Sanitation woes for Shahpur Chowk area
Our Correspondent

Pathankot, October 27
It is getting difficult for the residents of the Shahpur Chowk locality to live alongside choked drain and heaps of garbage.

The residents have almost given up hope of staying in hygienic conditions. The area falls under the purview of the Municipal Council and the Improvement Trust.

According to residents, the authorities don’t give a damn on cleanliness along roadsides. Even though they have raised a hue and cry over dumping of garbage in the open, nothing has been done to check the menace. It is claimed that the drain opposite the Civil Hospital overflows creating trouble for shopkeepers.

The residents complain that the drain gets cleaned rarely and when done silt is simply dumped on the edge which again flows into the drain.

Heaps of garbage, open drains and choked sewer lines pose danger to the health of residents.

Anil Puri, running a chemist shop, says the authorities seem to be deliberately ignoring the woeful condition of the area.

“Lack of garbage bins leaves more and more open plots getting converted into garbage-dumping places,” he laments. He says he has approached area municipal councillor Gaurav Wadhera on the issue of cleanliness of drain a number of times but to no use.

MC President Anil Vij says he has issued instructions regarding cleaning up of the drain. “And to meet the garbage dumping problem a proposal has been sent to the government for setting up a garbage treatment plant as early as possible,” he added.

Improvement Trust Chairman Anil Vasudeva has also made a plea to the public for keeping their localities clean.
