Protest rally against price rise
: To protest against the rise in the prices of essential commodities, hundreds of people under the banner of ‘Mazdoor Mukti Andolan’ on Thursday held a rallly. The rally started from the Housing Board Colony and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here. Bagga Singh, president, Ashok Mahindra and others led the rally. The protesters raised slogans against the union government and demanded immediate remedial steps to bring down the prices of food items.

Award for Sugandha Mishra
: Eminent singer Sugandha Mishra was conferred upon with prestigious Roots Rattan Award at Lion Bhawan here today. The award was given by Roots Club president Atam Parkash Bablu. Besides Sugandha, budding artistes Yuvraaj Hans, Agadi Mishra performed at the function.

hree term MLA with Manpreet:
Mehtab Singh, who represented this assembly segment in Punjab Vidhan Sabha thrice, has announced that he would join hands with Manpreet Badal to change the political situation in the state. Talking to the TNS, Mehtab Singh, who commands good following in this area, said he would join Manpreet’s Jago Punjab Yatra. Besides, he would also take his people to Manpreet's rally to be held at Khatkar Kalan on March 23. Mehtab said he had joined hands with Manpreet as policies being followed by the Congress and the SAD-BJP alliance were anti-people and anti-Punjab.

150 school teachers:
About 150 school teachers, who have been put on Census duty as enumerators and supervisors, raised slogans and submitted a memorandum to the DC demanding that they be allowed to do the Census work from 9 am instead of after the school hours. “The schools close at 3.20 pm and due to the winter season they would not get the enough time for the Census duty,” they said.

Minister’s appointment hailed
: The general secretary of the PPCC and former minister Dr Malti Thapar has congratulated Dr Ashwani Kumar for his induction in the union cabinet. She has also expressed thanks to Dr Manmohan Singh for inducting him in his cabinet. She said the new minister is a competent, efficient and honest politician.

Motorcyclist killed
: A 46-year-old man was killed after he rammed his motorcycle into a roadside tree near Taragarh on the Pathankot-Amritsar road here today. According to the police, Sat Pal, resident of Kathua, was going to his town from Taragarh. When he reached near the Crossing chowk he rammed his motorcycle into a road side tree. The body was handed over to family members after postmortem. 

2, booked for cheating: The police booked two persons under Sections 419 and 120-B of the IPC on the directions of the judge for cheating the court here today. According to police, Bhushan Kumar and Nitin Kumar produced themselves in the court in place of Mukesh Kumar who was facing the charges of traffic violation. Mukesh was driving his vehicle without number plate and driving license. He was challaned by the traffic police last week.

Medical camp: The two-day medical camp organised at GMSSS, Sector 10, by the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan under its Inclusive Education Initiative concluded on Wednesday. A medical team comprising orthopaedecian and eye specialists from GMCH-32 and a team from Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India, Kanpur, assessed children having moderate to profound degree of impairment pertaining to ortho, hearing and visual problems. The concluding day of the camp witnessed around 90 children from various government schools/AIE centres.

Hideout busted:
The security forces smashed a militant hideout and seized some arms and ammunition from a forest area in Budhal tehsil of Rajouri district on Thursday. Official sources said acting on a tip-off the security forces launched a search operation in Shahpur forests and smashed the hideout. They seized 3 kg of explosives, one pistol, one magazine, one AK rifle, eight grenades, eight pistol rounds and 960 rounds of AK ammunition.

Woman found dead: A middle-aged woman was found dead in a nullah at Mishriwala here on Thursday. The body of Sunita Rawat, a resident of Mishriwala, was found in the nullah this morning after some passersby informed the police. There were no injury marks on the body, the police said. The Kanachak police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC and shifted the body to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a post-mortem.

Girl commits suicide: A teenage girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a train near Hiranagar in Kathua district on Thursday. Tripta Devi, 17, jumped before an Ahmadabad-bound train on the Jammu-Pathankot railway line and died, the police said. The Railway Police has started investigations in this regard.
