Gurgaon mayoral poll put off
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, June 14
The election to the post of Gurgaon Mayor and his deputies, as well as the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councillors, which were scheduled to be held today, have been postponed till June 21.

Government functionaries maintain that the election and oath-taking ceremony have been put off as the Gurgaon Divisional Commissioner, TK Sharma, who was slated to preside over the maiden meeting of the corporation, had to attend an official meeting in Chandigarh.

However, the Opposition as well as several newly elected councillors have alleged that the move was a clear violation of the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, which maintains that the first meeting of the corporation shall be held within 30 days of the publication of the result of the election.

District INLD president and former Deputy Speaker Gopi Chand Gehlot said Congress leaders had got the Mayor’s poll postponed in view of their “certain defeat”.

Meanwhile, councillor Nisha Singh filed a petition against the decision to postpone the oath-taking ceremony and the Mayor’s election.

The government has decided to set up two eco-cities, also called smart communities, in Jhajjar and Manesar towns with active support of Japan.

A feasibility report is ready for study. Eco-city is an eco-friendly initiative in which citizens, business and government work, live and interact through delivery of integrated, low-carbon products and services.

This was stated by Industries Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala after a meeting with two Japanese delegations. Comprising representatives of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and leading MNC Toshiba, the delegations made a presentation on the feasibility of the two projects before Surjewala.

Expressing his conceptual agreement with the proposal, the minister said that the business model of eco-cities should be so designed as to make facilities and services available at rates commensurate with the market prices.

BJP plans 100 rallies to expose UPA scams
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, June 14
Former BJP president Venkaiah Naidu today said the party would organise 100 public rallies in the country between June 23 and 26 to create awareness among the masses about various “scams and corrupt practices” of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre.

Two or three rallies will be held in Haryana, he added. Talking to mediapersons here after a meeting of the state office-bearers of the party, Naidu said the government was “impatient, insecure and arrogant”, and was afraid of facing the public because it had lost the faith of the people.

“Under the prevailing circumstances when there is resentment against the government everywhere, the Congress may opt for imposing Emergency again in the country,” he added.

“Various scams are being exposed by the CAG, opposition parties, courts and the media, and the UPA government is trying to hide the facts,” he said.

Having a dig at the style of functioning of the government at the Centre, Naidu said, “The PM proposes, Madam opposes and the Cabinet disposes”, in this government.

To a question about Baba Ramdev’s agitation, Naidu said the party was behind Baba Ramdev in his crusade against corruption.

He alleged that the UPA Government was in the habit of misusing agencies like the CBI, the IB, the enforcement directorate and the income tax authorities to terrorise the Opposition.

State BJP president Krishan Pal Gurjar, joint in charge of the party affairs in Haryana Harsh Vardhan, former minister ID Swami, MLAs Kavita Jain, Anil Vij and Ghanshyam Dass Sharraf, former MPs Kishan Singh Sangwan, Ram Chander Bainda and Rattan Lal Kataria, and state media in charge Rajiv Jain were present on the occasion.
