Traffic crawls as thousands come out for Chhath
New Delhi, November 12 The traffic crawled for hours, especially at ITO, as the devout thronged roads leading to the Yamuna. The atmosphere at the ghats was of celebration, festivity and piety as firecrackers went off all through the evening while the worshippers took the dip in the river to worship the sun. Many private bodies and some affiliated with political parties have put up tents at the banks as many people stayed put overnight so that they don't have to travel the distance all over again in the morning to worship the rising sun, with which the Chhath ends. A festival celebrated mostly by people from Bihar and eastern UP, Chhath has gained prominence in Delhi over the years as the number of migrants has increased. This rush is despite the fact that a majority of them have gone to their native places for the festival. "I decided to celebrate the festival in Delhi this time. I used to go to Bihar every year, but Delhi has been my home for seven years, so I decided to do it here," Kundan Paswan, a worshipper, said. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers on roads and ghats to control the crowd and traffic. |
Circle Rate: CM clams up on cabinet meeting
New Delhi, November 12 Sources said the circle rate was definitely an issue in the cabinet meeting, but Dikshit would be discussing it with the central government before finalizing her stand. The equation between the two statutory bigwigs of the Capital has deteriorated of late, especially during the Commonwealth Games as Khanna believes that Dikshit unfairly tried to take the credit for the works. When the Lt-Governor had returned the proposal last time, the Chief Minister called an emergency meeting and again got the proposal dispatched to him without making any change in it. The LG had reportedly suggested amending the rates meant for lower categories of land - E, F and G. But the cabinet made no amendment in the proposal. However, this issue has become a subject of discussion in political as well as bureaucratic circles of the Delhi government. Sources said that since the land in Delhi is owned by the Union government and the LG is its representative, he can use his powers. The Delhi government cannot send the proposal directly to the Union government. Sources said the government is in dire need of finance after the Commonwealth Games. If the new circle rate is implemented, the government may earn revenue of Rs 700 to Rs 800 crore. |
