Strike fails to hit life in Delhi
New Delhi, September 7 But autorickshaws and taxi services were hit near
railway stations and airport. Many branches of nationalised banks, except the State Bank of India, were closed as their employees adhered to strike called in protest against the rising prices and banking reforms. AITUC, a union affiliated with the CPI, said industrial workers went on strike in industrial areas like-- Okhla, Bawana and Narela and said that employees of banks and insurance firms took out a rally near Connaught Place. The rally was addressed by senior CPI leader Gurdas Das Gupta. The most affected lot was those who arrived to the city today. Many were seen waiting at railway stations with luggage as they could not find autorickshaws. "I had to go to east Delhi as I could not get an autorickshaw for an hour. I boarded the Metro and then took an autorickshaw for home," Amit Shah, a train passenger, said. However, many autorickshaws were plying across the city. Radio taxi services were also available.

Poor response
in Faridabad
Faridabad, September 7 All markets, services of Haryana Roadways' buses, private health, education and tourism centres, banks and factories functioned as usual. Traffic too remained undisrupted. The bandh was supported by the Haryana Sarva Karamchari Sangh and the Haryana Abhibhawak Ekta Manch. However, workers of a few institutions that supported the bandh held demonstrations outside their workplaces during lunch break. Employees of the Bank of Patiala, Union Bank and workers of some factories near Bata Chowk held demonstrations outside their office gates during the lunch hour. A large number of workers gathered at B.K. Chowk and demonstrated against the government. Later, they took out a procession that terminated at Mini Secretariat. Leaders of the Haryana Sarva Karaamchaari Sangh led the procession. A delegation of protesters submitted a memorandum at the deputy commissioner's office. In the memorandum, the workers have talked about the rising prices of basic commodities and the government's labour policy. They have also criticised the government's privatisation and globalisation policies. They have alleged that while leaders of political parties joined together for the passage of Bill to increase salaries of MPs, people in power worked together against workers and employees. They dubbed the demand of the MPs for salary hike as undemocratic and unjust. The memorandum alleged that the life of workers and common man had become pitiable due to the rising inflation and the government's wrong policies. |

Commonwealth Games
New Delhi, September 7 The tickets for all the matches between the two countries have been sold out even as there is still almost a month to go before the Games. The organsing committee (OC) officials said that there is great excitement for India-Pakistan matches. "We are happy to know that all India-Pakistan matches will be housefull as the tickets have already been sold out," said Lt Gen (rtd) S.P.S. Dhillon, joint director general. "An estimated 1.7 million spectators with different categories of tickets are expected to visit various stadia over 12 days. Catering to their needs is not an easy job, but the OC is geared up for the challenge," said Major General G.G. Dwivedi, head of spectator services. Apart from the Indo-Pak matches, tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies are also doing good business. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, has a sitting capacity of over 6,00,000. It will accommodate around 45,000 spectators and rest of the seats will be reserved for the athletes, CWF delegates and officials. The OC officials said that on the day of the opening ceremony on October 3, the gates of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be opened four hours in advance for the spectators. But during the sport events, they will be opened only 90 minutes prior to the game. "The opening ceremony will start at 7 pm and the gates will be opened at 2.30 pm. There are 21 gates, of which three have been reserved for the spectators," said Dwivedi. There would be around 2,650 volunteers for the assistance of the spectators coming to the stadiums. As part of the security measures, a list of prohibited items has been prepared. These items will be mentioned behind the ticket as well as on the spectators' guide. In case spectators still bring the prohibited item, they would be sensitised to get rid of it at the 'Drop off Points' or the main entry gate. |

Reserved lanes come into effect on Sept 20
New Delhi, September 7 A notification for invoking the fine or impounding the errant vehicle has been issued by the Lieutenant Governor's office. "The Delhi traffic police has made elaborate arrangements for smooth movement of the Commonwealth Games-related traffic. The exclusive lanes for Games-related traffic will come into effect from September 20," said a senior police official. People are advised to as far as possible avoid CWG lanes in general and particularly on Safdurjung Road, Kamal AStaturk Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Sardar Patel Marg, Siri Fort Road, Harsukh Marg, Purana Quila Road and Mother Teresa Crescent Road, as these roads have only two lanes in one carriageway and their one lane is reserved for the Games traffic. To give road users sufficient idea of the restrictions during and before the Games, trials have been planned for three days, starting tomorrow. |
Hit by kin of patient, SJ resident docs strike work
New Delhi, September 7 This led to a near-collapse of the essential services in the casualty and OPDs of several departments, faculty members conceded, even as the hospital administration officially claimed that the functioning remained unaffected as senior doctors were pulled from other departments to make up for the loss. The medical superintendent, Dr NK Mohanty, termed the strike as "unjustified" and said footage of CCTVs did not show any manhandling as alleged by striking doctors, who have demanded better security. With the city battling with crisis due to dengue and H1N1, the administration is contemplating invoking Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), which would make the strike illegal and give it powers to deal severely with the strikers. Dr Mohanty said they have strengthened the security measures at several departments, including gynaecology, orthopedic and pediatrics. The union ministry, which is responsible for the hospital's management, made late interventions to solve the impasse and hectic parleys had been going on between striking doctors and the hospital adminitration in the late evening. "The matter lies with the minister," said Dr Mohanty. Minister of state for health, Dinesh Dwivedi, also met striking doctors in a late meeting. The junior residents and senior resident medicos managed to mobilise support and tried to collect signatures from the MBBS students during the general body meeting held in the evening and thus 1,200 students and doctors, as claimed by the RDA doctors, joined in the protest. The incident in the wake of which the strike was called took place in ward number eight of the gynaecology department in which the patient's family was said to have assaulted two junior and one senior resident doctors after the patient - a dengue patient succumbed after an episode of shock syndrome. "The security guards kept watching silently and even though the duty doctors made nearly 50 calls to the security cell, there was no response," said a senior resident of the gynaecology department. The joint secretary of the RDA, Dr Pratap, said security has become a serious issue here and every other day patients' attendants assault doctors who work for long hours. With three occasions in this year when the undergraduates and doctors have rushed to protesting raising concerns on inadequate arrangements of security and other basic amenities, strikes seem to be a common feature in the hospital. |
Classes shut as DUTA begins 3-day strike
New Delhi, September 7 Pental's term expired on August 31. He is, however, expected to stay on till his successor assumes office. After the three-day strike that ends on September 10, DUTA plans to hold a massive demonstration at Jantar Mantar on September 13 to convey its grievances to the ministry of human resource development (MHRD). This will be followed by open house interactions with students on September 14 and 15, wherein DUTA's opposition to the semester scheme will be explained. According to the teachers, Pental's decision to overstay is unprecedented. "The last vice-chancellor who stayed beyond his tenure was V.R. Mehta, but he had the Visitor's approval. As per the rule, the vice-chancellor leaves the day his term expires, and the pro vice-chancellor takes over," said a senior DU faculty. Pental, however, confirmed that he had taken legal opinion before deciding to stay on. "Is it the Visitor's problem or their problem? We have written to the MHRD and have sought legal counsel. If the teachers have a problem, they should go to court and not take law in their hands," he said. Rumours of an extension being given to Pental are widespread. However, DU sources say there has been no official word from the MHRD. Meanwhile, the search committee for the new vice-chancellor held its second meeting on Sunday. The Visitor's nominee, former Chief Justice of India V.N. Khare chairs the committee. |
Metro trial run extended to Nehru Place
New Delhi, September 7 The stations at Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, Kailash Colony and Nehru Place are elevated while the ones in Central Secretariat, Khan Market, JLN Stadium and Jangpura are underground. During the trial runs, the interaction of the trains with physical infringements (civil structure) will be checked to ensure that there is no blockage during the movement of the trains. The signaling system will also undergo rigorous testing. Subsequently, the response of the train at different speeds, braking of the train and the interconnection with the operations control centre (OCC) will also be monitored during the trials. In the process, the trains will also pass over the Moolchand cable-stayed bridge, one of the milestones in Metro network. The bridge, which has been designed with help from a French company-Systra-- has been constructed at a height of 12 meters above the Ring Road passing beneath it and has been built on only two pillars (piers). The trial runs will continue for a few days after which the trials will gradually be extended up to Sarita Vihar in a phased manner to complete the 20.16-km-long Central Secretariat (CTST) - Badarpur corridor. This is the second standard gauge corridor of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) after its Inderlok-Mundka corridor. This entire line consists of 16 stations, with Central Secretariat, Khan Market, Jawarharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium, Jangpura stations being underground and Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, Kailash Colony, Nehru Place, Kalkaji Mandir, Govindpuri, Okhla, Jasola, Sarita Vihar, Mohan Estate, Tughlakabad and Badarpur being elevated ones. He said DBCs would continue with their strike and pointed out that several court rulings had come in favour of regularising their jobs. Meanwhile, the MCD has warned domestic breeding checkers against going on strike and said that those not returning to work might face termination of services, but no such action has been announced so far. The civic body is launching a week-long sanitation drive across the city to control mosquito breeding, though residents in most areas claim that they did not see any change. The deputy commissioner of west zone in collaboration with staff of health, sanitation and horticulture departments had launched a special drive to control dengue. Coordinated efforts were made in the area to control the mosquito breeding. Fogging was carried out by the hand-operated machines and anti-larva activity was carried out in open drains. Students move HC on varsity change of criteria for promotion
New Delhi, September 7 The university did not promote about 3,500 students from various courses like B Tech, MBA, MCA and others on the ground that the criteria for promotion under Indraprastha Vishwa Vidyalay Act for the next academic year was amended by the Board of Management in August last year and the new criteria would be applicable only on the batches of 2009-10 and next year onwards. Alleging the decision of the management was not communicated neither to their colleges nor to them, about 107 students from various colleges under the university in the National Capital Territory Region (NCR) have filed a petition before Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw. Appearing for the students, counsel Geeta Luthra, assisted by Sanjeev Sahay, submitted the students were suddenly denied promotion to academic year 2010-2011 in July this year. Contending that the university's changing of criteria was arbitrary and illegal, the lawyer said the students were informed by their respective colleges. According to the petitioners, earlier, the students had the liberty to carry back all papers in which they have failed to next year and the only criteria was at the time of completion of final year was that they have to have minimum number of credits.
