Spurious desi ghee producing factory unearthed
Jalandhar, January 28 The authorities have seized 92 tin containers of the spurious desi ghee and logos of the a few reputed desi ghee manufacturing companies. District Health Officer Dr R.L. Bassan said after getting a tipoff, the team raided the factory unit, registered under the name of Shubh Traders. Disclosing the modus operandi used during the adulteration, he said the workers used to mix a large quantity of vanaspati oil with a small quantity of desi ghee. Later, the packed tins of the adulterated product were sold in the market under some established brand names, he added. He said samples of the desi ghee had been taken by the health authorities and sent for analysis. |

3 held with 7 kg charas

Jalandhar, January 28 The anti-gangster cell of the police worked on the clues, provided by Ramesh Kumar, alias Kala Baba, who was arrested in September for carrying 10 kgs of charas and 500gms of opium, and then laid a trap to nab the culprits. Inspector Harvinder Singh said Rashi Daba and Hari Chand, both residents of Chamba, and Sohanvir of Ludhiana, were arrested with 7 kgs of charas at a naka laid on Khusropur T-Point. Besides the contraband, the police also impounded a Mohindra Jeep (HP-73-0967) and an Indica car (PB-10AY-2332) from their possession. He said Rashi Daba and Hari Chand had come to Jalandhar to deliver a consignment to Kuddu, a resident of Ludhiana and brother-in-law of Kala Baba. Kuddu had sent his driver, Sohanvir, to receive the consignment. Since after the arrest of Kala Baba, Kuddu was running the ‘trade’ and eluding the police. Meanwhile, a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered against them. Gang of vehicle lifters busted
Nawanshahr: The SSP, Narinder Bhargav, in a press note issued here today said the police busted an inter-district gang of vehicle lifters by arresting its four members. The arrested gang members had been identified as Randhir Singh, alias Dheera, of Ganna village, Jalandhar, Manjit, alias Mani, Kuldip, alias Deepi, of Rasulpur village, Jalandhar, and Vijay Kumar of Saifabad village, Jalandhar. The police recovered three stolen tractors and two motorcycles from them. The gangsters were nabbed by a police party, led by the SHO, Rahon, Hardip Kumar, at a naka near Begowal village. A case under Sections 379, 401 and 411 of the IPC was registered against them at Rahon police station. The gang had been active in Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana and SBS Nagar districts, he added. |

Jalandhar, January 28 To test the capability of the students and the teaching atmosphere there, the DC gave addition problems to the students which they were able to solve. He wrote down his name on a blackboard in English and asked them to read it out and write his name in Punjabi. He drew the shape of a triangle and asked some related questions. He then asked them, “What do you call kharbuja in English?” to which he again got a correct answer. Impressed with the effort put in by the staff and the confidence level of the students, the DC, who was accompanied by SDM-I Iqbal Singh Sandhu, immediately announced to give an appreciation letter to the headmistress, Vijay Sharma. The DC also took a round of all classes. He also visited the senior secondary school at Chogitti. He tallied the physical attendance of the staff and children with that mentioned in the register and found it to be matching. At both the schools, the DC tasted the mid-day meal that comprised dal and matar paneer and found it satisfactory. His next stop was at the anganwadi centre at Ekta Nagar. But before visiting the centre, he bought toffees worth Rs 200 from his own pocket for distribution among the tiny tots. As he entered the premises, the kids started crying believing that doctors had come for vaccination purpose. Later, the DC also interacted with the residents of the colony there. |

Attack on health officials: Docs seek action
Hoshiarpur, January 28 In a joint press note issued here this evening, state president and press secretary of the PCMS Association Dr Hardeep Singh and Dr Ajay Bagga, respectively, stated that District Health Officer of Tarn Taran Dr Sampooran Singh along with the Food Inspector and other employees of the Health Department was taking samples of eatables at Tarn Taran when certain shopkeepers attacked the members of the anti-adulteration team. Dr Hardeep Singh and Dr Ajay Bagga demanded full protection for the employees while carrying out raids in connection with adulteration. They also expressed their solidarity with Maharashtra Government employees, who were protesting against the homicide of Malegaom Additional District Collector Yashwant Sonawane. They described Yashwant Sonawane as a martyr who sacrificed his life for the cause of anti-adulteration drive in the country. They also expressed sympathy with the bereaved family. |

Nawanshahr, January 28 The Balachaur SHO, Gurdip Singh, has been transferred to the Police Lines. Shera and his brother were allegedly assaulted by his opponent gang, led by Narinder Bhoda, on January 17. A case on the statement of Harvinder Kumar was registered against four persons at Pojewal police station. The police has already arrested two of the accused, Chaman Lal, alias Tony, and Naresh, alias Guru, in the case. The police had been conducting raids to nab the two absconding accused in the assault case, said the SSP. |
