Khaki In Trouble
Gurdaspur, January 20 Sanjeev Kumar of Fajjupur village, located on the outskirts of Dhariwal, was arrested after one Raj Kumar filed a complaint alleging that the former allegedly stole mobile phones from his shop. The cops acting on the complaint summoned Sanjeev to the police station. After questioning, the police arrested Sanjeev under Sections 380 and 457 of the IPC. In the afternoon, Sanjeev committed suicide in the police station’s bathroom by hanging himself. As news spread about the death of Sanjeev Kumar, Gurdaspur SSP Varinder Pal Sngh accompanied by SP (Headquarters) Charanjit Singh immediately rushed to the Dhariwal police station. After preliminary investigation, the SSP suspended SHO Vikramjit Singh, ASI Amarjit Singh and constables Harpinder Singh and Parminder Singh for dereliction of duty. The SSP said a judicial inquiry had been initiated into the proceedings. He added that the Judicial Magistrate (first class) had already visited the police station and further investigations into the case were in progress. The SSP claimed that he was trying to ensure that such incidents did not take place. He added cases had been made out against all the four erring police officers. He said corrective measures would soon be taken in all Gurdaspur police stations to ensure that such incidents, which he termed as a ‘freak’ one, would not occur in future. Charanjit Singh, SP (Headquarters), also echoed the SSP’s viewpoint and added that staff in police stations had been asked to be more vigilant to ensure that the Dhariwal incident was not repeated. |

ASI caught taking bribe
Amritsar, January 20 Ravcharan Singh Brar, SSP, Vigilance, said Balwinder Singh, an ex-serviceman, had procured a 175 yard plot in Verka from Seema Rani of Guru Nagar, Verka, for Rs 3,00,000. A few days ago, Harjit asked Balwinder to present himself before him at the police station regarding a complaint lodged against him that he had occupied more land than he had purchased. Balwinder told the ASI hat he had bought the land from Seema Rani covered with boundary walls. However, the ASI asked him to either settle a compromise with the complainants, who had lodged the complaint against him, or gave him Rs 15,000 to write the investigation report in his favour. In the end, the deal was settled at Rs 5,000. Disappointed over the attitude of the ASI, who remained adamant on his illegitimate stand even after a lot of repeated appeals by him, Balwinder approached the Vigilance Bureau along with the telephonic recordings of their conversation.

Badal adopting illegal route to win SGPC poll: Khera
Hoshiarpur, January 19 A driver was also provided and petrol expenses were borne by the Punjab government. He stated that the expenditure of the chief election commissioner of the GEC was borne or reimbursed by the union Government. Due to the poor condition of the old car, Brar had requested the government for a new car, but he was advised to hire a taxi. The commission again requested for the permission to buy a new car which was finally granted and a new car was purchased in November 2010. During the intervening period, Brar took favour from Badal, he alleged. Khera further pointed out that 16,71,557 voters got themselves registered for the SGPC elections between June 1 and August 6, 2010, whereas 35,54,898 voters were registered in 12 days during August 7 to August 18. According to instructions of the GEC, every applicant should be present before the competent authority to get himself registered as voter, but logically it was not possible to register such a large number of voters in just 12 days, he added. Though lot of hue and cry was raised over the issue, the commission completely ignored it and did not initiate any action in this regard, Khera said and demanded a CBI probe into this episode. |

Hoshiarpur, January 20 Students Amar Gandhi (24), Anil Kumar (22), Gunnu (25) and Sumit Sharma (24) recently got employment in local Sonalika Industry, a Mahilpur-based pickle factory, and Hoshiarpur Roller Flour Mill, where they have been performing excellently. Set up by some local philanthropist in 1995, it started with 10 special children in a small building, which has now grown into a full-fledged school spread across an acre of land. Principal Shelly Sharma said as many as 95 mentally retarded children, including 37 girls up to 35 years of age, study in the school and eight trained teachers and 12 attendants to mentor and take care of the students. She appealed to other local industrialists to come forward for the rehabilitation of students who had been being trained to earn their livelihood. It is important to mention here that the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which used to provide grant of 90 per cent of the total expenditure (including salaries of staff annually), discontinued the grant 4 years ago. Now the school depends solely on the donations by philanthropists to meet the expenditure. She pointed out the Punjab Government had not provided any grant to continue this venture. She urged the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to restart the grant and clear the arrears at the earliest so that this school could continue its efforts to rehabilitating the mentally challenged children. |
