Survival on India’s mind

London, July 24
Ruthless England came down hard on wounded and battered India, but the visitors still had fingernails dug in at the edge of the cliff.Forced to bat at Nos 2 and 3 respectively, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were made to look ungainly by some testing seam and swing bowling, but they batted out till stumps to leave India needing 378 to win on the final day, with nine wickets in hand. Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar were not available to bat in their usual positions because of injury and illness respectively.

Earlier, England extended their overall lead over India to 362 runs with four second innings wickets in hand at tea. Four wickets fell in 32 balls in the morning session before Matt Prior (103 not out) and Stuart Broad (74 not out) restored their team's fortunes on a glorious afternoon to take England to 174 for six at the interval.

Prior's century was crucial for the hosts and his seventh wicket partnership with Broad gavce them the edge. Their rescue act followed an explosive spell from Sharma who dismissed Kevin Pietersen (1), Ian Bell (0) and Jonathan Trott (22) before lunch followed by Eoin Morgan (19) after conceding 128 runs from 32 unsuccessful overs in the first innings.

Alastair Cook had already departed caught behind for one off Praveen Kumar after 43 minutes at the crease followed by Andrew Strauss, lbw for 32 sweeping across a straight delivery from off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Sharma then took over to thrust the world number one side back into contention in the 2,000th test and the 100th between the two countries.

Pietersen, England's first innings hero with an unbeaten 202, edged a steepling delivery to Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. The same combination accounted for Bell in the same over, nibbling fatally outside the off stump.

Sharma then knocked Trott's off stump back, leaving England to lunch uneasily at 72 for five. Morgan resisted for 77 minutes when he fell for 19, caught by Gambhir diving forward at mid-wicket after he had failed to get hold a pull shot off Sharma. — Reuters

Anderson praises Broad for answering critics

Stuart Broad
Stuart Broad

London, July 24
England fast bowler James Anderson today lauded fellow pacer Stuart Broad for answering his critics by taking four wickets, including the prized scalp of Sachin Tendulkar, during the first Test at Lord's. "Kevin Pietersen was not the only one to prove a few critics wrong at Lord's. Stuart Broad bowled magnificently having been under huge pressure over the past few weeks," Anderson said.

"Grabbing the key wicket of Sachin Tendulkar with a beautiful out-swinger was possibly the most eye-catching aspect of his display but he bowled wonderfully from start to finish as we all knew he would if given some slack.

"The key was the length he bowled. Some of our batsmen told us this was a difficult wicket to drive, not just because of the swing in the air but also due to the slow pace off the wicket.

"That encouraged all of us to pitch the ball well up and Broady suddenly looked the bowler he'd been for England before his recent lean spell," he added.

Anderson, who took two wickets for 87 during the first innings, said Broad could have taken more wickets had the fielders latched on to the catches.

"He deserved more and would have had six wickets had our fielders been able to catch," he wrote in his column for the 'Daily Mail'.

"Actually, that's a bit harsh on skipper Andrew Strauss because the one he shelled did seem to wobble in the air just as it came to him. But I've never made excuses for Graeme Swann...and I don't intend to start now!," he added.

Anderson , who will turn 29 this Saturday, also praised Pietersen for making a comeback with an unbeaten 202 during the first innings against India. — PTI

‘Sachin takes the pressure off me’

London, July 24
Indian batsman Rahul Dravid has insisted that he has no problems with the focus being on Sachin Tendulkar after ensuring India avoided the follow-on in the first Test against England at Lord's with a typically well-made hundred. "The talk is always about Sachin and rightly so.

He is a true legend of the game. To be on 99 hundreds ... it was set up for him. He was batting well today so I think there is a big knock from him in the second innings coming up hopefully for us. In some ways it suits me, he gets the pressure a lot on him all the time and I can slip by quietly and do my job and get on with business," said Dravid.

England who made 474 for eight declared their first innings and five without loss at the close of the third day, have a dominant overall lead of 193 over India.

No other Indian batsman exceeded 50 as Dravid, alternating careful defence with wristy elegance, took India to 286 all out with his 33rd Test century and his first at Lord's.

"Not really luckily, in some ways that 274 was actually quite a good thing for me to have in some ways because you know I was thinking about 274 all the time so I crept upon a 100 without thinking so much about my own score and sort of crept of on 274 and after that I thought about the 100," said Dravid. — ANI

Hockey merger on our terms: KPS Gill
M.S.Unnikrishnan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 24
Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) today said it was ready for merger with Hockey India (HI) but with certain conditions. It said the new body should have a fresh constitution and provision for rotation of office of the secretary general and treasurer.

“We have no problem with Sunil Mital as president of the new body because we initiated the move to make him head of the new set up, but it is imperative to have power-sharing for the secretary general and treasurer”, said former IHF president K.P.S.Gill at a media interaction here today.

Gill said he was aware of the ultimatum given by Sports Minister Ajay Maken, asking IHF and HI to merge by July 25. “We are willing to do that and we will go to the meeting tomorrow with an open mind”. Maken has called a meeting of the rival hockey bodies at his chamber tomorrow to hammer out a final solution.

Gill, presently the chief adviser of the IHF, insisted that the IOA and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) had not been fair to the IHF. “We are an aggrieved party, we cannot be ignored just like that. We cannot be forced to accept patiently illegal things.

“We are all for the improvement of the game in the country but cannot surrender our rights to the IOA and the FIH” he added. Gill also lashed out at the FIH for what he called was “Its continuous dabbling in Indian hockey.”

“The dubious acts of FIH and IOA in formation of Hockey India and its affiliation with FIH well before Hockey India was registered in India and recognized by IOA and Govt of India are now well known. FIH does not want IHF to organise the World Series Hockey (WSH) league”, he said.

“Now when the IHF has come out with a plan to promote and popularize the game and market it so that the players could get the money, the FIH is creating all sorts of hurdles. A proactive FIH in its zeal to make money for itself is not only protecting illegally formed Hockey India, an altar ego of the IOA, but also running the HI with remote control in their hands. FIH quickly reacts to the activities of IHF with regard to WSH without realising the fact that the IHF is the sole governing body for the game in the country as per court orders and IOA and Ministry of Sports also do not dispute this fact”, Gill noted.

He disclosed that IHF had sent a notice to FIH for arbitrary breach of contract regarding the conduct of the World Cup, which was allotted to IHC/IHF and in reply it said: “It is impossible to reply within the timeframe you have specified. Your letter contains very serious allegations, which require careful examination and consideration and require the Federation to consult with its legal advisers and others who have knowledge of the matters you have raised in your letter. These people are spread throughout the world and it will take time to conduct the process of consultation and to instruct the Federation’s legal advisers. You will be provided with a reply as soon as the Federation is able to do so.”

“A reply to the notice sent to the FIH has not been received even after 15 months. It is surprising that FIH reacts with unusual alacrity to any activity announced by IHF but either they do not respond to communication of the IHF and even if they do, it is in the manner as quoted above. We caution FIH to desist from interfering for the good of Hockey in India and for the World Hockey at large,” Gill summed up.

Home ministry backs Bharat Ratna for sportspersons

New Delhi, July 24
The chances of a sportsperson, probably cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, getting the Bharat Ratna have brightened, with the home ministry backing the suggestion to include sports as a category for the award of India's topmost civilian award, sources said.

"Though there is nothing to prevent a sportsperson from being given Bharat Ratna at present, the latest communication would put the record clearer," a senior official told IANS Saturday.

He pointed out that sportspersons have been given awards up to Padma Vibhushan. "That way, nothing can block a sportsman getting the topmost award," he said.

Sources said the home ministry has sent a communication to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) supporting the recommendation to include sports among the categories to be considered for awarding the Bharat Ratna.

The sports ministry had recently sent a letter to the home ministry, urging that sports be included for Bharat Ratna.

The ministry recommendation comes in the wake of appeals by several sports associations that Sachin Tendulkar be considered for the highest award of the country.

At present, the Bharat Ratna is awarded for "exceptional services towards advancement of art, literature and science, and in recognition of public service of the highest order". — IANS

Hamilton wins in style

Nurburgring, July 24
Lewis Hamilton produced a monumental drive to take his second win of the season in the German Formula One Grand Prix after an enthralling battle with Ferrari's second-placed Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber.

The only disappointment for the local supporters was Red Bull's titleholder and championship leader Sebastian Vettel struggling in his home race to finish fourth. Vettel's run of 11 successive podium finishes ended, but the 24-year-old saw his overall lead trimmed by just three points over team mate Webber to 77 with nine races left.

Pole sitter Webber, who finally led a lap for the first time this year, had watched Vettel win six of the previous nine races, while finishing in the top two each time. This time, both Red Bulls were outshone by the flying Briton, who started on the front row and seized the lead into the first corner.

"Woo hoo, great job guys, great job. An incredible feeling, oh wow," said Hamilton, who leapfrogged Spaniard Alonso into third in the standings. Vettel has 216 points, Webber 139, Hamilton 134 and double world champion Alonso 130.

Hamilton, who said he had no chance of pole before seizing second on the grid, made a great start while Alonso also got past Vettel only to soon lose the initiative. As the front five predictably pulled away from the pack, Alonso - who won last time in Britain for Ferrari's first victory of the season - retook the struggling Vettel in style at turn one of the ninth lap.

Further drama ensued when Webber, who was only the third man since 1995 to win here from pole two years ago, edged ahead of Hamilton only for the pumped-up Briton to immediately retake the lead with a courageous move down the straight.

Red Bull performed their usual heroics in the pits to get Webber back out in front of Hamilton, but by the second round of pit stops, Alonso found himself ahead before an outrageous pass by the McLaren sent the Briton clear. A third pit stop had Hamilton just coming out in front and he surged towards the chequered flag for his 16th career win. — Reuters

"I'm a forward and I have to score goals, I work for the team. For me, it's more important that the team wins," Guerrero said after becoming top scorer at the tournament with five goals, two more than Luis Suarez of Uruguay and Argentina's Sergio Aguero.

Peru, who began the tournament as outsiders, but improved with each match, while favourites Argentina, Brazil and Chile fell by the wayside, contributed to one of the best matches. "Peru played a much better match than us," said Venezuela's coach Cesar Farias. — Reuters

India lose 0-3 to UAE

Abu Dhabi, July 24
Reduced to nine men after a couple of early red cards, the Indian football team lost 0-3 to the United Arab Emirates here, in a second-round qualifying match for the World Cup.

Defender Debabrata Roy and goalkeeper Subrata Paul were red carded in the 21st and 24th minutes as India were left with just nine men for more than an hour in the match at Sheikh Khlaifa Bin Zayed Stadium, here yesterday.

Hamdan Al Kamali and Ismail Al Hammadi converted the spot kicks which resulted from the infringements by Roy and Paul in the 21st and 24th minutes. Ismail Al Hammadi added another goal in the 80th minute to complete the tally.

After the 0-3 loss, it will now be a huge task for India to progress to the next round as they need to beat UAE by a bigger margin in New Delhi in the return leg on July 28. Roy and Paul, India's number one goalkeeper, will have to sit out of that match at the Ambedkar Stadium.

The match seemed over even before it started as India failed to recover from the two-man as well as two-goal deficit in the span of three minutes. — PTI

"It's been 20 years since I watched my very first Tour de France on TV and I said I'd like to win it. A lot of people didn't believe it," Evans, who was swamped by his BMC Racing team mates after crossing the finishing line on Sunday, said.

"But some very good people believed in me, from my very first coach right through to the ones who turned me to the road." — Reuters
