Shop till you drop, but not on a Sunday!

Chandigarh’s rendezvous with “Sunday shopping” is over. In a decision that will disappoint shoppers in the city, particularly the main commercial centre in Sector 17, the UT Administration has said it disfavours the seven-day shopping concept. This will not apply to restaurants, eateries and chemists.

Man run over by train; road traffic held up

Hundreds of motorists were stranded when traffic on the Panchkula-Chandigarh road came to a standstill following the death of a person on the track under the railway overbridge in Manimajra this afternoon.

Driver’s licence delays plague city drivers
Chandigarh, June 7
Unavailability of plastic cards used for making driver’s licenses and vehicle registration certificates is causing considerable delay in the delivery of “smart” cards by the UT registration & licensing authority (RLA) office. In contrast to the usual time of only a day or two for obtaining a new license or registration, applicants are now being told to allow at least 20 days for the cards to issued.

Biometric system for teachers likely in govt schools

In order to check growing absenteeism among teachers of government schools, the education department will be installing biometric attendance devices in schools. The system, which will be installed with the help of the state government, will start functioning from August this year.

In what is being dubbed as one of its major admission reforms, Panjab University has started online admissions on the basis of Common Entrance Test, 2011, results.

Man hit by train, injured
Kalka, June 7
A man got critically injured today as he was hit by a train on the Kalka-Ambala railway track. Official sources of railways revealed that the incident took place around 6.30 pm during the arrival of the Bandra-Kalka train. The man was walking along the railway track and got hit by the train, despite of the repeated whistles by the train driver.

Three killed, two hurt in road mishap
Ambala, June 7
Nitin Kumar Verma (23) and Subhash Chauhan (21), both residents of Dak Pathar, Dehradun district, died on the spot near Khan Ahmedpur village on the National Highway number 73, near Ambala Cantt, when their Alto car, bearing registration number UK-A-6823, collided with a truck coming from the opposite side. However, the truck driver managed to flee leaving the vehicle on the spot.

Hundreds of chicks die in railway bogie

In a gruesome incident several hundred chicks sent by a poultry farmer from Ambala to Jammu by rail died due to the excessive heat. The chicks were packed in cardboard boxes and the heat in the railway bogie proved too much for them that died during their railway journey.

Eight heads of cattle die in mishap
Ambala, June 7
A truck carrying around 15 heads of cattle overturned near Ambala City this morning. Eight heads of cattle died in the mishap. The truck was coming from Patiala and was going toward Saharanpur. The agitated people set the truck on fire.

Body found on railway track

A youth was found dead on the railway track near Dera Bassi railway overbridge last night. As per information, nearly 35-year-old clean shaven youth wearing a white shirt and trousers was found dead from the railway track near Dera Bassi last night by the railway police.

Consumer forum tells insurance firm to pay up car claim
Chandigarh, June 7
The UT Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum (II) has directed Royal Sundaram Alliance Insurance Company to pay Rs 3.27 lakh to a Ludhiana resident whose vehicle was stolen. It was also told to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation and Rs 7,000 as the cost of litigation to the complainant for not settling the claim.

On the complaint of Kiran, a resident of Janta Colony, Nayagaon, the police has booked her husband Om Pal in an attempt to murder case.

5 nabbed for theft; sent to juvenile home
Zirkapur: Five minor boys were caught while stealing at a house in Shivalik Vihar here on Monday evening. The accused are residents of Lohgarh and Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh.
