Civil Hospital sans docs, basic facilities
Dera Bassi residents forced to go to nearby cities for treatment
Parmod Mehta

Dera Bassi, June 9
Due to the lack of proper medical facilities at the Civil Hospital here, residents of this town have no option but to go to Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and Ambala for diagnostic tests and treatment. The hospital, which has been denied subdivisional status as it has only 30 beds, does not have a pediatrician, dermatologist, ophthalmologist, and other specialised physicians.

A visit to the hospital found most patients had decided to visit private healthcare institutions for treatment.

Renu Arora, head of the Swami Parmanand College, and Meenakshi Garg, principal of the Women’s Polytechnic, said it was surprising the lone state-run hospital in Dera Bassi had not been upgraded even though the town had been accorded the status of a subdivision eleven years ago. “The several educational institutions and industrial units that have been set up here during recent years have created the need for a big hospital with all medical facilities. At least the Civil Hospital should be upgraded soon”, they averred.

According to senior Congress party leader Rakesh Sharma, former town municipal council president Amritpal Singh, “social worker” Balihar Singh Bally and lawyer Anmol Singh, the Punjab government had pledged to upgrade the hospital on several occasions but the promise was not implemented. “All specialist doctors as well as emergency medical services such as a blood bank and surgeons should be available here. Due to lack of emergency facilities victims of vehicular accidents on the national highway are invariably referred to hospitals in Chandigarh”, they added.

Meanwhile Mohali civil surgeon Dr Charanjeet Garg said Dera Bassi had a community health centre and the process to upgrade it as a subdivisional hospital was under way. “After this was done the Civil Hospital will have all the medical facilities required”, he added.

Dera Bassi senior medical officer Dr Meena admitted the lack of doctors - particularly child, skin and medical specialists - at the Civil Hospital. “A hot line has been sanctioned for a blood storage unit and the health department will deposit Rs 22 lakh with the electricity board for this purpose”, she added.
