Most pvt schools flout RTE norms
Ludhiana, February 23
Most of the private schools in Ludhiana district have not applied to Punjab School Education Board for recognition under the RTE Act. Of the 1064 private schools, only about 400 have submitted the application forms. It is now mandatory for every private school to provide details of the school to the education department and get recognition under the RTE. The last date of submission of the details was January 12.

Charred body found in garbage dump
Ludhiana, February 23
Panic spread in the Transport Nagar area after a badly charred body was found in a garbage dump here today. The incident came to light this morning when a safai karamchari spotted the body of a man and raised the alarm.
‘Mobile’ transformers to prevent thefts

Getting no relief from the increasing incidents of transformer thefts, farmers of several villages near Jagraon have devised a new plan to deal with the problem. They have removed the transformers from electricity poles and installed them on their tractor trailers or bullock carts to protect them from the thieves.

Phulkari suits stitched in quintessential Patialvi style have become a style statement for Punjabi NRIs. Since the demand for the age-old traditional embroidery has increased among this specific group, the art has also gone hi-tech. Many export houses and boutiques now use computer designs and colours to “stitch” a pattern on suits, giving a tough time to the artisans.

Hindu exhibitors want to return to their motherland
Ludhiana, February 23
Living across the border, these two brothers always yearn to return back to their motherland and exhibitions and expos held between the two countries provide them with an opportunity to come back to their land. Brother duo Dungro Mal and Banke Das are the lone Hindu exhibitors from Pakistan at the Indo-Pak expo being held in the city.

Bike expo begins today

The city will be holding a three-day trade show, Bike Expo, 2012, from February 24. All major bicycle brands, including Hero, Atlas and Avon, will be participating in the expo. The companies are expected to launch their new models during the event.

3 booked gangrape
Ludhiana, February 23
Three persons were booked for raping a woman of Daba road. The victim, a resident of Daba Colony, said Surinder Singh, Kamal and Happy, all residents of Shimlapuri, had raped her in January, this year.
