Hoshiarpur/Amritsar, January 24 Addressing the occasion, Ambika Soni, who hails from village Bajwara of this district, and Avinash Rai Khanna, said though they too made efforts to introduce this service in the past, the credit should go to Santosh Chaudhary, who finally pursued Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee, to start the DMU. Ambika Soni and Santosh Chaudhary, both of the Congress, and Avinash Rai Khanna of the BJP, jointly said they would work for the development of Hoshiarpur district irrespective of their different political affiliations. The DMU would run daily. The up train would depart from Hoshiarpur at 5.20 am and arrive at Amritsar at 8.35 am. The down train would then depart from Amritsar at 11.30 am and reach Hoshiarpur at 2.30 pm. The train would have 15 halts of one-minute duration its journey between Hoshiarpur and Amritsar. The train from Amritsar would stop at Manawala, Jandiala, Tangra, Butari, Beas, Dhilwan, Hamira, Kartarpur, Surra Nussi, Jalandhar City, Jalandhar Cantt, Bolianna Doaba, Khurdpur, Sham Chaurasi and Nasrala before reaching Hoshiarpur. Local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu while appreciating the direct rail link between the two cities emphasized that the need of the hour was to connect the holy city with that of Chandigarh at the earliest.

mediapersons, he condemned Ambika Soni and Chaudhary for doing politics in the name of getting a DMU between Hoshiarpur and Amritsar at the cost of discontinuation of DMU service and connectivity train between Hoshiarpur and
Ferozepur. Instead of getting discontinued the said DMU service, they should have getting started train service between Hoshiarpur and
Ludhiana. “I didn’t participate at the function due to exploitation of the people,” said Tikshan
Sud.
Meanwhile, activists of Bharatiya Vikas Party, Shiv Sena (Hindustan), Bharatiya Snatan Dharm Mahavir Dal and Youth Welfare Association took out a procession in Hoshiarpur today to protest against the discontinuation of DMU service and connectivity train between Hoshiarpur and Ferozepur from January 25. Later, they submitted a memorandum to Ambika
Soni, who assured them of the continuation of the said DMU and connectivity train. — OC |

Tarn Taran, January 24 Rajanpreet, the groom, had gone to a house near the girl’s residence where he was involved in a verbal duel with the girl’s family members. As situation became tense, Rajanpreet fired gunshots leaving one Bakshish, a relative of the girl, injured. Later, the members of both the families and friends fought with swords, which left seven persons injured. Those injured were Karambir Singh, Jagjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Santokh Singh, Mangal Singh and Gurmeet Singh. Rajanpreet Singh (24) married his neighbour Sandeep Kaur (18) about six months back. The Punjab and Haryana High Court gave its consent to the marriage and the couple reached the township only two days back. Meanwhile, the police hasn’t registered a case yet. SHO Jaspal Singh said nobody recorded any statement about the incident. |

BDPO provided wrong info, claims Dhiman
Hoshiarpur, January 24 He had filed a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, in this regard. According to the information provided, it was mentioned in the report that five villages in Mahilpur block had completely been covered under the Total Sanitation Campaign scheme. During a visit to a model village Kharodi, he found that one house was without toilet facility and five others had incomplete toilets, which neither were connected with the sewerage line nor joined with other gutters. He alleged that the gram panchayat had not given Rs 10,000 to each beneficiary of this scheme as mentioned in the report under the RTI Act. The panchayat followed no guideline of the Government of India as per which the panchayat had to display a notice board with all information about the said project, grant of beneficiary and drawing of toilet. Even the health and sanitation committee was silent on such incomplete project and was not providing guidance to the beneficiaries. Besides, the BDPO had said the grant provided to the beneficiaries in this connection had to be utilised within three months, whereas other six BDPOs of the district had said it should be utilised within six months. He said by providing wrong information the said officer had not only exploited him but had also befooled the Union and state governments. He demanded action against the BDPO. He had also written to the departments concerned in this regard. |

Shopkeepers attack raiding team of Health Dept, officer hurt
Tarn Taran, January 24 The shopkeepers alleged that the team members demanded bribe from them. The owners downed the shutters of their shops and organised a march in the bazaars. According to the information, the team took samples of the eatable items, which was objected by the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers called Bhupinder Singh Khera, president of the Municipal Council, on the spot following which there were heated exchanges between Dr Sampooran Singh and Khera. Then, the shopkeepers and the Khera supporters attacked the health team. Dr Sampooran Singh, District Food Inspector Paramjit Singh and a class four employee were manhandled by the mob. The shopkeepers under the Retail Karyana Merchant Association, led by its district president Santokh Singh, downed the shutters of their shops and marched in the bazaars of the town. The association also presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and levelled bribe allegations against the team. Virsa Singh Pannu, district president of the Health Employees Union, and other organisations of the Health Department too condemned the attack on the officials and threatened to launch protests if no criminal case was registered against the attackers. The district administration called a meeting of both the sides to find out some amicable settlement. But till the filing of this news item, no compromise was reached. |

Death of jail inmate: Doc refutes allegations
Amritsar, January 24 “All allegations against me are false and frivolous,” said Dr Suman. “I got an emergency call at about 2.16 am and it took me another 15 minutes to reach the patient. His condition was deteriorating. Leaving nothing to chance, I gave him the emergency treatment and referred him to GNDH, where he died,” he said. “Moreover, it was frivolous to hold me guilty as Amarjit had been complaining of breathing trouble for the last two days and I was not even attending him. I was just called up because I was on emergency duty at that time,” Dr Suman added. |
War widows felicitated
Jalandhar, January 24 On this occasion, organisation chairperson Shashi Sibal felicitated 68 war widows from Jalandhar and surrounding districts. Shashi Sibal along with the army officer’s wives interacted with the widows and assured them of every possible help. Registry clerk caught taking bribe
Amritsar, January 24 Balwinder had demanded the bribe from Piara Singh to provide him the documents regarding property mortgage. Earlier, Piara Singh deposited the requisite government fees to him. But instead of giving the receipt of the payment, he demanded Rs 3,500 as bribe for releasing the documents. Piara Singh gave him Rs 600. However, Balwinder remained adamant and asked for remaining Rs 2,900. Following this, Piara Singh approached the Vigilance. A case under relevant sections
of Prevention of Corruption Act has been regiatered against the registry clerk. The police team accompanied with two government witnesses caught the clerk red-handed and recovered the money. |
Woman found murdered
Tarn Taran, January 24 Ajit Singh (45), the husband of Jaswinder, in his statement to the police, said he had gone to his in-laws house where he was told about his wife’s murder. Jaswinder was his second wife after he got divorce from his first wife. SP (Detective) Malwinder Singh Sidhu said the police had got some evidence from the spot. |

Nawanshahr, January 24 The residents of the affected localities said they encountered many problems, especially while driving. “Besides, the recent showers further added to our woes,” they said. The residents urged the district administration to issue necessary directions to the authorities concerned to ensure proper earth filling of the trenches after laying the sewerage pipes to mitigate their sufferings. |
