Admn messes up on college prospectuses

Despite its tall claims of having “streamlined” the admission process in government colleges in the city, the UT higher education department was left embarrassed on the very first day of sale of the combined prospectus of the colleges, leading to chaos and inconvenience for prospective students and their parents.

Boat riders’ safety a casualty at Sukhna
Chandigarh, June 14
The Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) does not seem to be concerned about the safety of the people taking a boat ride in the Sukhna Lake. Most of the approximately 150 lifejackets are unfit for use as these have been found to be torn, dirty and giving out a foul smell.

Mohali residential allotment rates hiked by almost 300%
Mohali, June 14
Anyone intending to purchase residential property in the town will now have to be prepared to pay almost thrice the prevailing market price. Taking note of the property boom in Chandigarh’s periphery, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority has raised the allotment price of a residential plot from Rs 12,500 to Rs 35,000 per square yard, a threefold jump in land allotment rates.

FIR registered against house surgeon, technician
Chandigarh, June 14
The police today registered an FIR against a lab technician, an intern and a house surgeon of Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 for their negligence in the Suman case. The three have been accused of causing wrong blood transfusion to a pregnant woman, Suman, that had led to the death of the foetus and had damaged the kidney of the woman.

Man gets 3-yr RI for assaulting traffic cop
Chandigarh, June 14
The court of additional district & sessions judge Surinder Singh Sahni sentenced Manpreet Singh, 24, a Sector 71 Mohali resident and presently working as computer engineer in Noida to three years’ rigorous imprisonment for assaulting a traffic constable on duty. The court also imposed a Rs 5,000 fine on him.

2 PCR constables suspended for taking bribe
Chandigarh, June 14
Senior police officials today suspended two constables posted in the motorcycle wing of the police control room (PCR) after an inquiry found them guilty of taking bribe. Acting on the complaint of an Ambala resident, Rajesh, UT SSP HS Doon suspended constables Naresh Kumar and Karam Chand for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,000.

Unavailability of data holds up delimitation process

Unavailability of the official Census 2011 data, particularly relating to the Scheduled Caste (SC) population in the city, is holding up the delimitation of wards for the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) elections later this year.

Mayor inaugurates fountain at Sec 48
Chandigarh, June 14
Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh today inaugurated a fountain costing Rs 21.80 lakh at Sector 48 A. SE public health said fountains in the city were provided to add to the beauty of the city. Already, more than 20 fountains are in operation in the city and 12 fountains are in the pipeline to be installed in various green belts/parks of the city.

Representatives of the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) today expressed resentment on the delay in PU’s response to set up help desks for students. Each year, student organisations set up help desk to assist students seeking admission in various departments to fill up forms.

Putting relatives of those who died in the last two days to severe inconvenience, the solitary funeral van of Mandi Gobindgarh was used to carry municipal council workers to both the helipad and the marriage palace in Amloh, venue for the sangat darshan programme of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Five held guilty in Kesar Malhi murder case
Ropar, June 14
The court of District Sessions Judge GK Dhir has held five people guilty of murdering Kesar Singh Malhi, a resident of Simbal Majra village in Nurpur Bedi, on April 26, 2008. The court held accused Bachittar Singh and Lakhvir from Bhauwal, Lakhwinder Singh from Saidpur, Ajwinder Singh and Baljit Singh Beihara guilty and had held the sentence pending. Five other people were acquitted.

26 students from Patiala in merit list
Patiala, June 14
Patiala students came out with flying colour in the Punjab School Education Board’s Class X results that were declared today. Twenty-six students reserved berths in the merit list declared by the Board. Six students from Patiala made it to the top 100 in the state.

In a significant judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that an insurance company cannot turn down a medical claim on the ground that the claimant was suffering from the disease prior to his taking the policy.

Silver City developers told to refund money to complainants

Disposing of three similar complaints, the UT Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum has directed Silver City Housing and Infrastructure Limited to refund the amount deposited by the complainants along with interest for not delivering their flats to them in a stipulated time.

Bid for forcible possession of house
Panchkula, June 14
The police today arrested two persons who were forcibly trying to get possession of a house in Sector 21, here. The accused were identified as Dabwali residents Bhupinder, alias Bishu, and Rajkumar.

Ludhiana-based firm owner held for fraud
Chandigarh, June 14
The Economic Offences Wing of the Chandigarh police today arrested the owner of a Ludhiana based firm in a case of fraud involving over Rs 1 crore. Vikas Handa, owner of Villa Pearls, a firm dealing in interior designing and decoration in Ludhiana, allegedly duped a city resident, Rakesh Gupta, of over Rs 1 crore, police said. Handa was produced in court and remanded to two-days police custody.

Home Guard jawan arrested for tampering with attendance
Panchkula, June 14
A home Guard jawan of the Haryana Police was arrested for tampering with his attendance in the attendance register. According to the police, Rajinder, a resident of Morni, had tempered with his attendance in the register to withdraw Rs 1,000 more in addition to his salary.

3 DAV-10 students held for eve teasing
Chandigarh, June 14
The police arrested three students of DAV College, Sector 10, identified as Inderpreet Singh, a resident of Kairon village in Tarn Taaran district, Punjab; Varinder Singh, a resident of Karnal, and Manpreet Singh, a resident of Moga, today for eve teasing on Panjab University campus.

Rs 12,000 snatched from resident
Chandiagarh, June 14
Cash mounting to Rs 12,000 was allegedly snatched from a city resident late last night. Sushil Satti, who works in a dhaba in Sector 28 and is a resident of Kishangarh village, reported to the police that he was returning home last night when three persons on a scooter intercepted him near Saint Kabir School, Sector 26.
