Partner in the ruling alliance in Punjab, the BJP held a public rally in the middle of the road in clear violation of rules here on Sunday. Interestingly, the rally was attended by Punjab Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia, MP Navjot Sidhu, MLAs Bhagat Chunni Lal and KD Bhandari and Mayor Rakesh Rathour.

The rally, organised during the Rashtirya Ekta Yatra of the BJYM on the road adjacent to two private hospitals between Patel Chowk and Kapurthala Chowk, created problems for the patients and general public.

Patients, admitted to Ranjit Hospital and Dr Goel’s Neuro Hospital, also had to bear with loud noise caused by the public address system in the rally.

Chest specialist Dr H.J. Singh said the rally created a lot of problems for patients. The road for the general public remained blocked for the entire day.

Even, he was not allowed to go to his own hospital on his car. He reached the hospital on foot after parking the car far away from the hospital, he added.

Interestingly, the newly built road was also damaged at several places as it was dug up at several places to erect shamiana for the rally.

When contacted, BJP District President advocate Subash Sood said the rally had been held on the road to involve public in the national cause. It was not in his notice that anyone had objected to holding the rally on the road. On the contrary, the public had welcomed the rally there as there was a national cause behind the rally, he claimed.

Amritsar, January 23
A prisoner lodged in Amritsar Central Jail lost his life today due to alleged negligence of a government doctor, deputed on emergency service in the jail. The Jail Superintendent has lodged a complaint in this regard to the Director, Health Services.

In retaliation, the family members of the jail inmate today blocked traffic for over three hours outside the jail’s main gate. The agitated mob got dispersed only after the intervention of SDM Parampal Singh Sidhu.

According to information, Amarjit Singh, lodged in the jail in a case under the Arms Act since December 11, was suffering from some respiratory problem and his condition deteriorated in the last two days.

During wee hours today, he complained of difficulty in breathing. Immediately, the jail staff informed Dr Suman Kumar, who did not turn up on time. Meanwhile, the patient was taken to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.

Questions are also being raised over the medical facilities available in the jail as it has been learnt that when Amarjit went to the medical centre two days ago, he was diagnosed as suffering from respiratory disorder but was not administered medicine because it was not available with the centre.

Nevertheless, Jail Superintendent G.S. Sandhu said the incident occurred due to Dr Suman Kumar’s negligence and a complaint has been forwarded to the department concerned.

“I have also approached the SDM to take action against the guilty doctor, who reached the spot only after lapse of over two and a half hours. Had he reached well on time, the patient could have been saved,” said Sandhu.

Sources even said other jail inmates too sat on a hunger strike inside the jail premises in protest against the alleged negligence of the doctor. They demanded unbiased investigation into the matter and action against the erring doctor. The inmates ended their strike only after getting assurance from the Jail Superintendent.

“Some inmates did come to me following this incident. They had demanded inquiry and appropriate action into the matter but no strike of the sort happened inside the jail premises,” he said.
