PCA ‘donates’ Rs 2 lakh to UT police society
Chandigarh, June 9
The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), which owes crores of rupees to the Chandigarh Police as security bills, has ‘donated’ Rs 2 lakh to the Chandigarh UT Police Welfare Fund and Bank Deposit Society as ‘diet money’.

Punjab secretariat staff’s battle for plots

The ongoing struggle by Punjab government employees posted at the state civil secretariat to get residential plots in Mohali on the pattern of a housing scheme floated by the Punjab Urban Development Authority for its employees is getting bitter, leaving senior PUDA officials totally perplexed.The government requires 2,500 residential plots to “adjust” all eligible employees at both the civil secretariat and those of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).

At last, FIR in Suman case likely

The Chandigarh Police may finally register an FIR in the case of transfusion of wrong blood to Suman at the GMSH, Sector 16, which led to the death of her foetus, six months back.

Forest dept to submit list of hazardous trees
Chandigarh, June 9
Trees pose a hazard for residents of a house at Sector 27 (left) and that of a house at Sector 23 in Chandigarh. The UT forest department along with the horticulture department of the Municipal Corporation (MC) will prepare a list of dead and hazardous trees in the city and submit it to the MC Commissioner within 10 days. This was decided in a meeting chaired by MC Commissioner Prerna Puri today.

Forum tells ICICI Bank to pay Rs 50,000 to customer
Chandigarh, June 9
The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the ICICI Bank to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation to a city resident for wrongly showing him a credit card payment defaulter. The bank’s act had led to the rejection of the complainant’s car loan from another bank, causing him mental agony and harassment.

Bajaj Alliance directed to pay Rs 4.52 lakh
Chandigarh, June 9
The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (II) has directed Bajaj Alliance to pay Rs 4.52 lakh as compensation to a Chandigarh-based company for discontinuing the medical cover of 162 employees without any valid reason. The forum has found the insurance company’s act as an unfair trade practice, causing immense harassment to the complainant.

MC work suffers for want of stationery

A caretaker-cum-storekeeper with the municipal corporation (MC) here has literally brought the functioning of the civic body to a standstill, thanks to his wisdom of not handing over charge while leaving for a study tour.

Two FCI retirees awarded Rs 50,000 each

In two cases, the UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (II) has awarded a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to two former employees of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for deficiency in service meted out to them by their employer and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) organisation.

UT heritage items fetch high returns abroad

Property forming a part of Chandigarh’s heritage, dating back to the 1950s, continues to fetch high returns in the auction market abroad.Reputed London-based auction house Christie’s fetched approximately Rs 27 lakh (36,625 pounds) in its latest auction, which showcased items designed by Pierre Jeanneret, a core member of famed designer Le Corbusier’s team, who helped in the realisation of the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru’s dream of a model city.

Houses to be numbered in Mohali village

In order to make matters easy for the people, the Municipal Corporation has decided to put up house numbers in Mohali village. The proposal cleared by the general house of the civic body remained pending for long, leading to a delay in the execution of the work.

Proposed B-school site shifted to Nabha Sahib

A site for proposed management institute Dashmesh Business School, to be named on former Cabinet Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh, has been shifted to Nabha Sahib Gurdwara on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway. Earlier, the school was to come up at Baoli Sahib Gurdwara, Dhakoli village.

GMADA shelves MC’s proposal of building shelter for poor

Shelving the proposal of the Mohali Municipal Corporation of constructing a ‘raen basera’ in Phase VI, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is planning to sell that very stretch of land along the main road for constructing booths.

Youth missing since May 28

Subhash Gupta (26), a resident of Saini Vihar, Baltana, had gone missing from his house since May 28.His sister Shallu, a resident of Rajpura, had reported the matter at the Baltana police chowki. She told the police that her brother was working at the Industrial Area, Chandigarh. Gupta’s mobile phone was switched off, she added. Special allowance for UT employees
Chandigarh, June 9
It’s a ‘good news’ for certain categories of UT employees and the employees on deputation from Punjab as the UT Administration has decided to pay special allowance and conveyance allowance to them with effect from June 1.

The ‘Young Francophone’ is 12 years old, but nurtures a passion for languages- and French tops the list currently. Angad Srivastava, a student of class VIII of YPS, Mohali, is the youngest person in the region to clear the DALF C1 examination (Diploma of Advanced French Language Studies). Till recently, it was the highest French language course offered by Alliance Francaise, Chandigarh. It is the official language proficiency diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education.

Wi-fi system in PU library

Students use wi-fi at the AC Joshi Library in Panjab University, Chandigarh. The wi-fi system installed in the AC Joshi Library of Panjab University became functional today.Prof RC Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, inaugurated the system.The library has an access to 5,000 online scholarly journals through the UGC’s INFLIBNET Consortium, besides having a subscription to a number of online costly databases like Science Direct, Scopus, Westlaw, Pro Quest Dissertations and Theses and Sage Journals.

It was altogether a different day for visually impaired Sukhdev Singh, who is a telephone operator at Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) office in Panchkula, as his son Virender Singh has topped in the district in the arts stream with 90 per cent marks.

Civil Hospital sans docs, basic facilities
Dera Bassi, June 9 
Due to the lack of proper medical facilities at the Civil Hospital here, residents of this town have no option but to go to Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and Ambala for diagnostic tests and treatment. The hospital, which has been denied subdivisional status as it has only 30 beds, does not have a pediatrician, dermatologist, ophthalmologist, and other specialised physicians.

Scooter, bicycle stolen
Chandigarh, June 9
Rajinder Kumar of Sector 21 reported that his Honda Activa scooter (CH03V-4767) was stolen from Sector 7 on May 31. Islam Khan of Nayagaon reported to the police that his bicycle was stolen from Sector 28 on Tuesday. Cases under Section 379 of the IPC were registered.

10 held for drinking
Chandigarh, June 9
The Chandigarh Police conducted a special drive against drinking at public places and arrested 10 persons. A case was registered at the Sector 31 police station yesterday. According to the PCR, the drive would continue.

One booked for attempt to murder

The Zirakpur police today registered an attempt to murder case against Raghubir Singh, a resident of Patran village, Patiala, on the complaint of Amandeep Singh, a resident of Patiala.

The spot where Dilbagh Singh (inset), an employee of Swaraj Combine Division, was killed in a road accident at Industrial Area, Phase 8, Mohali, on Thursday. An employee of the Swaraj Combine Division, Chapparcheri, who was driving a motorcycle, was killed on the spot and another motorcyclist Rana Daljeet Singh was seriously injured on being hit by a speeding Mahindra Scorpio SUVon the road leading to Industrial Area, Phase 8 B, here this evening.
