51 water samples fail
Ludhiana, January 28
Learning little from past experience, authorities have failed to take any measure to ensure drinking water in the slum areas as is evident from the 51 failed samples of water which were collected by the Department Of Health And Family Welfare in December 2010. The department had collected 106 samples of water from various localities in the city and its peripheries.

Infighting rears ugly head at Youth Akali rally

Factionalism marred the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) rally held at Dana Mandi here today with Shiromani Akali Dal leaders failing to put up a united front and coming out in the open against each other. The rally, addressed by YAD chief Bikram Singh Majithia, was virtually hijacked by Hira Singh Gabria, the 70-year-old state jails minister and president of SAD’s “backward classes” cell.

While many students protested against managements and state government for not accepting their demands, the staff members of Kamla Lohtia SD College observed a dharna against the management for not paying heed to their pending demands. LIT sells 16 properties, richer by Rs 7.89 cr

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) yesterday auctioned 12 commercial properties and four residential plots for ` 7.89 crore, with a premium of 47 per cent over the reserve price.

Drugs seized
Ludhiana, January 28
A team of health officials seized habit-forming drugs worth Rs 16 lakh from an unlicensed shop in Pindi Street. The shop owned by Jagdeep Kumar is located in Narang Tower. The team seized 7,28,800 tablets, 2,50,000 capsules and 8,800 syrups from the premises.

BJP yatra a ‘gimmick’

Bahujan Samaj Morcha president Satnam Singh Kainth has termed the “Rashtriya Ekta Yatra” organised by the BJP and the BJYM a political gimmick. Talking to mediapersons here today, the former leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly alleged that the BJP had failed to adopt a constructive role of the Opposition in Parliament. Instead, it tried to politicalise the Republic Day celebrations at the cost of peace and integrity.
