10 hurt in clash over land dispute
Jalandhar, February 11 A large posse of police personnel have been deployed in the village following the clash. Earlier too, in December and a few days ago, Baldev Singh, who claims to have the legal possession of the land, had tried to get it land vacated with the interference of the police. Since then, a temporary police post was set up as a precautionary measure at the disputed spot. "Around 40 armed assailants arrived and threatened us to vacate the land. The assailants attacked the Dalits, including women and elderly, in the present of police. They damaged our tents and other equipment" Ghughshore, district secretary of the Pendu Mazdur Union said. The Dalits had set up a religious structure and a 'nishan sahib' to lay claim on the 10-acre disputed land. Ghugshore said miscreants damaged the temple and the 'nishan sahib'. In retaliation, villagers forced the assailants to flee from the spot. They also set afire a motorcycle and a scooter of assailants. The Dalit community members alleged that Baldev Singh had been claiming to have the legal possession of land and had sold it off to a property dealer. However, the Dalits were up in arms against the alleged sale of the land. "We have even urged the Deputy Commissioner to allot the land to landless labourers who had been using it since long," Ghugshore said. The state SC Commission had ordered an inquiry into the alleged sale of land and the Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner had been asked to submit a report. The police had registered a case under Sections 307, 323, 324, 295, 148, 149 and 506 of the IPC and relevant sections of the SC/ST Act against the assailants. |
Heart-shaped cushions, soft toys hot this Valentine's Day
Jalandhar, February 11 The markets wear a hearty, soft, red and pink look as shop entrances are decorated with extravagant buntings, toys and V-Day reminders. Gift outlets are doing brisk business and some garment and multipurpose stores have also hopped onto the Valentine's Day bandwagon to earn big bucks. Speaking about the Valentine's trend, Gurdeeep Singh from Hallmark's Gallery says: "The market is full of V-Day gifts and shoppers have started pouring in. As V-day finally comes, there will be a substantial rush in the market." So what's the buzz this Valentine's? There is a plethora of new gifts and lovey-dovey items across the market. From stuffed toys to red hot heart cushions and digital valentine accessories, not to forget a huge range of heart themed jewellery, the market is teeming with a lot of options for couples in love. There are dancing, musical, singing, I love you-spouting teddy bears, digital fans that have chirpy I love yous running right across them and for the relatively solemn types, there are messages in bottles and sleek red couple sculptures. Heart-shaped chocolates are also a must-keep at any shop that has V-Day riding on its mind. Jaspreet Gill, a buyer at a local gift outlet, says: "I am looking for something that I would send to my husband. He's in England, so I would go in for greetings and paper gifts. Though I will also be buying another gift and saving it for later this year when we meet." Shefali and Gurpreet, students at a local institute, say: "One of us have our birthday today. So we are shopping both for Valentine's and the upcoming party. We may buy a few beautiful things and keep a few gifts to please ourselves this Valentine's." Sumit, a BBA II student, has rather elfish approach about V-Day. "I bought a gift for my first girlfriend last year. Now she has gone to the UK, so I am buying one for her sister. I will by her something expensive to make her happy. There might be someone else next year." His friend, however, wants to keep it basic. "I am here for Sumit. For me, it's going to be a simple token of love for my wife to celebrate the day together." |

Real estate bubble fizzles out
Jalandhar, February 11 Barring one or two malls, owners of all other shopping centres in the city are not getting clients. Vacant malls with boards displaying "space available, please contact" or "shops on rent" are a common sight. Ansal Plaza, which perhaps was one of the first shopping malls in the city, is almost on the verge of a closure. Even as the mall is situated on the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway, only one eating joint has tagged along while other brands, including Duke, Barista, Candy Treats have closed their outlets some months ago. Several other malls and commercial building in the city on the GT Road, Cool Road, Nakodar Road or near Jyoti Chowk, too, are getting buyers or tenants for the ground floor. Rajan Chopra, a realtor, said businessmen were adopting wait and watch policy ahead of poll result. "They are waiting for the election results and the policies of the new government," he added. He said as the banks had increased the rate on fixed deposits to 10.5 per cent, people prefer depositing their money there. Almost all malls in the city witnessed rush for just a few months. "Earlier, Ansal used to draw much crowd. It was followed by Spencers, Reliance and Viva Collage. People drift to a better place. People do actual shopping only during sale and most prefer window shopping," said Manisha, a housewife and a frequent shopper, adding that she still preferred to shop at the good old market areas in Model Town and Rainak Bazaar. Amardip Samra, a builder, said he, too, had been getting vibes that people were waiting for the new government to take charge. They are expecting some policy changes. Amarjot Singh, a property dealer, said the slowdown was not only due to Assembly elections. "The main problem is that there has been more supply than the demand. Buyers or tenants have more options now with the opening of new malls," he said. |
Violence against teachers has academicians worried
Jalandhar, February 11 Even as there are sporadic incidents of clashes among students on or outside the campuses, the administrations of these institutions are increasingly becoming wary of the problem and are planning ways out to help avert any untoward incident. While almost all campuses, including Lyallpur Khalsa College and Lovely Professional University, have installed CCTV cameras to monitor students' activities, many have also started improved versions of skill development or moral education classes for inculcating values and ensuring better teacher-taught relations. The issue remained a topic of discussion in academic circles. Teachers tried to analyse the reports that said that the accused student perhaps suffered from some personality disorder, remained quiet and withdrawn. "Such cases are more worrying as even the peers fail to realise as to what kind of thought process the child is going through," they said. Seema Handa, principal, Eklavya School, says: "Teachers need to be more empathetic towards students and sense their problems much before any unmanageable situation arises. Even as success rate cannot be cent per cent, the teacher needs to undergo a lot of analytical thinking to resolve issues of growing stress management among children." Psychiatrist Pallavi Khanna blames it on poor upbringing of children in small families by the parents. "Parents need to help children in controlling their impulses, postponing crave for immediate gratification, increasing tolerance levels and accepting mistakes. The biggest blunder that the parents do is giving too much too soon for which the society has to bear the brunt." |
