Encroachment
drive triggers clash in Gurgaon Tribune News Service
Gurgaon, June 7 The trouble began when an anti-encroachment team reached Fatehpur Jharsa slum locality near Sector 47 in the city to remove the unauthorised dwellings. Several residents of the area protested against the move, saying that they had been living there for several decades and they had not been served any notices by the authorities prior to the demolition exercise. “Where should we take our families and belongings in the face of such a situation?” asked a slum-dweller. However, the demolition squad remained adamant on removal of the illegal encroachments from the area. In an ensuing clash, several jhuggis were burnt to ashes and two vehicles torched. The government officials, who were part of the team, alleged that the mob not only pelted them with stones but also burnt a couple of vehicles. |
Honour
Killing Saurabh Malik Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, June 7 Blaming the police for not investigating the “honour killing” case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stepped in. Justice Alok Singh today not only issued notice to the DGP and the Sonepat SP but also asked them to furnish the details of the probe. They have further been asked to file “their personal affidavits”. The directions by Justice Alok Singh came after the High Court took cognizance of a letter by Kaushalya Devi of Gumad village under Gannaur police station in Sonepat district. Alleging the murder of her son, Sunil, and Jyoti, she had described it as a case of honour killing. Justice Alok Singh observed that Kaushalya Devi’s letter, sent to the Chief Justice, has been placed before him on the judicial side. “Having read the contents of the application, I find this a fit case where cognizance can be taken by this court,” Justice Alok Singh asserted. “The applicant has blamed the parents and other family members of Jyoti for the murder of Sunil and Jyoti.” |
‘Chakka jam’ today
Chandigarh, June 7 According to Transport Minister OP Jain, instructions have been issued to the district administration to take all preventive measures to ensure that all those who come to work are not harassed by anyone. At the same time, roadways’ officers have talked to union activists and other employees to educate them about various welfare measures taken by the government in their interest. The strike call has been given by the unions to protest against the proposed allotment of 2,700 permits to private operators to ply buses in the state. The samiti says it has been protesting against the privatisation policy of the government. Its leaders said the strike call was given after they failed to make the government understand the pitfalls of the outsourcing policy and privatisation. The samiti leaders say instead of going in for privatisation, the government should fill vacant posts and regularise ad hoc staff to strengthen the department. In many districts, the authorities have obtained restraint orders from courts, putting a restriction of varying distance on the union activity near bus stands. Magistrates have been deputed at strategic places to deal with law and order issues. The government says privatisation of bus routes is not being introduced in the state now. It has been in vogue since 1993 when the first policy was framed. A second policy was framed in 2001, which was challenged in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Quashing the policy in 2008, the court asked the state government to frame a new policy. The court had been monitoring the process of policy-making. Therefore, the government cannot withdraw the state carriage policy of 2011. Meanwhile, talks between representatives of the roadways’ employees and the government over the issue failed late tonight. Villagers hold cops ‘captive’
Sirsa, June 7 The villagers were demanding action against the police post in charge, who, they alleged, did not arrest a man accused of molesting a schoolgirl due to some extraneous reasons. Jagat Pal, a man running a books and stationery shop in the village, allegedly outraged the modesty of a student of Class V on June 4. The girl’s parents lodged a complaint with the police after she narrated the incident to them. However, the police, the villagers alleged, connived with the shopkeeper and did not make any efforts to arrest him, though he was present in the village. |
ACP’s Murder
Panchkula, June 7 Bhardwaj, lodged in Gurgaon jail, had sought interim bail for getting treatment for his heart ailment from Apollo hospital in Delhi. Opposing the bail plea of Bhardwaj, the CBI council replied that he was not a normal accused as he had killed a senior Delhi police officer. Moreover, interim bail to the accused at this stage would hamper the prosecution’s case, he added. The CBI counsel further said as per the documents attached with Bhardwaj’s bail application, he was not suffering from any serious ailment and if he needed any treatment, the CBI would get him treated at the PGI, Chandigarh or Rohtak, in police custody. The CBI court turned down the plea of Bhardwaj’s counsel, who had stated that Bhardwaj was ready to bear all medical expenses for the treatment in the Apollo hospital at New Delhi. ACP Rajbir Singh was shot dead on March 24 in Gurgaon. Bhardwaj had surrendered before the Gurgaon police after the incident. The CBI took over the investigation of the case on June 2, 2008. Meanwhile, the special CBI court today rejected the interim bail application of Jasbir, co-accused in the murder and rape case against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. However, the court deferred the hearing in the interim bail application of Krishan Lal to June 12. Krishan Lal had also sought interim bail on health grounds while Jasbir had sought interim bail for getting his children admitted to a school. Both the accused are lodged in Ambala jail. |

SIRSA: Followers of Baba Ramdev continued their hunger strike outside the mini-secretariat for the third day on Tuesday. Earlier, Hari Singh Jangra was taken ill and was shifted to a hospital for treatment. He came back after getting well today and again sat on strike. However, the protesters lifted their dharna in the evening. REWARI: A large number of INLD activists led by party legislator Rameshwar Dayal staged a demonstration and burnt an effigy of Congress president Sonia Gandhi at Rajiv Gandhi Chowk here on Tuesday. Activists of the Bharat Swabhiman Trust and other voluntary organisations also staged a dharna near the district secretariat here.
