One killed, three injured in accidents
Kharar/ Ropar, June 7 As per the police, Tejinder was travelling from Chandigarh towards Chamkaur Sahib in his black Indica car. When he approached near the spot around 1.30 am an unknown vehicle rammed into his car. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, where he died during the treatment. He is survived by his wife and a seven-month-old child. The police have registered a case against the unknown driver. Tejinder used to do welding work at Lakheri village in Chamkaur Sahib. At Ghanauli, in Ropar, three persons got injured in two accidents. Around 5 am today, Ramesh Kumar, Som Dutt and Sucha Singh from Jalandhar were going in their Maruti car from Jalandhar to Haridwar via Anandpur Sahib. When they reached near Ghanauli barrier, a speeding tanker from Himachal Pradesh rammed into their car. All three car occupants got injured and were taken to the Ropar Civil Hospital. The impact of the collision was so big that the Maruti fell into the rivulet below. The Ghanauli police impounded both the vehicles. Similarly, near Malakpur village, when a truck was moving towards Ambuja factory, a Tavera vehicle hit it. The Tavera was moving from Delhi to Manali. Driver Sukhpal Singh Dharamkot and five members of a family from Delhi were travelling in the Tavera. The police has registered a case. |

Ambala, June 7 In another accident on the Ambala-Chandigarh road, three members of an Ambala-based family going to Panchkula sustained serious injuries when the vehicle in which they were travelling fell in a roadside pit after being hit by an unidentified vehicle near the Haryana-Punjab border. While a six-month-old girl succumbed to her injuries in the accident, two others, Madhu (53) and Minakshi (26), sustained serious injuries and were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, for treatment by the Civil Hospital, Ambala City. |

Hundreds of chicks die in railway bogie
Ambala, June 7 Railway sources said, a local poultry trader booked a bogie for several hundred chicks packed in 13 boxes to be dispatched to Jammu railway station from Ambala Cantt railway parcel office. The local poultry trader had booked the consignment four days ago. These chicks are believed to have died during transit since the consignee had refused to take delivery of the consignment. Caught in a difficult situation, sources said, the railway authorities at Jammu railway station were left with no option, but to send the consignment back to Ambala. As a consequence thereof, the railway authorities at Jammu re-booked the consignment back to Ambala from Jammu. On the arrival of the consignment at Ambala it was found that nearly 75% chicks were dead due to excessive heat in the closed railway bogie. Officials of railway parcel office at Ambala said no claim was permissible to the local poultry trader who had dispatched the consignment containing chicks under the present hot weather conditions and the loss occurred due to consignee’s refusal to take the delivery. |

Eight heads of cattle die in mishap
Ambala, June 7 According to information, the truck coming from Patiala overturned in the Layalpur Basti area this morning. The people of the area gathered there and learnt that the bulls were being taken to a slaughter house at Saharnpur. The people rescued the remaining cattle from the truck and set the vehicle on fire in agitation. The driver and the cleaner of the truck managed to flee from the site. The police registered a case against the unknown driver. |

Officials visit controversial site
Dera Bassi, June 7 Officials had assured both communities that the issue would be resolved according to law and with the consent of communities concerned. A police force had been deployed near the controversial site to prevent any untoward situation. The environment in Nagla village got tensed due to a controversy between two communities over the construction of a mosque in the village. Members of Muslim community were reportedly constructing the mosque on the land of Punjab Wakf Board, which is spread over 10 bigha, when some people belonging to other community had allegedly damaged the constructed structure. Members of the Muslim community said they wanted a peaceful solution to this issue. |
Consumer forum tells insurance firm to pay up car claim
Chandigarh, June 7 In his complaint, Rakesh Kumar, stated that he had purchased a Santro car for Rs 3.45 lakh on February 2, 2009, which was financed by HDFC Bank. The car was insured for one year with the declared value of Rs 3.27 lakh. The car was stolen from his house on May 31, 2009, and he informed the insurance company and reported the matter to the police. The insurance company had appointed Royal Associates as surveyor and the complainant was asked to submit documents. The complainant submitted the documents along with the copy of a police report under Section 173, CrPC, where it was mentioned that the car could not be traced. However, the company refused to give the claim on the grounds that the untraced report was not available. The forum stated that the report had been filed before the court and no further documents were required. The refusal to settle the claim amounts to deficiency in service on part of the company. The forum directed the company to pay the insured amount of Rs 3.27 lakh along with an interest at 10 per cent per annum from September 1, 2009, till the date of actual payment. |

Husband booked in attempt to murder case
Mohali, June 7 In her complaint, Kiran alleged that her husband returned home after consuming alcohol on June 5 and started assaulting her. She alleged that her husband poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze with an intention to kill her. She was admitted to the PGI, Chandigarh. The police said after recording statement of
the victim, a case under Section 307 of the IPC had been registered against Om Pal. One booked for fraud The Mohali police booked a travel agent for duping a Ludhiana resident of Rs 50,000 on the pretext of sending him abroad. The accused has been identified as Jasvir Singh. The police said Sarbjit Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, had filed a complaint alleging that Jasvir Singh had taken Rs 50,000 from him. But he neither sent him abroad nor returned the money, the police added. A case under Sections 406, 420 of IPC and Immigration Act has been registered against the accused. In another case, Sant Singh, a resident of Mahima village, and Randhir Singh, a resident of Patiala, had filed complaints with the police that Karanvir Singh had taken Rs 1.50 lakh from them on the pretext of sending them to Spain. They claimed that the deal was settled at Rs 8.50 lakh. But the accused neither sent their sons abroad, nor returned the money. The police official said that a case under Sections 419, 420, 465, 468, 471, 120-B of the IPC and 24 Immigration Act was registered.
One booked under Immigration Act
The police today registered a case under Section 24 Immigration Act against Deepak Arora, a resident of SCF 54, Phase VII, Mohali, on the complaint of Vinod Kumar, deputy director, Immigration of Chandigarh. The police said Vinod Kumar had filed a complaint claiming that Deepak Arora had applied for a licence to run an immigration centre but the ministry concerned had not issued any licence to him. Later, it was found that the accused was running his immigration business without any permission. A case under Section 24 of the Immigration Act had been registered against the accused. |

5 nabbed for theft; sent to juvenile home
Zirkapur: Five minor boys were caught while stealing at a house in Shivalik Vihar here on Monday evening. The accused are residents of Lohgarh and Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh.
They were produced in a juvenile court in Mohali and were later sent to a juvenile home in Ludhiana. Investigating officer Shamsher Singh said the complainant, Mohammad Sultan, a caretaker of the house, said the incident came to light around 5 pm when he went to the house. The lock of the main door was found broken. He called nearby residents and entered the house. They nabbed the boys who were present in the house and informed the police. |

Karnataka get better of Chandigarh in hockey
Chandigarh, June 7 After a tough fight, local lads went down to Karnataka by 2-1 in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. Karnataka drew the first blood in the 20th minute. Chandigarh came back strongly and levelled the score in the 48th minute of the game, but later in the 60th minute, Karnataka scored the decisive goal to win the match. In the league stage of the tournament, Chandigarh defeated Manipur by 4-2 and Delhi by 3-1 to move to the knockout stage of the tournament. Earlier the Delhi team alleged Chandigarh for fielding “overage” players, however, doctors from the organising committee failed to submit medical reports on time and the Delhi team also withdrew the allegations later. However, the Chandigarh Hockey Association authorities deny that any “defaulter” was included in the squad, as all players who had come under scanner are eligible for playing and also are the former product of the hockey academy, which admit players after proper medical check up. “We have taken care of all aspects and rules to send our team, so there is no question of being any defaulter in the team. The players have taken along all age-proof documents and also they are the part of the academy,” said YP Vohra. On the other hand, Karnataka will face Punjab in the final of the national tournament. |
