Jalandhar, June 9
Known for the multistoried mansions and luxury limousines, the rural areas of the Doaba region are fast turning into a home for frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases due to poor sanitary conditions and inferior waterworks infrastructure.

Putting the poor population of the villages at the receiving end, eight diarrhoea and cholera outbreaks have occurred in the region during the past two years.

As per the figures provided by the health authorities of the all the four districts in Doaba region, six of such epidemics were reported only in Jalandhar district, besides, two in peripheral areas of Hoshiarpur district.

“Such epidemics have largely occurred in the low-lying, thickly populated poor colonies of the villages. Poor sanitary conditions and villagers’ dependence on the village waterworks even during such outbreaks is the sole reason for such epidemics,” said Dr Sandeep Sood, in charge, Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP), Jalandhar.

Although, the health authorities of Nawanshahr and Kapurthala districts maintained that no such epidemic have occurred in both the districts in the past two years, the officers concerned admitted that the good number of sporadic cases of acute diarrhoea start coming in the rural health centres every year after the onset of summers.

Sources confirmed that since August 2009, acute diarrhoea was reported in Sarhali, Chandan Nagar, Pabwaan-Banipur and Kasupur villages of Jalandhar and Akaam and Miani village of Hoshiarpur district. Worse still, the highly dangerous cholera outbreak also occurred in Shamshabaad and Bathaan village in Jalandhar. Besides a few deaths, hundreds of patients were either reported or admitted to the hospital during these outbreaks.

“Having a facility of deep submersible water pumps at their homes, the well-off families are least affected during such epidemics. However, the poor have no option but to drink the unclean water, which gets contaminated due to mixing of sewerage waste due to frequent leakages in supply lines,” said an official.

Tarsem Peter of Pendu Mazdoor Union, said, “Poor quality of material was used by the private contractors while developing the waterworks infrastructure in the villages. This substandard material, including underground pipelines, is the major reason for such outbreaks.”
