India’s Tour of England
1st Test starts July 21
‘Fletcher advantage for India’

London, July 18
England's middle-order batsman Ian Bell feels Duncan Fletcher's presence as the coach will be a massive advantage for Team India in the upcoming Test series against England

"It's great for India, Duncan Fletcher knows English cricket very well and was very successful over here. He knows Straussy well, he knows myself, he knows Kevin Pietersen. I'm sure we've changed as characters and matured since he's been away, but he'll have a good insight and there's no doubt that's a massive plus for India," Bell told ESPNcricinfo.

Fletcher was the coach of England from 1999 to 2007. During his tenure he guided them to a historic Ashes victory in 2005.

Bell said although India will have an advantage, these days every team has information about the opposition in any case. "But in world cricket now information, strengths and weakness, everyone knows about them. We have people working non-stop at Loughborough on stats, percentages and stuff like that. There's no hiding place anymore, so while it's an advantage for India to have him, everyone has information about opposition," said the right-hander.

India will play four-match Test series against England, starting at the Lord's from Thursday.

Heaping praise on Fletcher as a coach, Bell, said, "He's quite a quiet man and goes about his business in his own way. He'll know everything about what England have. In 2005 he was a massive part of the plans we had for the Australians - like going round the wicket to Adam Gilchrist - and he's got an unbelievable cricket brain. That's his massive strength. We know he's an incredible coach."

Lucky to get India’s top wickets: Willoughby

Taunton: In awe of the line-up he single-handedly annihilated, Somerset pacer Charl Willoughby warned England not to read too much into India's flop-show in the drawn practice match here as he was "plain lucky" to dismiss the visiting team's great batsmen.

"I was lucky there's no doubt about it. They played some shots they would not normally play in Test cricket. For example, you would not see Rahul (Dravid) play that kind of shot. The way (Amit) Mishra got out was plain luck. May be we were more up for the game, against a county side, may be they were not," said Willoughby, who took 6/76 against the Indians.

"They are going to bounce back. I don't think they would bat the way they batted here. They would be far more competitive. I don't think they would play like that again," he added.

Willoughby considers it a privilege he could bowl against his “ultimate batsman” - Tendulkar. “I was nervous bowling to him. His bat appears wider than anyone else in the world. He is such a calm man at the crease. He wanted to spend some time in the middle but was unfortunate to get out. It was a privilege bowling to him.

"Tendulkar is the ultimate batsman to have walked on this earth. People say about Sir Don Bradman but he has had a very long successful career as a modern day batsman. Tendulkar is the ultimate batsman, everyone admires him. I remember beating him once," Willoughby said.

We bullied India, says Somerset coach

On a high after managing to "bully" India on all three days of a drawn practice match, county side Somerset's coach Andy Hurry said his team has given England the upperhand against the world number ones ahead of their Test series starting on Thursday.

"I fully understand it's quite difficult for Test sides to get themselves up for these games, however it's about practising good habits," Hurry said.

"It's was important that we gave it our best shot and really put them under the pump. We won the toss on a great batting pitch, dominated the game and started to bully them which is a great position for England to sit back in their seats and appreciate what we have done for them."

Aggressive Viru will be missed : Chappell

New Delhi: The absence of hard-hitting Virender Sehwag could affect India's hopes of imposing themselves early in the Test series in England that starts Thursday, former Australia captain Ian Chappell has warned.

Opener Sehwag, known for dominating bowlers with exciting strokeplay, is recovering from a shoulder injury and set to miss the first two Tests of the four-match series.

"There's no batsman in the world who can disrupt bowling plans quicker than Sehwag," Chappell wrote in his column on a website.

"It appears that fate has come down ever so slightly in England's favour. The first two venues in this series, Lord's and Trent Bridge, are known to favour swing bowling.

"England's ability to swing both the new and old ball is a big reason behind their recent rise up the rankings. In addition, India are missing their greatest counter-attacking weapon." Sehwag played a key role in India's six-wicket win over England in the first Test of the last series between the two countries in 2008 when he hammered a 68-ball 83 to help his team achieve a stiff 387-run target in Chennai.

"The one time a captain should not be overly cautious is at the start of a series, when a team can take mental superiority by being aggressive," said Chappell. — Agencies

Harbhajan sends notice to Mallya’s UB Spirits over Dhoni advertisement

New Delhi, July 18
India's ace spinner Harbhajan Singh has served a legal notice on Vijay Mallya-owned UB Spirits over a television advertisement that shows Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni "mocking" at him.

The legal notice has been sent by Avtar Kaur, Harbhajan's mother, through his lawyers, Dewani Advocates & Consultants. Harbhajan's lawyers, in the legal notice, have claimed that the commercial mocks the off-spinner, his family and the Sikh community.

Advocate Shyam Dewani, one of the lawyers, said that more than the cricketer, his family was upset. While sending the notice for ad spoof, the off-spinner's mother Avtar Kaur said these kind of advertisements bring "disunity and friction" in the Indian team and can be termed anti-national.

The notice demands that the company publicly apologise to Harbhajan's family "through widely-read newspapers as well as television channels prominently" apart from removing the advertisement within three days of receiving the notice.

"My client is serving you with the instant notice to give you an opportunity to accept your mistake and make amends. Failing this, we will have no other alternative than to take appropriate legal action including that of filing proceedings for defamation, damages and all such civil as well as criminal actions," the notice, signed by lawyer Shyam Dewani, said.

Apart from Mallya, the notice has been sent to UB Executive Vice Chairman SR Gupte, President & CFO Ravi Nedungadi, Deputy President Harish Bhat and Executive VP (Corporate Affairs) Nandini Verma. It also seeks a compensation of Rs 1,00,000 to the cricketer's family towards the cost of the notice.

Harbhajan and Dhoni endorse rival brands. The Indian skipper in an McDowell's No 1 Platinum advertisement allegedly makes fun of Harbhajan, who had featured in a advertisement for Royal Stag. Both Royal Stag and McDowell's No 1 are competing whiskey brands in the market, coming in the same price band.

The ads, however, are for the soda brands. The Harbhajan ad for Royal Stag has the tag-line "Have I made it large?" The Dhoni ad for the McDowell's has a Harbhajan look-alike ask, "Have I made it large?" and Dhoni says, "Forget large, do something different."

In the Dhoni commercial, the Harbhajan look-alike works in a factory and gets slapped by his father for creating humongous iron balls in a tryst to 'make it large' at the ball-bearings workshop. — PTI

J&K to have two new cricket stadiums

Tribune News Service

Srinagar, July 18
The State of Jammu and Kashmir will soon have two cricket stadiums of international standards. The Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium, which hosted an international match between India and the West Indies more than three decades ago, now lies in a shambles.

But the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) will be constructing two new stadiums in Jammu and Srinagar. JKCA president Farooq Abdullah said yesterday that JKCA had identified land at Ganderbal in Kashmir for the construction of an international standard stadium for which BCCI president Shashank Manohar, ICC president Sharad Pawar and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone.

“We have identified land at Ganderbal,” Abdullah said. “We will talk to the Chief Minster and Sports Minister for acquisition of the land. We have to build an international stadium here.” He said that the construction works for the stadium at Bajalta in Jammu will start form September this year.

“We have already acquired land in Jammu. We will start developing the road leading to the ground from September so that construction material is carried to the stadium. When we have international stadiums, cricket will improve in the State,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah, president of National Conference and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, responding to questions on the role of politicians in cricket administration, following the defeat of former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar to former Maharashtra Chief Minister in the Mumbai Cricket Association polls, said, “If politicians leave things (sports administration) alone, then nothing will be done. Politicians have keys to open doors which others do not have.”

Patiala, July 18
The Patiala-based duo of Jagbir Singh and Shivkaran Mokha have made the city proud, with podium positions in two different categories of the Summer Sprint Rally-2011. They were the only participants from Patiala part of this off-road fast-paced gravel event that was organised in Noida last Sunday.

The two were delighted with their performance. “Our team was sponsored by Shield Lubricants and we grabbed two podium positions. Our Baleno was first in the 1400cc and above Two-Wheel Drive category. Our Baleno was the fastest in 2WD cars with a time of four minutes and 23 seconds, four seconds faster than the runners-up. Then, our Esteem was second in 1400cc and below 2WD category,” they added.

They said the fun and excitement were beyond comparison. It was an off-road fast-paced, smooth grit surface and a technically challenging track with fast and flowing corners, 90 degrees to the left or right.

This event was organised by Northern Motorsports, the organisers of the famous Desert Storm Rally, Mokha added. This is not the first time that the duo has won laurels. They had won the SJOBA Rally (Super Special Stage), Chandigarh, in 2009 and 2010 and were third in Formula EH Italy. They were the only team from Asia which participated in that rally.

Tendulkar, Kapil, Gavaskar, Sehwag named in All Time Test team

Dubai, July 18
Four Indian cricketers, including batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, were today named in the Greatest All Time Test XI chosen in an online poll. The other two — Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag — beat a host of legendary cricketers to be named in the two openers' slot.

They beat competition from the likes of Geoffrey Boycott, Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Hanif Mohammad and Herbert Sutcliffe. Four Australians, two West Indians and one Pakistani also made it to Peoples' Dream XI as more than a quarter of million people voted on ICC's official website as part of the build-up to the England-India Test match at Lord's to celebrate the 2000th cricket Test.

Tendulkar occupied the number four batting spot, one slot down Australian legend Don Bradman and one above West Indian Brian Lara, who was chosen at number five.

The trio beat the likes of Greg Chappell, Wally Hammond, George Headley, Javed Miandad, Graeme Pollock, Ricky Ponting and Vivian Richards.

Kapil was chosen as the lone all-rounder ahead of the likes of Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, Jacques Kallis, Imran Khan, Gary Sobers and Frank Worrell.

Australian Adam Gilchrist won the poll for wicket-keeper by beating the likes of Mark Boucher, Jeff Dujon and Rod Marsh while Shane Warne got the nod of online voters ahead of the likes of India's Bishen Bedi and Anil Kumble and Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan. Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose and Glenn McGrath were named in the three fast bowlers' slots.

The likes of Michael Holding, Dennis Lillee, Malcolm Marshall and Courtney Walsh missed out.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said the enthusiasm shown by the fans by taking part in the online poll in huge numbers showed Test cricket's popularity.

Copa America
Paraguay beat Brazil

La Plata, July 17
South America’s soccer hierarchy was hit by an Andean tremor as Venezuela stunned Chile 2-1 and Paraguay shocked holders Brazil by eliminating them from the Copa America on Sunday.

Venezuela's stunning 2-1 victory over fancied Chile was the only one of the quarter-finals not to go to extra time, while two ended in penalty shootouts, Brazil losing 2-0 to Paraguay after Argentina went out against old rivals Uruguay on Saturday. “It’s a historic achievement but our players aren’t satisfied with that, they want more, above all because we said we would beat Chile,” Venezuela coach Cesar Farias told reporters.

“I’m surprised that after every match that Venezuela have played, every team that we've played against has said that we've played poorly or that we don't deserve anything. Well, that’s fine. Let them continue to look down on us.”

The semifinals were left devoid of South America's big two, Brazil and Argentina, who had meet in the two previous finals both won by the Brazilians, and also Colombia, who had emerged as title contenders until they were upset by Peru on Saturday.

The semifinal line-up has Uruguay, on course for a record 15th title, facing Peru in La Plata on Tuesday and Paraguay against Venezuela in Mendoza.

Peru have been one of the weaker teams in the region for decades, while Venezuela had never been this far before. Brazil, who drew 2-2 with Paraguay in the group phase, dominated their quarter-final in La Plata from start to finish.

But the Brazilians, who scored six goals altogether, failed to put away their many chances while Paraguay clung on with dogged defence and a brilliant performance from goalkeeper and captain Justo Villar.

“We worked hard, we were far superior (to Paraguay) and we didn't score a goal which is the most important part of football," Brazil coach Mano Menezes told the post-match news conference. — Reuters
