Losses run into lakhs as hydel power plant lies temporarily closed

Tribune News Service

Mukerian (Hoshiarpur), February 2
A privately set up hydel power plant near Terkiana village has witnessed losses worth lakhs of rupees after it was temporarily shut down on January 29 following protests by farmers, led by MLA Amarjit Singh Sahi.

The Punjab Energy Development Agencies (PEDA) closed down the plant on the verbal directions of the MLA after the villagers complained of water logging in their fields.

The plant of Atlantic Power Private Limited (APPL), a company owned by NRI Avtar Singh Gill, was generating 10,000 units of electricity per day.

Avtar Singh Gill, director and promoter of the company, said he had been suffering a daily loss of Rs 70,000.

He, however, expressed his disappointment saying petty politics by leaders has hampered state’s progress and forced the investors to leave Punjab.

Meanwhile, the farmers had complained that the company was discharging excess water into the Kali Bein which had left their field water logged.

Following the complaints, the PEDA sent a team of officials on Thursday to take stock of the situation.

PEDA director Balaur Singh also visited the area and heard the protestors. He said the power plant was discharging only 200 cusecs of water against its permitted limit of 350 cusecs.

The problem of water logging arose as the Drainage Department was carrying out some works at the bed of the Kali Bein and in the process obstructed the water flow, he pointed out.

“The water level is almost 4-5 feet below the surface level and there is no serious problem as such. But we still closed the power generation on the verbal directions of the MLA. The issue will be taken up with the high-ups on Monday,” Balaur Singh had claimed.

Balaur Singh could not be contacted for his comments.
