Rain catches Delhiites unawares
New Delhi, November 13 The showers continued for a couple of hours in different pockets of the city and surrounding areas, forcing the residents to finally pull out warm clothes. The rest of the day remained cloudy with cold winds. The rain brought down the temperatures. The maximum temperature today deviated four degrees below the normal and settled at 25.5 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature on the other hand settled at 17.6 degree Celsius, six degrees above the normal temperature for this time of the year. A meteorological department official said the Capital today received a good 18.0 mm rainfall. Talking about the unexpected rains, the official said, "A low- pressure area had developed over the city that caused the rainfall. The low pressure build up started from south Rajasthan, Gujart and Uttar Pradesh and moved towards the Capital today morning." "The temperature is likely to go down over the next couple of days. More rains may also surprise the residents tomorrow," he added. Tomorrow, the city is likely to see a generally cloudy sky. While the maximum temperature is expected to settle at around 27 degree Celsius, the minimum is expected to settle at 17 degree Celsius. The pre-winter shower, meanwhile, gave the unprepared Delhiites a tough time. Many people on their way to work got drenched and were seen taking shelter at bus stops and Metro stations. |
Quota sought for women in DSGMC
New Delhi, November 13 may file their complaints for violation of rights. The commission should be consisted of retired judges and officers. Addressing a conference, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi-UK) Jasjit Singh demanded that there should be an amendment to the Delhi Gurdwara Committee Act for giving 25 per cent reservation to women in the committee. He also sought enhancement in salary of sewadars and other gurdwara employees. So far the Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee has done nothing to get the culprits of 1984 anti-Sikh riots punished. It has not done anything either for the welfare of riot victims who live in Tilak Vihar rehabilitation colony and elsewhere, said Jasjit. Akal Takhat is supreme religious seat of justice for Sikhs. Community members submit their application to it for justice. However, there should be time-bound justice in the Akal Takhat, he demanded. A few years back, committee schools were considered the best in Delhi. People were crazy to get their wards admitted to Harkishan Public School, India Gate, and Hemkunth Colony near Greater Kailash. But now the situation is different as the committee organisers have lost their interest in education. Instead of focusing on education, gold was coated on the dome of Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Jasjit pointed out. He said a few months back, lakhs of rupees were spent on gold-coating at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib while Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Paramjeet Singh Sarna took credit for this. But he did not utter a single word when the standard of committee schools declined. Jasjit appealed to the community members to defeat the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) in the ensuing committee elections. According to the committee norms, the project worth more than Rs 5 crore should be put before the general house. But the norms are being flouted by the ruling party and this will not be tolerated by the community members, he alleged. The community had donated Rs 200 crore for construction of Bala Sahib Hospital in the vicinity of Bala Sahib Gurdwara at Ring Road, but the hospital is still not functional. It was opened for the poor living in Nizamuddin, Kilokari Village and Sarai Kale Khan. |
Tighter security for trade fair
New Delhi, November 13 The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), which organises the fair every year, will get X-ray baggage scanners installed at all entry points. Besides, it will also install explosive detectors, CCTVs, observation towers, walkie talkie sets, inverted mirrors and flap barriers to regulate the entry. Fire fighting system and emergency lights will also be pressed into inside the halls, said Neeraj Kumar Gupta, executive director. Parking arrangement will be made at Bhairon Marg behind Purana Quila, Foreigners Sports Club and Dayal Singh College. Park and ride facility for senior citizens, physically challenged and women with small children will be made available at Sunehri Pula near CGO Complex, Rajghat Ashpond and Dayal Singh College. ITPO chairman and managing director Subhash Pani said that some foreign countries have not yet come out of the economic crisis that had hit them a few years ago. Therefore, only 24 countries are participating in the event this year. Last year, more than 30 countries had exhibited their products in the fair. This year's overseas participation is from Afghanistan, Brazil, Bhutan, China, Cuba, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mynmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE and Vietnam. Talking to the media, Pani said that the ITPO spent Rs 12 crore preparing for the fair. The halls renovated by the organising committee during the Commonwealth Games will also be used for exhibition. He said that some halls are fully air-conditioned. When asked why a partner country has not been made this year, Pani said that last year, China was the partner country, but it left the fair just after four days. This had disturbed the ITPO. So, this year, the issue of partner country was deleted. Now, the ITPO is talking of business this year. This is a new subject. It will take some time to work out the issue. How the partner country is chosen will be decided later. He said that the 30th edition of the IITF will be inaugurated by Union minister of commerce and industry Anand Sharma on November 14. This year, Maharashtra is the partner state and Rajasthan and Chhatisgarh get the status of focus state. He said that the first five days will be business hours from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm and the remaining days will be for the general public. The fair's theme will be 'Clean and Energy Efficient Technology, Products and Services'. The theme will cover new-age technologies, products and management systems for the efficient use of energy and its conservation. |
Woman burnt for dowry
Noida, November 13 The victim Sudesh Devi was married to Sarjit Singh, resident of Dankore, on June 18 this year. Her father Net Ram had reportedly given enough dowry, though there was no demand from the family of bridegroom. "A few months ago, her in-laws put forward a demand for a Maruti car and Rs 50,000 in cash. As it was a huge amount, I had to arrange for it. I sought some time, but her in-laws became restless. On November 5, her husband assaulted her and then along with in-laws poured kerosene and set her ablaze. She was rushed to Delhi hospital where she died on Friday evening," said Net Ram. "A dowry death case has been registered and manhunt launched to arrest the accused,” said Atul Saxena, superintendent of police. Till late Saturday evening, the accused were absconding, Saxena added. |
Scolded over studies, girl hangs self
New Delhi, November 13 The police said the incident was reported from the A- block of the area. "The deceased has been identified as Neha (22), a third year student of SOL (School of Open Learning). She was rushed to the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, but was declared dead," said a police officer. The police said no suicide note was recovered from her possession. According to it, Neha had an argument with her mother over studies. "Her mother scolded her and ordered her to study. Enraged over the scolding, Neha hanged herself," said the police. The body has been handed over to the family today after conducting postmortem examination at the GTB Hospital. Neha is survived by her father Rajendra Kumar, mother Urmila and three sisters. |
Denied dues, MCD contractors threaten strike
New Delhi, November 13 The municipal contractors, who are carrying out several developmental projects across the city, have threatened to go on an indefinite strike, demanding dues pending for months. During their earlier strike in July before the Commonwealth Games (CWG), out of the total pending amount of 600 crore, the corporation had given them Rs 200 crore and had promised to release rest of the amount in a phased manner every month, said Sunil Vohra, president, contractors' association. The contractors say that this time, their balance with the civic agency has crossed Rs 600 core. Vohra said their strike in July was withdrawn on the assurance of regular payment, but the corporation did not keep its promise. "The MCD had given only Rs 200 crore to save its face as all CWG projects were far from completion. For the rest of the amount, it had assured that payment would be made in parts every month. Four months have passed and not even a single payment has been made and the due amount has reached Rs 650 crore," said Vohra. He said that around Rs 400 crore is pending under the plan head and over Rs 650 crore is due under the non-plan head. Through the notice, which was sent two days ago, the contractors have demanded the disbursement of their money. "In our notice to the corporation, we have said that if payments were not released soon, we would observe strike," Vohra said. He said that the strike would continue till the entire payment is made. |
Listeners go into raptures
New Delhi, November 13 The night that began with performances from two star awardees of ZEE TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Contest and a kathak recital choreographed by acclaimed dancer Geetanjali Lal only reached its crescendo when Abida took the stage with her troupe and her voice greeted the audiences. Soon the atmosphere warmed up enthusiastically as Abida opened her show with one of her soulful numbers, "Maula" and fans joined in chorus with rhythmic claps. An elated Abida sang with full passion and panache as she next performed her much famous number "Tere Ishq Nachaya thaiyyan thaiyyan". Her rich voice filled the venue and the listeners sighed along humming the lyrics, as the emotion, spirituality and enthusiasm came through in her voice. In her songs, Abida sang in Persian, Punjabi, Urdu, Sindhi and Seraiki, but even if one did not understand the lyrics, the wonderful thing about the concert was that her resonant voice crossed barriers of language, time and space. "Her version of number 'duma dum mast qualandar' is the perfect peak that one can reach listening to Sufia Kalam. My personal favourite other than that number was 'ranjha ranjha'. I simply loved the song," said a city-based businesswoman Naveen Joshin at the concert. "There is no space for parking. The venue is filled way beyond its capacity and still no one seems to mind the extra trouble. It is the beauty of her music that has drawn such huge crowds today," said Nipun Chowdhary, another fan at the show who had come for the concert from Lucknow. |
Will Dikshit have the last laugh?
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit believes in sticking to her guns irrespective of the criticism. She went for implementing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor project despite all the opposition. The BRT corridor, which was meant to ease the traffic blues for bus commuters, has come to stay and critics, too, seem to have accepted its utility. She was among the leading persons associated with the Commonwealth Games who were ridiculed constantly for the time overruns. However, she always maintained that things would be ready on time and was probably the only one who came out of the CWG taint almost unscathed. And last but not least, she had made no secret of her dislike for Blueline buses and has now got the High Court approval for phasing them out. The latest battle being fought by her is over circle rates. Her adversary Lt-Governor Tejendra Khanna believes that his powers override those of the CM in land matters, but Dikshit thinks she is in the right. The row between them is raging and everyone is eager to see if she would overcome the odds one more time. So far so good
for Gupta
The new Commissioner of Delhi Police B.K. Gupta is making all the right noises. He has promised to crack the whip on non-performers and said he likes corporate-style governance where merit is supreme. "Performers will shine, non-performers will perish," he said. His tough words have made the right impact so far. Field officials, right from the SHOs to DCPs and their bosses, are taking no chances. Patrolling has been intensified and cops have started appearing people-friendly these days. Veteran cops say it is natural for the subordinates to pull up their socks whenever there is a change at the top and the real challenge for Gupta would be to ensure that they maintain the tempo. Students being used as pawns
With the date for High Court's hearing on controversial semester system scheduled for November 15, Delhi University's teachers are trying their best to get students on their side. Mass SMSes like "We don't want semester. Please help!" are being sent to students. However, the DU administration is planning to use them in the court against teachers. DU officials are collecting 'samples' to show that teachers are trying to influence students. In the past, the court has snubbed teachers a couple of times, but they say they are simply using their right to freedom of expression. The real victims of this fight between teachers and DU administration are students as teaching is lagging far behind the syllabus schedule. CP to be back to bad old days
The visitors and office-goers to Connaught Place (CP) these days are cherishing the renovated look of one of the biggest commercial centres in the city. The area was given a complete makeover in view of the Commonwealth Games as the authorities pulled out all the stops to beautify the Capital. There is a catch, however. The makeover is superficial as the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), which raced against time for the Games, had done a patchwork to save its face. The work of laying the wires and ducts under the ground is still to be done and the agency plans to dig up the area all over again soon. If anything, there is more hardship in store for the visitors as the work will continue for a longer period. CWG civic work falling apart
Civic work done during the Commonwealth Games is already falling apart at many places. Streetscaping and new dividers on the roads are in disrepair in many places. Many footpaths, reconstructed during the monsoon, are broken. The green net erected at the roads is torn or rooted out at many places. A case in point is the condition of the dividers on Taj Mansingh Road, a prime location in the Capital. Many of them have fallen in the last few weeks and the authorities don't seem to notice it. Robber held in shootout
New Delhi, November 13 According to Neeraj Thakur, additional commissioner (crime) Neeraj is wanted in several cases of murder, dacoity and robbery. The accused were apprehended two days ago after a tip-off about their movement. On November 11, around 2 pm, a police team spotted a white Ford Figo car coming from Vasant Kunj and going towards R.K. Puram and waived it to stop. However, instead of stopping, the occupants tried to speed away. "The car was trailed and waylaid by the police. After the car stopped, both the occupants came out and tried to flee towards jungle. To deter the police party from chasing him, Neeraj fired two shot at the police party from his English pistol. But the police managed to nab them without any bloodshed," said Thakur. The accused were interrogated by a high-level investigation team. During interrogation, Neeraj confessed that he owed allegiance to the notorious group of robbers, Sonu Kharab gang, and had been involved in several dacoities, murders, robberies and other crimes. Four members of this notorious gang had confronted the police in June 2009 also. Neeraj was involved in the murder of one Arun at Najafgarh in June 2009. During the same time, he along with his accomplices had robbed Rs 25 lakh from a businessman Vinay Goel after firing at his Innova car. Neeraj is also involved in robbing a Safari car in the Chhawla area of Delhi, besides attempting to murder one Deepak Tyagi last year. Further investigation in the matter is on and Neeraj is being interrogated in police custody. |
Rs 6-lakh robbery at jeweller’s house
New Delhi, November 13 According to the police, the incident took place around 11 pm and robbers remained in the house for about 40 minutes. The incident took place in the house of one Hira Chand, who owns a jewellery shop in the area. Last night, when he was in the house, the door bell rang. "As Chand opened the door, four men holding guns barged in and held the family hostage at gunpoint. They then ransacked the house. The owner has claimed that he has lost cash and jewellery worth Rs 6 lakh," said a police official. |
2 held for auto driver’s murder
New Delhi, November 13 According to H.G.S. Dhaliwal, DCP (south), Ashok is involved in eight cases of disturbing public order and fighting with public servants," said Dhaliwal.
