Rs 18 crore this year and make it to Rs 22 crore next year,” he proposed. |
MC health institutions not in pink of health
Jalandhar, February 23
The 10 ayurvedic dispensaries under the MC have only five doctors. All five doctors are expected to attend patients at two dispensaries every day. The doctor posted at Mithu Basti dispensary also visits the one at Basti Sheikh. The doctor at Abadpura dispensary also goes to the one at Bhargo Camp. Similarly, the doctor posted at Santokhpura also attends to patients at Preet Nagar dispensary. Interestingly, some of the dispensaries like that in Chogitti are managed by a pharmacist with no visiting doctors at all. The doctors rue that they are now also expected to visit the night shelters to check the health of the homeless and destitute putting up there. The staff, however, claims that medicines and other required provisions were coming well in time. Joint Commissioner DP Bhardwaj said the hospital was closed as there was no patient there. He added that the shortage of doctors, of course, was there but there was no plan for any recruitment in the near future. |

Demarcation of defence land expedited in cantonment area
Jalandhar, February 23 Although no time frame has been set by the MoD to complete the process, sources claimed the Army has started erecting fences and putting up warning boards stating “trespassers will be punished”. The demarcation and fencing of the land is being done at places in and around the Vajra Corps, which is surrounded by a number of sub-urban and rural belts. Since its establishment during the British Raj, the cantonment area has not been fenced resulting in encroachments. Recently, the Army set up cemented barricades at the old site of the taxi stand situated on the Dasehra Ground road towards the Military Hospital while they also took over the possession of a residence, which was constructed on the defence land in Birring village on the outskirts of cantonment. The Army authorities also constructed a wall in front of houses in Dhina village. Defence spokesman Naresh Vig said the MoD has expedited the process of acquisition, hiring, requisitioning of immovable properties for defence purposes. “The Army is maintaining the land records as regards to the occupancy, proprietary and other rights of the MoD on defence lands,” he added. |
