Abducted girl rescued after chase
New Delhi, July 24 The incident was reported around 3.30 am from near Ghitorni Metro station in the Fatehpur Beri area of south Delhi. According to the police, victim Vinita Sharma (name changed) and her colleague Rashmi (name changed) reside in Badarpur and work at Sahara Mall in Gurgaon. "Yesterday, the girls had an argument with five boys at the mall. After the arguments some relatives of the girls visited them at the mall. After the relatives left around 2 am, the girls hired a cab to go home. But when they crossed the Ghitorni Metro station, a white-coloured Scorpio car with dark glasses and no number plate intercepted their cab and forced them to stop. As soon as the cab stopped, the same five boys dragged Vinita into their Scorpio car," said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (South). He added when the other girls resisted, she was beaten and threatened of dire consequences. According to the police, the boys also snatched the mobile phones of the girls and the key of the cab to prevent them from informing the police. However, luckily, cab driver Amit had a mobile phone and after the boys left, he made a PCR call. Soon, the policemen at the Aaya Nagar police picket and the patrolling vehicles in the Fatehpur Beri area were alerted. After abducting the girl, the boys took the Scorpio towards Andheria Mode and then towards the Aaya Nagar to reach Faridabad quickly. However, when they reached the Aaya Nagar picket, they saw that vehicles were being checked, so they took a U-turn on the wrong carriage way and sped away. They tried to reach the new highway connecting Gurgaon to Faridabad via Jaunapur. However, they were chased and intercepted before they could reach Jaunapur," said Sharma. In their attempt to escape, the boys entered an alley with a dead end. While three of the accused managed to flee, Kartar was caught near the car and another police party on motor cycle caught Pramod. "The victim was rescued unhurt," said Sharma. The other accused have been identified as Ravish Nagar, Deepak and Arun, all residents of Haryana. Kartar is resident of Faridabad and is a final year BSc student at a prestigious college there. "He along with his sister runs a play school in the name of Little Pride. The boys had gathered yesterday as Kartar had thrown a party t celebrate the purchase of the car," said Sharma. Pramod is a BBA student of the same college and resides in Faridabad. |
Drug peddling on the rise
New Delhi, July 24 "In the first six months this year, we have already registered 440 cases under various sections of the NDPS Act. This is a four-fold rise as compared to 106 cases during the same period in 2010," said a crime branch official, requesting anonymity. He added that more arrests only indicate that the police was doing its job well. According to the statistics of the crime branch, which is responsible for the arrest of at least half of these peddlers, Nigerian, South African, Nepali, Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals constitute 90 per cent of the foreign nationals arrested for drug peddling. "While Nigerians and South Africans are usually involved in costly cocaine peddling, people from the neighbouring countries usually deal in cheaper drugs like smack/heroin, opium and ganja," said the official. Around 100 foreign nationals have been arrested in the cases, he added. Not only is there an increase in the number of arrests and cases under the NDPS Act, the Delhi police has also seized larger quantities of narcotics as compared to last year. While 6 kg heroin was seized during the first six months last year, more than 24 kg has been seized this year. "Only 10 kg opium was seized last year in six months while over 50 kg has already been seized this year. The same is the case with cocaine, ephedrine and methaqalone," the official said. The interrogation of the accused has revealed the names of some high-profile people as the users of drugs. Usually, drugs are brought from Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal and all states near the borders. |
Snatching faked to steal
Rs 5 lakh
New Delhi, July 24 According to the police, the accused has been identified as Amit Saini. Saini was carrying his employer's Rs 5 lakh. He was supposed to deliver the money to his office accountant in Karol Bagh. According to Vivek Kishore, DCP (Central), the call regarding the snatching was received by the police around 1.45 pm from the Jhandewalan roundabout. "When a police team reached the spot, Saini said two boys on a motor cycle snatched from him a bag containing Rs 5 lakh," said Kishore. He added that Saini frequently changed his statements which created doubt. The police called Saini's employer Naresh Goyal on the spot. He also felt that something was fishy. "The area where, according to Saini, the snatching had taken place is under CCTV surveillance. When the police verified the CCTV footage, it saw that Saini had reached the spot without any bag," said Kishore. He was arrested on charges of giving false information and trying to misappropriate Rs 5 lakh. Saini disclosed that he had kept the cash with his friend Manoj Kumar in Gurgaon. He told the police that he tried to steal the money as he wanted to restart his cyber café business in which he had incurred losses in the past. The money has been recovered from the Gurgaon. Hailing from Rewari (Haryana), Saini has done BCom. |
DSIIDC to build knowledge park, manufacturing hub in Delhi
New Delhi, July 24 In a statement issued by the corporation, Chetan Sanghi, chairman-cum-managing director, DSIIDC, said the corporation would come up with some major projects in the next couple of years. "The DSIIDC will spend thousands of crores of rupees on several prestigious projects in the coming years," said Sanghi. To bring more investments and industries to Delhi, the DSIIDC has planned to develop a knowledge-based industrial park in Baprola at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore. A manufacturing hub to promote industrial development at Rani Khera will be started at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore. It will be spread over 154 acre approximately. He said the corporation would work on the public-private partnership (PPP) mode for the maintenance of four industrial estates at Bawana, Narela, Okhla and Patparganj. The DSIIDC has already signed a contract for the maintenance of Bawana and Narela estates for 15 years at a cost of Rs 30 crore per year. He said the corporation achieved highest-ever profit of Rs 108 crore during 2010-11 as against Rs 44 crore during 2009-10. Apart from that, Sanghi said the DSIIDC had decided to take over 28 industrial estates from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under the new Industrial Maintenance Law which would involve an infrastructure cost of Rs 1,300 crore in the next five years. |
Noida farmers set Aug 5 deadline
Noida, July 24 "On the promise of officers of the Authority, the panchayat has decided not to stop the construction work till August 5," said Veer Singh Yadav, a farmer. "Beside a hike in land compensation, our main demand is 5 per cent developed land, which has not yet been given by the Authority. We want land compensation at the rate of Rs 10,000 per square metre. The amount is negotiable, but we will not accept anything less than Rs 7,000 per square metre," said Yadav. Yesterday, villages near the expressway gave an ultimatum to the Authority on similar demands. Noida chairman and chief executive officer Balwinder Kumar said, "Builders' work is going on in two pockets. One is at Sector 74 and surrounding areas and the other along the expressway near Shahdara village. Farmers are protesting at these places. Their demand for 5 per cent developed land is justified and will be resolved within 10 days. However, their demand of a hike in land compensation will be forwarded to the state government." The district administration has deployed rapid action force to avert any violence at the sites of protest. This has been done in view of the ongoing construction activities of the builders. At various sites, the builders have completed construction of five to 10 floors. Presently, there is no court order to stay or quash the acquisition of land in Noida. Farmers, encouraged by the court order in case of Shahberi village, are protesting and holding panchayats, hoping that if they move court, they too would get a similar order. However, the situation in Noida Extension and Noida is entirely different. Unlike Noida Extension, in Noida, there was no change of land use from industrial to residential and the farmers had accepted the compensation after executing mutual agreements. Meanwhile, at Noida Extension, contractors, suppliers and labourers today held a protest. Around 300 workers of various contractors assembled at Noida Extension for the demonstration. The money of the contractors is also at stake in Noida Extension. "The buyers and contractors have been affected the most by the court order here. Builders have taken money from investors for the project and employed the contractors. But now, they have refused to pay the contractors, saying that the work has been halted," said Yash Gupta, a union representative. Every contractor has dues worth several crores of rupees with the builders, he added. At Greater Noida, farmers of Roza Yakubpur held a havan. "We are holding the havan so that the Authority officers get wisdom and they do not cheat innocent farmers in future," said a farmer. "We also want that the investors too should get justice," said another farmer. "We are also praying for our victory on July 26 when the court will deliver its order in four cases," said another farmer. A panchayat was also held at Dhada village in Greater Noida. Farmers from eight villages attended the panchayat. They have decided to move court if their demands are not met. |

The minimum temperature recorded was 27 degrees Celsius, one degree below the average for this time of the season. However, it is expected to clear once the day progresses," he said. |
Fountain dhalao causes stink
New Delhi, July 24 "During the monsoon, the garbage is strewn all over the road. It even reaches outside my restaurant. There is a traffic jam every day on the road next to the dhalao, because of the garbage trucks and the bulldozer. This has been happening for six months. I have complained numerous times to the MCD, but it has not taken any action," said Shamlal, who owns a restaurant located near the "fountain dhalao". The dhalao is managed by the MCD. It is one of the garbage collection points, constituting a part of the City Zone of Delhi. A private concessionaire, DWM, is responsible for the transportation of the waste to the landfill. Acknowledging the worsening condition caused by the dhalao, Mohan Singh, the MCD sanitary superintendent of the City Zone, said, "We have imposed fines and a penalty of Rs 3 lakh on DWM for not picking up the garbage every day," he said. However, refuting the MCD's charge, Niranjan Singh, the manager of DWM, said that the garbage is collected from the dhalao every day. "We collect it at night so that the traffic is not affected. Due to the congested area, the collection cannot be done during daytime," he said. The residents complain that the trucks and bulldozers collecting the refuse obstruct traffic during daytime. They also complain about the garbage that gets strewn on the road. Sources said that the waste is strewn on the road, because the "floor" of the dhalao is broken, which has created a "pit". However, Niranjan blames people for the garbage strewn on the road as they throw it outside the dhalao. |
BJP protests derogatory word for Valmikis
New Delhi, July 24 Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu and Delhi Pradesh president Vijender Gupta said earlier the word, 'Valmiki', was used in the caste certificates issued by the state government, but since 2011, 'Valmiki' has been replaced by a derogatory word. "There is great anger in the Valmiki community on this issue. The community feels humiliated and hurt," said Sidhu. The BJP leaders said they would raise the issue in the coming session of Parliament. "We will file a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court. The party has appointed Meenakshi Lekhi as the advocate on the matter," said Gupta. "The Congress government wants to humiliate the Valmiki community. When Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri of the Congress Party has already issued order for not using the prohibited word in the caste certificates, how come suddenly the state government has restarted using the word," said Gupta. He said the BJP is serious on the issue and the party had decided to launch a statewide public awareness campaign. It will stage a protest march in the constituency of Chief Minister Sheila Dikhshit and demand prohibition of the derogatory word and prosecution of the guilty persons. |
Chatterati Mayawati is fun to watch during her press conferences. She has a text in hand, reads it, takes no questions and does not mingle with any presswala, no small talk is allowed. She is punctual and precise and there is no commotion. She makes her point, conveys her message and swiftly walks away. Her choice of grooming is a pinkish or pale yellow shiny suit, neatly combed short hair and small gold or diamond studs along with a designer handbag on her arm. This iron lady of Uttar Pradesh does things in her own time and in the way she wants. She is not fazed or overawed by anything or anybody. She knows her clout and is confident of her workers and voters. Sacking ministers or secretaries is so easy for her. This is a politician who has worked day and night and gives no leverage to sycophants or sycophancy. It could be the Congress, Samajwadi or BJP, she is not insecure of any of them. They may sit on dharna or fast, she will strike them down, with a decision or a new policy which will make her more popular. There is no way that she lets her vote bank slip. No leader is taller than her in her own state. She minds her own business and has no concern outside the state. Matronly figures of politics
Madam, behenji, didi, amma or even auntyji are figures that work in politics. Mamata didi swept the polls as she became the first woman CM of West Bengal. Down south, people came in hordes in Tamil Nadu and voted Jayalalithaa, their amma, back in power. DMK MP Kanimozi is daddy's girl but the beti image is not very popular in politics, it seems. Karunanidhi's fatherly instincts for his children do not seem to have done him any good. Sheila Dikshit, the good old grandmother, soft and gentle, yet tough, became Delhi's CM for the third consecutive time. Titles such as behenji for Mayawati, didi for Mamata Banerjee and amma for Jayalalithaa are all important for our voters. They are symbolic and spell goodwill and trust that these leaders share with the aam admi. Ammas and didis are names which spell affection and also respect for the immense amount of work that these women leaders have done. Words such as bhai, bhaiya and brother for the male politicians are expressions used as a sign of popularity. Mamata Banerjee is today our favorite didi and so what if amma had lost a few elections and many times behenji (Mayawati) has faced immense public criticism. These titles do send a message that it's the ammas, didis, aunties and behenjis who are success stories. And the one who continues to be the most powerful of all politicians even in a male-dominated country like ours is "Madam". So, it's the Indian traditional family names which can go a long way if you happen to be in politics. It has probably trust and 'apnapan'. |
Painter awarded 3 years’ jail for hurting wife
New Delhi, July 24 The penalty would be paid by him to his wife Sandhya, the court said. Sentencing Ravinder, the court said: "To say the wife is of a quarrelsome nature or to question her character is no justification for causing physical injury to her." Lau said: "Wife-beating is no longer a private affair...being legally outlawed in India, it is unacceptable. There can be no justification for the same and wife-bashers require to be socially exposed and publicly taken to task." "A message is required to be sent, loud and clear that wife-bashing has no place in a civilised society and violent husbands deserve no mercy," said the court, in an order delivered on Saturday. "Sandhya used to live at her parents' house along with her two children due to a matrimonial discord with Ravinder," said the prosecution. On December 2, 2005, Sandhya went to her husband's house at Uttam Nagar in West Delhi to collect some documents. They had an argument and her husband, along with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, inflicted grievous injuries on her face and body with a trident, the police said. "In the present case, the extent of violence shown by Ravinder is unimaginable. The marital abuse which Sandhya has suffered is not merely a case of domestic spat but a criminal act of assault and violation of civil rights calling for punishment to be inflicted upon the convict as any other act of violence," said Judge Lau. The court noted that Ravinder (44), had disfigured Sandhya's face with the trident, leading to her being hospitalised for 13 days. The injuries left her face permanently disfigured. The court had earlier acquitted Ravinder's mother and sister of the charge of attempting to murder Sandhya. The judge said violent husbands often get away lightly either because "women silently accept the same in order to save their marriage or the victim is financially handicapped and sending the husband to jail would mean the end of financial sustenance for herself and her children". -- IANS |

Thereafter, by morning they would reach their houses or hideouts," said Sharma. The accused also allegedly stole hundreds of electric motors installed in tubewells in Panipat on their way home. According to the official, the accused used to get the vehicles registered from the transport authorities in Mewat in Haryana and Bharatpur in Rajasthan with the help of touts operating there and sold them at good prices. |
